China Wok is a lowkey Chinese restaurant in Broadview Heights. I visited after working up an appetite after skiing. I discovered that it's one of the only Chinese restaurants open later in the day in the surrounding suburbs. I was very excited to try a new restaurant in this part of town but it was a miss for me. AMBIANCE: Simple surroundings with Chinese menus displayed on the monitors, red lanterns descending from the ceiling, simple art, and plants. The tones are light orange and peach. The dining room only has a few tables of four. The dining room also has a chest freezer that is unexpected. The decor is pretty dated yet exactly what you'd picture a Chinese restaurant to be. FOOD: Multi page has it all - appetizers, soups, fried rice, chow mein, chop suey, chow mein fun, egg foo young, lo mein, chef specialties, Hunan and Szechuan Specialties. There is also a small category with special diet dishes. The diet dishes include steamed veggies, some with shrimp and chicken. I ordered S22 - Honey Chicken ($12.75). It comes with a side of white rice, no egg roll. I took a few bites of the dish and settled for chips for dinner. Honey Chicken portion was generous and was in a separate container. Chicken pieces were very dry. They didn't seem to be cooked in sauce but rather sauce was added later. I heard some microwaving during meal preparation and it was probably for this sauce. Honey sauce is just melted honey. The two ingredients just aren't cohesive. Side white rice was small, too clumpy and dry. The meal wasn't at all enjoyable. SERVICE: The service was very intense. I got the impression that the employee did not want to cook anything at this point of the day. I have to say that meal prep was almost instant, much faster than at other Chinese food takeouts. The employee also welcomed me to return, which was nice. FREE TEA: The restaurant serves free hot tea (flavor unknown). Disposable glasses are available. It's a great treat for dine in or to go especially on frosty winter days. PARKING: Large plaza parking lot. Plenty of parking! Overall, it was a quick late evening stop with mediocre food. New to the area and very picky about Chinese food. Tried this place a few times and pleased with the food. The location has tables for dine in but the impression is mostly carry out. Always greeted immediately and food cooked fast without a long wait. I love that their roast pork is thinly sliced and well cooked. Pieces are not fatty or chewy. Vegetables are nice and fresh and perfectly cooked with a little crunch left. Not cooked too long or soggy, even in brown sauce. The General Taos and Orange chicken is nice and crisp, but would love more of a white/breast option for consistency. Some of the pieces can be stringy/chewy. Might have been a one off with the lo mein, but the noodles seemed too soggy or overcooked in water. Will give another try. Their egg rolls are great NY style- fat, round kind about the length of 3-4". Hard to find in some places. Reasonable pricing and food is always cooked fresh to order! Ehh. Chicken was weird in both texture and taste. It reminded me of cooked frozen chicken they recooked. The amount they gave for their family dinner was disappointing. The portion was like what you get for a lunch special and in the smallest size container they have. They don't even give you any sauces and 1 fortune cookie to split between multiple people (I unfortunately tried it). The cookie was stale too. The soup was very salty. The egg roll wasn't bad, not not good either. I've waited a few weeks to do a review so I wouldn't give it 1 star, I'm not sure if I should be giving it 3 either. I wish I had better news to report, but I can't, and I hate giving "negative" reviews. But, this is the 1st Chinese American food I've had where I couldn't eat half of my dish because it was inedible. I ordered sweet and sour chicken which is usually my favorite from a place like this, wonton soup, "steamed" dumplings, and pork fried rice. Half of my sweet and sour chicken was dried out and over cooked, and those pieces were also crispy. I've never had sweet and sour chicken where the breading was crispy and the chicken was so dried out it was hard to chew. The dumplings were actually ok, and I don't even prefer these style of dumplings, but they looked half fried and half steamed not "steamed." The rice was cooked properly, but I shouldn't have to bite into onions. The onions were larger than the pieces of pork. Lastly, the wontons in the soup were good, but the broth was a little off in flavor. Disappointing. Not even worth trying. read more

The food is average, similar to other Asian take out places. What always got me was the little boy answering phones, working the cash register and handing the food to customers. Do child labor laws not apply to family run businesses? Oh and the yelling and fighting between the husband and wife in mandarin is always entertaining while you wait. read more

I really don't leave bad reviews but this place is awful. We ordered 2 general tso chicken 1 sesame chicken and 1 garlic beef. The beef was awful very poor cut of beef and obviously not marinated properly it was like eating boiled beef in a very bland broth with 75% veggies. The general tso was soggy and very bland as well as the sesame chicken. I can say the shrimp egg roll was delightful that I ordered extra. Another friend of us ordered Mongolian beef and said the same about his beef no flavor and chewy. Food is cold,ordered egg foo young,the container with the gravy had a hole in the bottom clearly happened when packaged so all the gravy was all over bottom of bag an containers. Love this family owned and operated takeout. I've had Chinese food in many different countries during my 20+ year career in the military and by far this is one of the most authentic cuisines offered. Family owned. Food is always fresh and hot and service is always with a smile. I had a difficult time finding a reliable and delicious takeout Chinese restaurant in this area and was about to give up when my wife spotted this place and we tried it. I go every week now for years, sometimes twice weekly. I love their Chicken Broccoli and House Lo Mein and I am confident everything else is great as well. My favorite place to get takeout! -A Bland Chicken Dinner- Very average Chinese place. My girlfriend and I have been searching around for good Chinese places and this place was fairly close to where we now live. I placed an order over the phone for General Tso's Chicken and Orange Chicken meals (which come with fried rice, an egg roll, and a fortune cookie). When placing the order, the woman on the phone seemed overly rushed, but she took my order and phone number. After receiving those, she hung up. I never said my name, and I never was given a time to come pick up my order. I decided to just head from my place to China Wok and see if it was ready. On arrival, I know now why she seemed so rushed, she was practically working alone. She asked if I had ordered the General Tso and Orange Chicken, I said yes and was given a 5 minute wait time. I picked out a few drinks from their fridge, paid, and found a place to sit. It wasn't long before my order was ready, service seemed more polite than it was over the phone. I left and brought the food back to my apartment. My girlfriend and I opened our food, which was labeled so we could tell our orders apart, and gave it a try. The rice was phenomenal, the eggrolls were large, and the chicken was well sauced. The chicken was lacking in flavor as the General Tso's Chicken was not very spicy (dispite having hot peppers on the menu picture), and the Orange Chicken was not very sweet. Serving size was nice and filling, price was pretty standard for Chinese, service over the phone was not very good (but much better in person), plenty of sauce. The only reason I wouldn't give it a 4 star rating would be because the chicken was not to my standard in flavor, and the service over the phone was pretty rough. read more

Never order from here!!!!! I've had two bad experiences in a row. The first, they messed up my order. At first refused to fix it bc I wasn't going to pay more since they charged for the less expensive item. I told you what I wanted, it's not my fault you got the order and the total wrong. After arguing for a couple of minutes the woman working, finally agreed to fix it without me paying more. Then I went on my way. That was roughly 6 months ago. Today I decided to try them again bc of convenience, and again it was a horrible experience. I called and started ordering, I was trying to ask if they had a certain dish, but wasn't sure how to word my question. The guy I'm talking to immediately starts being short with me and sighing, like I'm bothering him. After he asks if I'm done ordering and I say yes, he immediately hangs up on me. Doesn't tell me a total or how long it will be. I call back and in as pleasant a voice as I could do I ask the same guy how long it'll take for my order. He says, "20 minutes. I said that." Me: "No, you actually hung up on me." Him: "Oh, I'm sorry for the inconvenience." (In a snarky tone) Me: "Thank you so much. I appreciate it. Bye" Then, basically convinced they were going to do horrible things to my food, called to cancel. I should have listened to my gut and not ordered here again. read more

For the most part, take-out Chinese restaurants are fairly indistinguishable, and, in terms of menu offerings, China Wok is on par with what you find at most other places. That being, said the quality of the food is certainly a notch above where your expectations could reasonably be set. I have been here on numerous occasions and have sampled much of the menu, so for the purposes of this review I will concentrate on some of the standouts. The fried rice is amazing. I mean, truly and seriously amazing. Each bite is full of soft, pillowy rice and lots of vegetables (with the veggie fried rice) or chicken (with the chicken fried rice). I could eat this dish every day the rest of my life and still crave it the next morning. They have the standard array of soups, and all are pretty decent. They are served way too hot (must be heated up in the microwave), so just keep that in mind. The chicken lo mein and sesame chicken are both excellent, but the sesame chicken is only served as a full dinner. There are other dishes (such as General Tso's chicken) that are offered in the same manner. That's disappointing because what's better than sampling multiple Chinese dishes, right? The sweet & sour offerings are the only thing I've tried that I'd recommend avoiding. It's not that it's bad, per se, but it's just boring. Chunks of deep fried chicken served with a side of tangy sauce isn't the worst thing in the world, but it's not that different than what you can get absolutely anywhere. Not worth the grease and fat. One of the things that draws me to this place in the cleanliness of the restaurant. It's absolutely immaculate. The service is also very friendly. It's a family affair at China Wok with a man and a woman and two little kids always working. The little boy is always funny and friendly. He generally will talk to you as he sweeps the dining room as you wait on your food. Overall, if you live in the area and are in the mood for Chinese, don't hesitate to give this place a shot. read more

First time ordering, and last. I ordered bourbon chicken and am ABSOLUTELY sure this was not chicken. It looked like hunks of pig feet. Won ton filling had an odd flavor. I had the seafood delight today for carry-out. Portions were very large. However, overall the food was not very good. The steamed rice had a unknown flavor. I don't know what spice they added but it was unpleasant to the palate. The seafood delight had two pieces of lobster that was way overcooked. It was extremely chewy as were the shrimp. Even though the menu states 'jumbo shrimp', they were not. The crab meat was not real crab, although the menu states 'crab meat'. It was the typical substitute crab concoction. I did not find a scallop, though one sliver might have been a piece of a scallop. Probably 50% of the dish was broccoli. Way too much. And there was little or no flavor to the entire dish. Not a good experience. There are much better Chinese restaurants in the area. Would not recommend and would not order again from this place. read more

When it comes to Chinese, I am very picky. I've tried out many places in the area solve them left me not feeling so great after. But this place is consistent everything taste very good I would put it in my top five in the Cleveland area for Chinese food. ( for carry out Chinese food) it's obviously family owned if you've ever gone in and the people there are very friendly. I would recommend that everyone try this place out. My husband and I love this place! We moved to the area in June and have ordered take out at least 5 times. It is very consistent each time. I love the cashew chicken and the chicken low mein.
