Gave it another try with Gan Shao Beef, but same results as before with other dishes: sickly sweet. "Gan shao" is typically a szechuan dry braise, but their version seems to be deep fried breaded beef tossed or smothered in a thick sweet sauce, no pepper heat. It's ok if you are expecting something that tastes like orange beef, but it can be an unpleasant surprise if you are expecting something else. read more

I decided to order at the restaurant it it did take a little while. Here's what we ordered. 1. Kung pao chicken-lacked flavor - like where's the salt at?! 4/5 2. Egg drop- standard fare but it was tasty 5/5 3. Wonton- again for me, the broth was bland and my husband didn't get any innards- just the wonton shells- he liked it ok-3/5 4. Crispy chicken wings- yes crispy but dry and again needs seasoning 2/5 5. General Tso- nostalgic flavor from when I tried this in Austin 35 years ago -delicious 5/5 6. Egg rolls- pretty good 4/5 7. We came out feeling stuffed with lots of leftovers. Our adult platters came with soup, egg rolls, and we ordered drinks., The sugar rolls were an excellent desert at the end. This place is SO good! Every time I come, it is hard to decide what to order because I want everything on the menu. The teriyaki chicken and the orange chicken dishes were great. My boyfriend has also loved all the meals he had. The calamari was a little over-seasoned but the taste was good. The service here was really fast and the staff always checks on if you need anything. Last night, my family and I stopped by for dinner. We have stopped here for lunch and had a good meal. Last night, it was excellent. We ordered a "big" bowl of Hot & Sour soup. They came back and said they had run out but were making a fresh batch and it would take a little longer. About 5 minutes later, the soup arrived, and it was delicious. Hate telling people about it because I want to keep it for myself. Best Chinese food in Austin is actually in Bastrop. Portions are very generous. Each dish is seasoned perfectly. This is a chinese restaurant that celebrates Chinese-American cuisine by amping up the flavor. I had the garlic beef, stir fried with bamboo shoots, wood-ear, and water chestnuts in an amazing brown sauce. it was slightly spicy, tangy, rich and very flavorful. It's not a fancy place, but the décor is nice and the service is friendly. Mostly, the chef seems to have a passion for flavor. I don't come here for authentic regional cuisines, but for a bold take on Chinese American food in a comfortable setting with fair prices. They also seem to be good at frying things, too. We stopped at Chinese Dragon in Bastrop on the way home from a football game last weekend. We love that place. I have never ordered anything I didn't like. It's also a good place to go if you don't want to battle a crowd. We have never had to wait to be seated, even on a Saturday or at lunch. They have very large portions and I always have to ask for it to go box. My only complaint came when I got my bill. It was not itemized so I asked for an itemized bill. It was much higher than we usually pay. When the waitress asked us what kind of rice we wanted we said fried rice, and she did not inform us that there is an up charge of $2.50 for that. It may say that somewhere on the menu but neither of us saw it. They also charged us for two drinks and we only got one. Not sure how this happened but I will definitely check things more closely the next time we go. It was a shame we had the mixup because their food is excellent read more

Cold, bland Shrimp Lo Mein. Tasted like it was leftover from lunch. No sauce on it. Speaking of sauces, the Hunan Chicken was bland. It was supposed to be spicy. There was no plum sauce provided with the Moo Shu Pork. The pancakes that accompany the pork were not provided. The restaurant called me and I had to go back to get them and the egg rolls. Pulling up I had second thoughts, but boy was I wrong. It is refreshing to see a family owned restaurant with this level of quality and care put into the food. I stopped by because I was on the road and saw the sign. I wasn't disappointed and you won't be either. The service was top notch. I was checked on multiple times and the staff is very friendly and polite. This level of quality for service is few and far between now and days. My buddy introduced me to this place which is good since you can't really see it from the highway. It's a nice building in a weird location, but I will make every effort to go there as often as I can! We ordered the crab Rangoon, the curry beef, and the walnut shrimp - all were excellent, and very authentic! An absolutely first rate establishment. And not your grandmother's American Chinese. Their secret is a top notch Mexican owner and cook. * * * Mexican chefs and entrepreneurs have been opening up all sorts of restaurants in the Greater Austin area. There is no law that says Mexican entrepreneurs have to cook Mexican food. Many of them do not want to be trapped into a life making tacos and burritos until they die. Some of them open Red Sauce Italian restaurants. Some of these are first rate. Some of them open American Chinese places. Some of these are also first rate. Some of them do their own take on whatever cuisine they are cooking. Independent do-it-their-own-way restaurants are my favorite kind. Chinese Dragon is a Mexican chef's reinterpretation of American Chinese. Some of his variations hew close to the original. Other of his variations are really innovative. One five star dish is the Spicy Chicken. There are lots of Chinese spicy chicken dishes. Most follow the Szechuan formula of using chili oil. Some use the tiny red dried Chinese mini-peppers. Some use jalapenos (to good effect.) At Chinese Dragon, the chef uses dried Mexican chiles. My guess is that the chiles in question are guajillos. The results are fantabulous. You do not need many guajillo peppers to give a good flavor. Chinese Spicy Chicken here is spicy rather than downright hot. The dish is suave, comforting and massively interesting. It does not hurt that the green peppers, yellow peppers and water chestnuts that come with the dish are perfectly al dente and full of flavor. Lo Mein is interesting too. It is expensive here. ($5 a pop if you want Lo Mein as a side dish). The dish is totally worth it. The lo mein here is made with plain ordinary spaghetti. The Chinese noodles can stay home in the Chinese noodle store. The sauce is not an oriental sauce. Instead it is a plain ordinary thin brown sauce ... The same kind of brown sauce you read about in basic cookbooks - right after the recipe for white sauce. Ironically, almost no one makes this kind of simple dish either at home or in restaurants. Spaghetti in brown sauce is an absolutely fantastic side dish. It is comfort food ... rather than some destination special treat. But it goes with the Mexi-Chinese food you are eating magnificently. * * * Most of the items on the menu are very standard Chinese dishes. I would have to eat through a lot more of the menu to know how many dishes are innovative vs standard. But I would not mind doing that. The room is beautiful and well decorated. (Special kudos for the colored recess lighting and the pictures that have been painted right on to the wall.) The place draws a good crowd. This is a place well worth exploring. And ignore those Yelp reviews which say their food did not taste like "real Chinese". Innovative cooking never tastes like what people eat everywhere else. My husband and I visited the Chinese Dragon Restaurant for the first time today for dinner. The outside always got our attention but the grass was often needing to be cut and many times we wondered if the place was a legit restaurant. We saw the reviews and decided to give it a try besides the neglect of the outside facilities. The inside was clean and inviting. We ordered the fried rice combo (chicken, beef and shrimp), and my husband ordered the sweet and sour chicken. The food was delicious, tasted fresh, authentic and big portions too! Reasonably good Chinese food. The service was good. I had the shrimp spring roll because those are my favorite and usually made fresh. Peanut sauce could have been better. I don't think it was made fresh at the restaurant. Egg roll was made from a prepackaged source and was OK. Kung Pao chicken was alright, nothing extraordinary though. After checking out progress on our home that's under construction, we decided to grab lunch in the area. Chinese Dragon came up on Yelp with good reviews so we decided to give it a try. It's just off of Hwy 71 going into Bastrop from Austin. Based the photos we'd seen in reviews, we were surprised to pull up to a fairly new building. Inside was nicely decorated and clean. We were greeted and told to sit wherever we liked. Once seated, a young lady approached with menus and requested our drink orders. She returned just a few minutes later to deliver drinks and request our food order. Since it was 1pm on Saturday we were able to order from the lunch menu. Nice to get lunch specials on the weekend that include soup or appetizer and choice of fried or white rice. The hot and sour soup was tasty! My Pepper Steak was excellent -- tender cuts of beef with a good balance of peppers and onions cooked in a tasty sauce. My husband enjoyed the Sesame Chicken (it was good but I prefer white over dark meat). The service was prompt and friendly and the food was great. Nice to find a good Chinese restaurant near our new home. We'll definitely return! read more

Finally found a decent Chinese restaurant in the Bastrop Texas area. Very authentic food and large portions. Sesame Tofu plate, spring rolls, vegetarian lo mein, moo shu vegetable and cashew nut chicken rounded out the take out dinner. The restaurant is off 71 on the Frontage Rd by the Ford dealer. The driveway and parking lot have potholes just like New Jersey, so we felt right at home. We'll definitely be back. They charge 3% extra for CC. Who would have thought one had to drive all the way to Bastrop from south Austin to eat good Chinese food. North Austin has more options for Asia. A Bastrop resident recommended this restaurant to us. He said, "... a Mexican family has a Chinese restaurant in town. The food is pretty good." It's located on the side of 71 away from high traffic areas. I'd never think of stopping here to eat let alone Chinese food. There is a dirty parking lot. When you walk in, the decor is eclectic with yellow and maroon walls. There are booths and tables in the middle. You may sit wherever you like. There were lots of local families and a birthday party. There were enough tables to accommodate a lot of people. Our waiter was a younger gentlemen with longer dark hair who smiled a lot. He was super friendly and attentive. I thought I'd like to hire him for our business. The greeter and the person serving drinkers were also super friendly. It felt like home. Food was served quickly. The service was 5 stars. The menu selection was abundant. We ordered steamed dumplings, triple delight, ginger fish, and lo mein. Our next visit I'll order the crispy duck or fried fish. I was a little disappointed when my fish was served. I was expecting a more traditional dish with a whole fried fish topped with the ginger sauce. However when I ate the fish, it was delicious. It satisfied my craving. If I order that dish again, I may ask for fried fish with the ginger sauce and sesame oil on the side. Ask for veggies with the side of lo mein. What a gem in Bastrop. I have eaten here 4 times hoping for a better experience. The food has been awful since they moved to their newest location. Yellow broccoli greasy no flavor egg rolls and soggy gross noodles. The rice was over cooked and crunchy. I am glad other folks are happy with the food.
