I asked if there were any peanut allergens in Chocodiem's dark chocolate mousse because I wanted to share it with my younger sister, we both have severe peanut allergies. The person who was working assured me there were no peanuts ingredients, however as soon as my sister and I took a bite our throats immediately swelled up. We were both struggling to breathe and had to endure a 45 minute car ride back home with our symptoms. I continued to throw up in the car and later on when we arrived home, and my sisters throat swelled up more as she was also experiencing heavy stomach pains. Although the person working there most likely made an honest mistake, this store should be more cautious and aware of their ingredients because of how severe peanuts allergies can be. If me and my sister had more of the dark chocolate mousse, we could have ended up in the ER. read more

I like that the tax is calculated into the price (I'm the weirdo that likes to have their balance look nice with an even $20.00) The flavors I tried were: Rose lychee: hint of lychee but also hint of toothpaste taste kind of odd... Cookies and creme: fantastic this one really impressed me My friend really enjoyed the pistachio. I think they taste good but not as good as ladurée. The staff was nice and helpful in choosing. This place is located in the back of the market by the right before the wine vendor and next to the pizza spot. I liked their macarons (I had the Nutella and coco nut macaron). Their truffles were hit or miss but I enjoyed the milk chocolate truffle the best. The coconut truffle was good as well but the other flavors I tried (hazelnut, salted caramel, cookies and cream, and mint) were lackluster. The little packaged chocolates in the middle like chocolate covered almonds can be skipped as they were not that good. I would come back for the macarons, milk chocolate truffle, and to look at their chocolate artwork which was spectacular! read more

A small tight store sandwiched between The Clean Plate and the Riverside Coffee and Tea. They sell freshly baked brownies, macaroons, prepared bags of dark or milk chocolate covered espresso beans or raisins and bite size pieces & sold by the pound chocolates. Somehow they were able to fit everything in and still have enough room to walk around the room without feeling claustrophobic. I bought my husband a prepared bag of dark chocolate covered espresso beans. That's our souvenir from today's trip into downtown Clifton, NJ. as we visited The Red Mill. After we got home, we ate some and was rewarded with the fine quality of dark chocolate. It was not the slightest bit bitter and the bean has a wonderful crunch to it. I bought 3 and all 3 were stale, the filling wasn't delicate at all, it reminded me of like grocery store cake icing. The person ringing me up said they're the best macaroons she's ever had... I've scouted for the best macarons and truffles in Paris, stood in line at Ladurée in New York City, and B. Patisserie in San Francisco. These are probably the best I've found, and with flavors I haven't seen anyone else attempt. Exceptional stuff. And it stays good for weeks after, so if you're just in town for the day, buy a bunch. I was having lunch with a friend and stopped back to the counter afterwards for something fresh and light for dessert and a bit of chocolate to bring home. They offered 6 macaroons for $16. The young lady was spot on with her assessment of the tart and sweet attribute of each flavor and made purchasing them most pleasant as I couldn't wait to get home and try them! My only issue was that i failed​ to notice they were refrigerated and REQUIRED refrigeration. Unfortunately they proceeded to melt that afternoon and I was most displeased we not been warned and almost lost them. Bought a selection of fine chocolate for $2.50 each and was not disappointed. The chocolates are as fine as any Belgian chocolates I have had and the flavors and texture were decadent and smooth. And I give them a 5. Just because I would have preserved the macaroons better and they woul have been twice as enjoyable I must give them a 3. For a total count of 4 stars . read more

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of visiting Hershey, PA. The smell of chocolate filled the air, and I still have vivid memories of doing the factory floor tour and seeing giant vats of molten chocolate being stirred by huge mechanical arms. I have since been fortunate to sample fine chocolates from Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France and Belgium, and know now that Hershey's isn't really a particularly good chocolate, but the smell and taste of chocolate still evokes warm and happy memories--it is the ultimate comfort food. I recently visited Chocodiem, a Belgian chocolate shop in Clinton, NJ, and I am happy to report it triggered all those happy memories. They make their chocolates on site, and the array of beautifully crafted chocolates in all sorts of intriguing shapes and colors had my mouth watering. The actual taste test did not disappoint--this is not your childhood Hershey bar! Jean Paul Hepp is the proprietor of Chocodiem. He is friendly and engaging, with an enthusiasm for his craft which is infectious. Mr. Hepp is originally from Belgium and has a background in the sciences. This is a wonderful combination of traits, as he marries the finest traditions of European taste and craftsmanship with a scientist's questing mind. A perfect example of this is his "naked" truffle, an innovative confection which has to be experienced to be understood and appreciated. All of his chocolate creations are beautiful to look at and delicious. One of my favorites are the milk chocolate enrobed almond biscuits. Richly flavored, delicately crunchy yet with a melt in the mouth texture--they are truly one of the best chocolate confections I have ever had anywhere. Chocodiem is well worth seeking out. Its location is not the best (that's why I dinged it one star), but not too hard to find. It is on Main Street in Clinton, just over the bridge from the Red Mill, in a big building that houses a frame shop, Riverside Cafe, and several other businesses. Totally....worth....every....penny.... Chocodiem rests in an alcove right next to Riverside Coffee so it's a bit easy to miss. Run by Belgian Pharma guy named Jean-Paul turned choclatier, maybe that's why his chocolates are so addicting! HAHAHA-HOOO! Lame joke aside, I'll never fault anyone for chasing their dream, and that's probably the reason why his chocolates are so good. He clearly likes what he does and his cheery disposition further proves it. After stumbling on this place, we chatted for a bit. Super nice guy and good people. Moving on from the "Hey, let's support small business mantra," come here for the chocolates. First, they're absolutely stunning to look at. Beautiful. Like edible jewelery. Second, delicious. True, every place does they're own little exotic flavor now with a hint of such and such but he's got rose hips and orange cayenne, which I loved. That and his are more flavorful than other lazy chocolate shops that seem to be popping up. I can't adequately convey how good this is in a review though other than showing a rare 5 stars from me. So worth the one hour drive... And the money! We actually stumbled upon this little piece of heaven while walking around Main St. looking for a different place. JP, the owner is very knowledgeable and passionate about his chocolate and one can feel this as the chocolate melts in your mouth about the process behind making this divine indulgence. One cannot go wrong with 72 % dark and chocolate nibs, delicious assorted truffles or seasonal specialities here at Chocodiem. Yes, it does cost more than Hershey's or anything else that you can find in the grocery store, but it really does taste much better than those, too! This is great chocolate, carefully perfected and prepared. Not sure you're ready to take the leap? Don't be shy to ask for a sample. The owner is more than happy to let you try things, and also talk to you about the product and how it is made. He's amazingly friendly and patient, even with my kids, who sometimes take a painfully long time to pick out treats--for themselves as well as for friends and family. As a chocolate connoisseur, I was thrilled to hear that a Belgian chocolate store was opening up in Clinton. I have tried other gourmet chocolate makers in the area, but their products seemed very commercial. I was very pleased with chocodiem, however. Aside from their difficult-to-find location (in between the restaraunt and the bike store) I must say that there are not many ways that this place can improve. Their 68% "Naked Truffle" made in house is my favorite. Their Macaroons are also wonderful... the price is reasonable compared to other gourmet places in NYC. This is an authentic chocolate experience with the the founders and owners from Belgium as stated by another reviewer. The owners are very friendly and affable and their chocolate is exquisite! You can get one piece or a several and you can pay with a card (yay!) no matter the size of purchase. I went with my friend and we were delighted to try some hot chocolate shots, Real hot chocolate, not a mix, and it was fantastic. I will definitely be back as the months get colder. Very lovely set up- meticulously displayed and mouth wateringly delicious. The chocolates prepared here are refined, perfected and is truly the owner's gifted craft. JP hosted a wine-chocolate pairing class for a few friends. It was executed very well- a brief talk on chocolate, origins, etc. and then an extensive tasting of several different chocolates with the different wines we had brought.
