I lived in NYC for a few years and in my opinion thats where the best Chinese takeout is so I been trying to find a place close to that and this place was my answer. They mean it when they say New York style!! I got egg foo young, comes with 3 large patties, fresh veggies, fresh shrimp, it was sooo good nice and hot when i picked it up. I dont like gravy with my egg foo young so i swapped for garlic sauce and it was great! We have visited this location a few times over the years. They have a NY style of Chinese that many of the other restaurants don't offer or have in the area. They have a different taste to their food and style of cooking. So, it is something to be mindful of when eating here. A few things that we enjoy here are: Egg Rolls Crab Rangoon Plain Lo Mein Orange Chicken Egg Foo Young Tonight, we decided to try their boneless spare ribs combo with white rice. In comparison to other places, we thought they kinda skimmed on the serving size for the cost. The flavor of the meat is where I turned my nose up. It was vinegar based. I haven't had ribs with this much vinegar. Tooo much actually - it didn't make for an enjoyable experience at all. The only part we enjoyed was the egg rolls and white rice. Don't think I will be ordering this dish again. To be in line with COVID19 protocol, they ask that you order over the phone or online and to use cards. I did notice there were two people in the back that didn't have on a mask. If that is a concern for you, something to take into consideration as well. read more

Second time visiting. While we were waiting for our order to come up the owner kept busy tidying the place, washing the floor, filling condiments, etc. Her son helped a bit refilling the water cooler, Most of the time he either was watching videos very loudly, even tho he had headphones nearby, or was back talking to his mother. It got old after a while. This time instead of egg foo young we order chicken and broccoli and pork lo mein. Both were just so-so really. Nothing to write home about. Between that and the youngster, who I understand it's boring to be spending a Saturday afternoon stuck at mom & dad's restaurant, but still. Customers don't want to listen to a preteen butting up against a parent while trying to eat! I think we'll pass on a return visit. read more

Chinese #1 gets a revised review from me. After three years of being my go-to fast Americanized Chinese food place, I have suffered one too many plates that have gone into the rubbish bin to give it four stars. On the positive side, Chinese #1 is still fast, cheap, and comes with fresh vegetables that are usually cooked very nicely. They generally do a good job with the deep fried dishes (eg, Orange chicken). Also, if you're like me, you take great delight in shouting "CHINESE NUMBAH ONE!!!" when passing by. Then again, I am an immature man-child. On the negative side, not all the dishes are good. Some dishes fly out of the kitchen soaked in sugar, cheap vinegar, garlic, and corn starch thickener. They all end up tasting like sweet-and-sour something. And not a very good sweet-and-sour. They stopped offering spring rolls with lunch specials, except if you order more than 2. And I get that the owners can't get consistent child care, but they add to the general chaos of the place. Lastly, the owner seems to have stopped caring or is burned out. Not that I'm a neat freak, but the place is getting nasty and the place has slipped. If he doesn't care, I don't care. Instead, I will be going to Nice Bowls up the street where I'll get kick-ass cheapo Chinese-American food from a lady who couldn't be nicer. Or I'll treat myself right and go to C&T Wok or Taipei Cafe for authentic Chinese food. read more

I have eaten the food here twice in the past few weeks. Each time I have eaten here I have had diarrhea the next day. This place was the common link in both episodes of upset stomach. The food isn't great here either. Nasty. Update I have not eaten here since my last review and have not had any cases of diarrhea. I want to thank the Yelp community for their concern while I was ill. I am fully recovered and getting better everyday. I almost certain that Chinese #1 was the cause of my stomach issues. "New York Style" or "American Style," whatever you want to call it, this place is good. I ordered the Won Ton Soup, Steamed Dumplings, and Sweet and Sour Chicken w/ Pork Fried Rice. Everything was standard, the way I like it. The broth on the soup had good flavor, no added salt necessary. The Steamed Dumplings were actually the largest I've ever had, good taste, and they were really big---The dipping sauce was also good. Both the Chicken and the Sweet and Sour Sauce are what I'm used to at a Chinese restaurant, pretty standard, good pieces of chicken, and no extra sugar needed for the red sauce. I substituted the Pork Fried Rice for the White for an extra $2.5 and again, the rice is what I'd expect from a Chinese restaurant like this, good flavor and not over or under cooked. And, last but not least, the Fortune Cookies were good as well. If you're in the area, and in the mood for Chinese, I'd give it a try. I'll definitely be back again. read more

I got the shrimp with mushrooms which as expected had alot more random vegetables and filler then shrimp but it was A -Ok I did like the Hot and sour soup here and the dumplings were also great. Quick service. It was nice that the Chinese lady was quite fluent. We dined in, not one other person did but they did a lot of take out orders. The place is very small only 4 tables. One table was taken up by one of the workers loud child. Food came out quickly. Plates, silverware were all disposable, bottled drinks. The food does not taste bad, but they did not do the minimum of rinsing the grit out of the scallops! It's neither palatable nor healthy to be chewing and swallowing sand while eating. This also makes me wonder how well they rinse and wash their other vegetables. General Tzo's/fried rice: Rice is delicious; I agree with the other reviews. The chicken was fine; I don't feel like that was really general tzo's sauce because it should have had a kick of spice to it. This sauce was mild, uneventful, maybe sweet like ketchup. hunan shrimp/white rice: White rice met expectation. However, No. 1 Chinese Restaurant, you guys knocked the hunan shrimp out of the park! I have had a mixed experience based on 2 visits. In both cases, the staff was very pleasant/friendly. The first order was just for me (Szechuan chicken). This order was good quality, quantity, and hot. The next visit was for my whole family (5 meals: General Tso's, Pepper Steak and Onion (2), Steam Shrimp and Broccoli, and Szechuan chicken again). This order was a mixed bag quality-wise. It was not terrible, but .. only the steamed shrimp meal was hot. The other meals were luke warm.The pepper steak was kind of light on the steak. The chicken was inconsistent quality (some pieces tender, some not so). I have a feeling the second order was adversely influenced by how busy they were at the time. It is a small place and so I think they may be easily overwhelmed. read more
