    classic burger

This was my first proper burger since I've moved to HK and it was fantastic. They have a vast list of other options, beef, chicken, fish, even foie gras! Since this was my first time here and I was craving a good old fashioned burger, I went straight for the classic burger. It comes with a pretty thick patty, lettuce, tomato and their "homemade sauce". This tasted like a mixture of ketchup and mayo mixed together, and it went well with the burger. Not sure if you can ask for how you want it cooked, but by default it came out as a medium. I also got a side of twister fries (curly fries), and I was very disappointed. They were soggy, very very greasy (you can taste the oil as you bite into it), and there was barely any potato inside each piece. I think I'll try for the potato wedges next time.

Gourmet burgers in the heart of Causeway Bay. This restaurant offers an American menu with big burgers and good helpings of fries. I was a bit disappointed with the uncomfortable seats and lack of service as one needs to go to the till to order your food when a burger can cost from $75 to $110. Curly fries was good, the wings were good, and the burgers were over the top! This is not really a place I would visit frequently but once in a blue moon is ok. Shake Shack still trumps any burger joint in town.

Suppose to be a chili burger... Where's the chili con carne sauce??

As a expat who moved to Hong Kong from the states, its always been a challenge and a need to find affordable good burgers. You either get Mickey D's or expensive gourmet burgers (come on, its a burger!). When Burgeroom decided to open on Fashion Walk, I was excited, hopeful and even finally ready to settle down on a burger joint in HK. I also live right next door so it would be the perfect place to grab a quick burger. I've heard from my HK friends that their other location serves good burgers. And so i went there for lunch today. Chili Burger + fries and drink combo for HKD 106. Maybe its because I had high expectations or that its located on fashion walk but i was sorely disappointed with this burger. Coming from the US, i know what a good burger is and this is not definitely not it especially for almost $14 USD! I give them at least 2 stars for their very friendly service. The waitress even gave me a loyalty card so when i make my 10th burger purchase, I get the 11th for free (but only valid for the cheapest and plain burger). Still nice and if it was good, i would fill it up fast. The burger came out and from the first glance looks huge in the basket. Fries looked fresh too. However when you pick up the burger, you notice the fundamental mistake in Burgeroom's burger. The bun is oversized for their tiny but thick patty. The think and wide bun makes holding the burger messy and complicated and leads all the inside to slide toward the last few bites making your finders messy and you just dont want to finish the bread. How do you even mess that up? The patty and bun should be somewhat lined up so they can be grabbed together! Think the patty and spread it out so it reaches near the edge of the bunch! The beef patty was cooked medium to medium well which is not my preference for a burger and at 14 USD for the meal, i could have gone to Mickey D's and be more satisfied. Fries were at room temperature so i'm assuming they were sat out for a while because my order came 2 mins after placing it. Speaking of Chili Burger, a chili burger is made using chili con carne like a chili dog or sloppy joe! Burgeroom's version of chili burger is slapping spicy coleslaw in your burger almost like kimchi. What the heck is that? It didnt even taste spicy! For the good point of this place, the service was great. The lady in front greeted me with a smile, showed me the menu and let me order in peace. She came to check up on me during my meal and gave me the loyalty card to entice me to come again. Bottom line: great staffs but unmemorable burger. Skip!

I was rather disappointed at the burger here. I had seen so many pictures of it on Instagram so I suggested it when my friends and I were looking for a quick lunch. Everything here was just meh. The burger was meh. The beef lacked flavor and I dislike places where fries or any other side doesn't come with the burger. The serve was meh. In all fairness, this is a type of place where you go to the counter and order and someone will bring your food to you so I don't expect the service to be incredible. The pricing was meh. For the $70-$80 range, I could get a much better burger elsewhere. On the brighter side, this is conveniently located in Fashion Walk in Causeway Bay though!

This burger joint is located off in the middle/end-ish of a small street in Wan Chai. Wasn't really hungry when I came, but I just HADDDDD to try at least something there cus I trekked all the way to the HK side. Alas, I settled for the Skinny Jeans ($80), which came with a smaller cheeseburger and side salad. The salad was fresh and the dressing was dece. The burger tho... STAR of the show. The bun was delightfully soft, but structured enough to hold up to the juicy patty. The patty itself... HOLY YESSSSS. Their patties are made of dry-aged beef and cooked to medium perfection. Wish I was hungrier so I could have tried one of their more unique creations. That will have to wait until next time I guess!

The chicken breast is so crispy from being double fried, and the sauce doesn't make it soggy. Great place for a burger. Enough to make me forget In n' Out!

However, if you hadn't made a reservation and couldn't get in, there's plenty of other restaurants in what is called food street with each one offering a patio as well. Since food street is like a wide alley that runs between all these buildings that house high-end boutiques on the ground floors, you would not be subjected to the noise and exhaust of HK traffic. The layout is quite casual, with a mix of couples and families. The menu is quite extensive with fresh oysters from different countries. We sampled two different varieties from Ireland. There's also a tapas page offering things from garlic shrimps to iberico ham. We ordered the foie gras sandwiched between toasts. It was quite good if a little rich. One of our friends had a soup of the day which was butter squash. It came with a piece of tomato-rubbed toast, Spanish style. He liked it. We also ordered a Caesar salad for two which was large enough for the four of us to sample. A solid salad but lacked a bit of dressing. When we mentioned it to the waiter, he brought out more dressing on the side. For our mains, my GF and one of our friends ordered ordered the Iberico pork chops grilled and served with roasted potatoes and half a head of roasted garlic. The two chops were juicy and tender with a hint of sweetness from the balsamic glaze. The chops were part of the daily special which I also ordered off. I had a pasta with prawns and scallops. The pasta was tasty with three large prawns. My only quibble would be that I wish there were more scallops as I only got two. Our other friend ordered off the menu and had a seafood stew that featured clams, mussels, scallops, and half a lobster. It was huge. Now I know where my scallops went! All in all, a nice meal in a nice setting without breaking the bank.

The ambience was like a retro diner, with unique CD art on the walls, diner-like stools, and photos of guests enjoying their meal at Burger Joy. I wasn't feeling a burger, so I ordered some truffle fries and wings. I was so impressed at the amount of truffle they sprinkle on the fries and the flavor of the wings. SO hot and fresh which made the meal so delicious. I went with Cajun seasoning and the exterior was lightly crispy and coated with the powder. Fantastic flavor! As a Westerner, I could rely on Burger Joy for that classic American style dining. They have late hours and close at 2:30AM! It was and still is such a hard thing to find in HK, which seems strange given the popularity of burgers and the huge expat population. Now that several big time fast food chains (#1) have opened up, Burger Joys and their pricey burgers may seem somewhat pedestrian. Burger Joys is still fairly unconventional from most of the other burger spots, which includes serving full on booze (even cocktails!) and remaining open for 24 hours a day. The latter is mainly for location's sake, Wanchai and it's red light district vibe tends to spurn a lot of expat visits; many of whom are less likely to look for a HK Cafe over the idea of a burger and fries. The burgers themselves evoke memories of In N Out by presentation alone, sans taste and price. That said, the burgers are good. I'm not sure if the signature double cheeseburger warrants the $139HKD price tag, but it's still tasty. Throw in a shake and some fries (better with truffle!), the meal gets closer to 200HKD+ with the service charge. Thank goodness they accept credit cards. The service has been a mix of great and subpar. Some days when the gentleman from Vancouver is working, the service is professional, fun, and efficient. Some other days / hours, it's a crapshoot of casual and lackluster staff. The mileage definitely varies. I suppose the adage applies: come for the food and nothing else. I would come back again just for this salad alone. The other dishes we tried though were a bit disappointing (good yelp reviews = high hopes): * The foie gras on the burger was ah-mazing (in words of my friend), but the burger itself was not great. * I was really looking forward to the shrimp po boy, and while it looked delicious, it was just okay with a heavy batter and little flavor. The flavors of the pork sandwich didn't work well together and the bread came soaked-through soggy. * The lobster broth pasta was well... noodles in strong lobster broth. * For dessert, we decided on the mascarpone donuts. Sad, deflated little puffs. It's worth noting that they are baked with mascarpone, not mascarpone-filled as we had hoped. Overall, food & service was okay. I'd stop by again if in the neighborhood but not worth coming to TST specifically for.
