Western food has always been such a crapshoot in Hong Kong, but one of the few dependable options has been Chips, a pseudo fast food spot right next to the Grand Theater at Elements Mall. The menu is distinctly catered to a variety of burgers and various fries (err...chips!) with accompanying sauces. I have been waiting for disappointment in some aspect, but it's been anything but.
The place is the perfect option for a meal before a movie. There is plenty of space from within that works for all group sizes. I appreciate they have an impressive number of condiments considering the fact they already have so many sauces to go with their chip combos. An added bonus for our non-Chinese speaking friends: The staff (especially the manager) speaks English.
For an average of 90HKD, one can score a burger, some type of fries and a drink. I personally love the Brekkie Burger ($80), which is an all day breakfast burger that has cheese, bacon, egg, and a respectably sized patty inside a sesame bun. It won't blow most burger fans away, but considering the drought of quality burgers in HK, this is a very decent option. There are things other than burgers on the menu, such as the Atlantic fish and chips, but I would vouch for the burgers over anything else.
Another crucial element to the ideal Chips experience: Black Truffle Cheese ($25) Cover it on the burger, smother it with your fries, this is crack worthy. It's so terrible for the body and incredibly simple to pull off, but they've managed to make it a must order for anyone who doesn't suffer from lactose allergies. It is sinfully delicious.
A slight bummer for a mall operated business is that they don't accept credit card, but at least they take Octopus cards and the obvious cash. Combos are the best bet here, though if one orders everything a la carte, the bill can add up like any western spot. Chips is vastly underrated in my book, which means I'll likely be enjoying this whenever I'm up for a movie or just killing some time at Elements. read more
