The best quality Mexican food in the area! The cooking here is great, the flavors are amazing and the prices aren't too shabby! I was a little upset to see that for tacos, it's $.50 extra per taco to get lettuce tomato onions and cheese. I thought those things were usually free? Regardless, I added them to my tacos and it really filled the taco. I ordered a lengua, chorizo, and buche taco they were all very tasty but the buche taco was a bit too burnt and crispy. This is not a criticism because that might be how it's always made - this was my first time ever having buche. Every time I've come here, the service is just a bit too long. I only ordered takeout here and expect it to be quick. However, the wait time for your food is just as long as if you were just sitting in. Of note, you have to pay in the adjacent deli. Not with the cook or the waitress if you're ordering to go. In the adjacent deli, you can find drinks and snacks to go with your order. This place has great food and is a lovely neighborhood staple. I would definitely say this place is a hidden gem since it's located between Broadway and Amsterdam and not on the main streets. I came upon at the recommendation of a fellow yelp eliter who lives in the area. This place is your typical hole in the wall place that serves good food at a good price. Five dollars for a burrito or a chimmichunga. Can't beat that. I will say this though I still would prefer the $7 burritos at the la Viagra taco truck on 145th. But this place is a close second. How this place stays in business with such service is beyond me. The food is good and reasonably priced, you you get what you pay for. I used to order regularly and delivery is consistently slow. The last time I ordered, it took them an 1.5 hours to deliver. When it finally got here, there was no drink and the bread was soggy. Imagine what happens to bread when you spill water on it. You order your food then pay at the bodega/mexican store that's connected to the restaurant. If you are here expecting great service then you will be disappointed. I had the tacos de Chorizo (still my favorite meat here), tacos al pastor, tacos de pollo, tacos de bistec. Also my chorizo tostada was super tasty. Best meats I think are chorizo, bistec, and al pastor. Chicken is light on seasoning compared to other meats, but they give you a lot of it in the taco. Good protein and low fat if you are into that healthy fetish. You can't really go wrong for the price. You will eat a lot of food for $10 or under. I got 4 tacos (nopales, oreja pig ear, lengua beef tongue, buche pig stomach) Mexican style ($3 each) and a carnitas huarache ($6). I had two tacos which are very tasty and filling. Chinelos food is the bomb.com! I am a huge fan of real Mexican food and this place absolutely delivers. The latest Latinx and Reggaeton hits are blasting as you walk in. The 2-4 person seating tables circle the open stove behind a counter. There is a bodega next door for drinks and where you pay for your meal. The ordering system is a little odd. You have to order and pay in two different places. Order at the counter and pay through the archway in the bodega. Everyone is super friendly and pretty much everyone speaks Spanish regulars and staff alike. They're welcoming regardless of your preferred language and even listen to me butcher my order in Spanish haha. We had a minor mix up with our taco order. I somehow ordered us a vegetable taco, oops. If you're confused on what I'm talking about....trust me, you will understand what I'm talking about once you get there. Here's the scenario... 1. When entering the restaurant side, you're greeted by a lady who clearly speaks Spanish only. She'll punch in your order at the "cash register" and hand you a receipt. At first, I thought I had to pay her there since she clearly punched in my order at a "cash register" but no...that's not how they do it here. They want to make things exciting for you! 2. You must take that receipt.....and walk to the other side of the store (the bodega side) and pay for your order with another young girl who speaks English. (Be sure to pick up a drink before you pay.) 3. After you pay...she'll stamp your receipt "PAID" and now you have to walk back to the restaurant side and give your stamped receipt to the lady at the grill. 4. If you don't follow this process before your order is done, the lady preparing your food will start talking to you in Spanish about how you need to pay first. Trust me, I'm saving you the confusion for all you non-Spanish speakers out there! I didn't know what the heck she was saying at first. But with enough arm flaring, I finally figured it out! I don't understand the process of this whole ordeal of walking back and forth just to pay for your food when there's clearly a register on the restaurant's side. Wouldn't it just make sense to just pay for your food where you take your order at since they have a register there? I don't get it. Other than that. The food is pretty good for how cheap it is. Another thing. Why is the music here so loud?! Sometimes I'm the only customer in the restaurant and the music is blaring loud! Who are they playing the music so loud for? All of Harlem? I guess so. If I come with a friend....we literally are yelling to each other trying to have a conversation and we sound like 2 old folkies with hearing aids on saying "Huh?? I can't hear you! Speak louder!!" I end up leaving with my ear drums making humming sounds. As for delivery, their menu says free delivery but I called 2 times to have my order delivered and I was told that they don't deliver. Huh? I kinda wished the meat was a bit more flavorful and juicy. Also, I'm not used to eating my burrito with cheese on top and with a knife and fork. As a Texas native, they have the best chicken nachos around, we've ordered 3 times in a week because it's just so good. Incredible spicy green salsa, and great chicken tinga quesadilla. If you like beer I recommend the Victoria beer it compliments the food so well. Call them up- the apps take so much of their money and jack up the prices. Chinelos II is a hidden gem near CCNY. I ducked in during a sudden downpour and ordered a veggie burrito to bring with me to campus. The ordering process is unique, but not confusing; you order at the counter, pay at the register over in the grocery store side of Chinelos, and bring the receipt (now marked "paid") back to the counter for your food. Five minutes later, your food is ready. And it's delicious. It probably tastes extra-good because you know you only paid $4 for a giant burrito. In fact, since everything is so absurdly cheap and there's no tax, you can put a dollar an the tip jar for the lovely person who made your food and STILL have a huge lunch for 5 bucks. I really enjoyed being on Spanish mode here, but you don't speak any Spanish just point at what you want to order using one of the take-out menus on the counter. Place looks pretty divey from the street but is spic-and-span on the inside. Staff is really friendly and there's actually table service, a surprise for a Harlem joint selling $2.50 tacos. Tried the cecina (good not great) and the carnitas (great not good, featuring juicy shreds of pork that's been crisped on the edges). This is a great place to get a burrito or chimichanga. I have not tried the other items on the menu, but the burritos and chimichangas are to die for. If you are in the mood for a Mexican style dinner/lunch, or even breakfast, I strongly recommend that you go to Chinelos. The meat options for the burritos are good- chicken, pork, beef, chorizo, and I think one other. You can basically put whatever you want in the burrito. If you are a Chipotle kind of person, I would recommend that you go here first. Their food tastes similar, but Chinelos menu is way cheaper. I strongly suggest that you go here for a quick, cheap meal that still tastes good. The rooms are small, but there usually isn't that many people there so it doesn't get crowded. They are constantly getting my orders wrong whether its adding onions even after I asked them to be removed, or completely forgetting the order altogether! This place in addition to being part II, serves as both a restaurant (in the most basic of meanings) and a grocery (with tons of Mexican imports, IE sodas chips etc) . I've only had one meal the 8+ times I've been there and that is the their $4 burritos. Yes that's right $4, and yes they are the same size as the $6-$9 burritos that might find else where. Either way the burrito selection, 14 in all, include everything from beef tongue and pig ear to shrimp (the only one I have not tried, which is also the only one that is $6.) and beef steak are good with freash guacolmole made with each meal.
