Staff very helpful. Quick service, generous portions, very good food (no msg, which I'm allergic to). Reasonable prices. Best in the area.

The food was expensive and terrible. The poo poo platter was cold, dry and greasy. The beef lomein was oily. Definitely not going back

My myyy! I've had Chinese in the heart of Chinatown in a sketchy ally and I've had questionable Chinese in middle America. This place ranks as a rock solid 4. The ingredients are fresh. The efficiency is rapid. The flavors are slightly under seasoned(which I prefer). There is no post Chinese finger swell from the sky rocket levels of sodium. No MSG bloat and coma crash. Highest recommendation for this region of NE. Bon appetite! read more

My new go to when I'm in Putnam. I love the egg drop wonton combo soup. They don't skimp on the wontons. Chicken fingers are good too

Food is good. Picked up food recently and it was ready even faster than they estimated. Appreciated the range of food options and good prices. Feels authentic. Their crab Rangoon was fantastic. General tsaos was so so. Chicken with snow peas was great!! I'd go back. Good option for general Chinese food. read more

Food was great and hot ! excellent! However the paper dinner napkins given us smelled of dirty dish rag, and the door in the bathroom was sticky and very dirty. If those things aren't clean what does the kitchen look like.... read more

Good food and good service. Food is always consistent everytime we go. We always recommend this place.

I feel too bad giving only one star but what kind of Chinese food is this? I ordered all of my favorite classics: spring rolls, beef teriyaki, crab rangoons, bbq spare ribs, pork fried rice, beef with broccoli, sweet and sour chicken, veggie lo mien, and a hot and sour soup.... This place had such good reviews but I will definitely not be returning. The food was fresh but I think McDonald's would've had better Chinese food. Everything just had such a weird flavor. The bbq spare ribs were SO dry, the spring rolls definitely seemed like they were frozen and they tasted like soggy puff pastry outside without any puff. The sweet and sour chicken and crab rangoons were fine at best but the lo mien was not good and the beef and broccoli was left practically untouched. The hot and sour soup had no hot or sour element to it. Maybe this is what is popular around this area but this didn't taste like any Chinese food I've ever had. If you are looking for good classic American Chinese food I would keep looking. read more

Decent grab and go quick food! Large portions. Service is fast and friendly. Take out is simple and straightforward.

We were surprised to find no one here on a Saturday night. Right after we came they brought out hot fresh food for the buffet. We'll be back! read more

This is my favorite Chinese place in the area. I drive 25 minutes each way from Brooklyn just for them. The crab Rangoons are fantastic. Always had good food there. read more

China Star - A5 - Chinese Near Me - Putnam, Connecticut

Ordered a Pu Pu platter on a Friday night for take out. Picked it up, took it home, and surprise! The wings, shrimp, and rangoons, looked like the were either over fried, or the deep fryer needed an oil change. The quality went from top notch, to common all you can eat buffet type. Many times, this place was the standard to measure Chinese food to, but what happened??? I hope this is a one time thing, and not the normal now. read more

It's all about the food China Star is a very typical Americanized Chinese type place. Looks like a bezillion other restaurants of this kind and even has a common name that I've seen numerous times. It has a few booths inside but like most restaurants of this type I suspect most of their business is take out. The decor is exactly what you would expect and the menu has the standard fare. Certainly at first glance nothing stands out. However the one thing that separates this restaurants from all it's kindred cousins is the food. It was excellent. Not only were the portion huge, prices reasonable but the food was definitely exceptional. The chicken and broccoli I got was probably the best I every had. The broccoli was crisp and colorful and and the whole thing was covered by a very light but different and tasty sauce. Quite a pleasant surprise. Sure, it isn't much to look at and the menu is the pretty much the same stuff but a restaurant is ultimately about the food. Considering the price, portions and superb quality of the food China Star represents the pinnacle of small, take out Chinese joints. read more

BEST CHINESE FOOD IN THE AREA! All the food is fresh, full of flavor and high quality. Really big portions. Besides some very fancy places in bigger cities around here, this is the best I've had. And I LOVE Chinese food. I have been everywhere! What I usually get is: SINGAPORE MEI FUN GENERAL TSO PAN FRIED DUMPLINGS EGGROLL RIBS ON THE BONE SOUPS But everything is great. The owner is super nice, too. I usually get take-out but if you sit down they are very friendly, the portions are even bigger, the plates are cute. It's great! read more

Busy mom to say the least and when there's no time in the day to do it all at least dinner can be done well. The food is good, pretty fast service considering how busy it gets, but if you are in a hurry call your order and pick up on the way. Prices are good, the most expensive thing in the menu is the Pu Pu Platter fir two (pt. pork fried rice included) for $18.25. The prices range from egg roll at $1.70 to chicken fingers (12 pieces) for $7.25 and chicken fried rice large order for $7.25. read more

We go to China star at least once every few weeks. Their food is excellent. Their takeout is always hot and freshly cooked. Their steamed potstickers are the best, and we've never had to wait long at all. I had to give them six stars if there was a spot for it. read more

I drive an hour just for their fried rice, general tso's tofu, pupu platter, and crab rangoon! I've been coming here for over 10 years. The quality has always been 100% perfect. The crab rangoon is perfectly fried with a delicious sweet filling, tofu crispy to perfection, and they have most flavorful and delicious fried rice you can get in all of New England. Generous portions too! On top of that, you get the pleasure of interacting with the friendly staff -- fantastic service!!! You will LOVE it here. read more

Stopped for lunch. Boneless ribs and pork fried rice. Food was hot. Tasty. Good amount. Nice take out place.

We've gone here many times since we moved here 11 years ago. We keep trying it thinking it will get better. I think tonight was our last try. Usually we get a few good tasting items and then 1 or two not so great... tonight... gross... couldn't even eat it... the crab ragoon tasted like it was cooked 3 days ago, noodles were soggy and tasted like 50 year old canned asparagus, rice was hard and dry, chicken was all breaded grease and no chicken... it was just terrible all around. read more

I won't call this your everyday, average Chinese takeout place because- while the food is to be expected, the quality is not. I placed my order online, which was nice. It allowed me to get out all of my hemming and hawing while utilizing my back button. The site could be easier to navigate, but I'm not complaining. I ordered steamed dumplings, hot & sour soup, boneless spare ribs, and a mongolian chicken combo dinner. dumplings were huge and, at 8 for $6 and change, a total value. they come pan-fried or steamed, and i went with steamed. sometimes that can cause the dough to be gummy, but these were clean, fresh, and delish. filling was plentiful and yummy. potsticker sauce came in its own little bag which initially caused me grief that it had possibly been left out (what's a dumpling without potsticker sauce?!), but was very pleased to see it was self-contained in case any spillage were to occur. hot & sour soup was one of the more complex i've had. it was chock full of egg, chicken, bamboo shoots, woodear mushrooms, tofu- you name it. spice level was moderate, and the viscosity was wonderful. boneless spare ribs were a great value. i got the small for $6 and change. these- to me- were cooked perfectly. they were just a bit charred, so there was a smoky essence that penetrated the sweet sauce. some might have found them overdone (and i'm not sure if this was just my order, or general practice), but i was over the moon. mongolian chicken. not what i'm used to. for me a "mongolian" preparation usually means a sweet sauce with a heavy presence of scallions. this was completely different. what i got was super moist and tender chicken with assorted veg (onions, carrots, mushrooms, baby, corn, peppers, water chestnuts) in a tangy/spicy sauce. it's delicious, but not what i think of when i think "mongolian." the pork fried rice that accompanied it was delicious and chock full of tiny pork chunks, bean sprouts, and onion. the egg roll was standard and left nothing to disappoint. all in all, i would (will) definitely come here again to have my chinese takeout needs met. tip: while you can order online, you'll need to pay in store. they no longer accept payment over the phone. read more

As American style Chinese food goes, this place is great. It's greasy but in the best possible way. We ordered a bunch of food tonight including 2 Pupu platters, 2 General Tso Chicken, Cashew Shrimp and House Lo Mein. It was enough food to feed 8-10 people but we were only 5 so there was tons of leftovers. The price seemed a little high at the time $79 but there was so much food that it was still a pretty good deal. read more

I thought that the shrimp fried rice was spectacular. It had great flavors and lots of tiny shrimp that melted like butter! will come again!

Crab Rangoon's, chicken wings or fingers, general tsao's and definitely a must: the French fries. Delicious French fries. All good, great price. Usually don't change it up personally. Maybe one day. read more

I LOVE this Chinese restaurant!! Best one I've ever eaten at. The wait time for picking up food is so reasonable and the cuisine is amazing! I have tried almost everything on the menu, and continue to be impressed after eating there for years now. Also, the staff is always friendly and helpful. The prices are reasonable, too! read more

Ordered a combo with ribs, sweet & sour chicken, crab Rangoon and veg lo mein. Plus a small order of pork friend rice. Walked in on a Friday night and placed order, took maybe 7 minutes. The girl was very friendly and food was excellent. The ribs were very very good. I've tried a few other local Chinease restaurants and have to say this is my go to from now on. So good!! read more

By far the best Chinese food place that we've found since moving to the area! Everything is always consistently tasty and of good quality. I enjoy the varied veggie/tofu options and my husband loves the rice noodle dishes. The inside of the restaurant is nothing to brag about and is exactly what you would expect from a Chinese restaurant in a strip mall setting. But, the food is really good compared to other places we've visited in the area. You can also order online, but this option is a little difficult to navigate and is missing a lot of descriptions of dishes. It's much easier to either order in person or via phone and ask questions. The staff is very friendly and helpful! read more

Im picky about take out Chinese but this place surprised me! Best take out around! Food was tasty and me and my friends didn't get the squirts! Only complaint was when I called, the guy who answered was a bit rude! But the food was excellent! Will definitely be going back! read more

This was the worst Chinese food I have ever eaten! I paid top price for everything, and got nothing for my money. This was our first time and will be the last! The Rangoon was burnt. The lomain was overdone. And the beef teriyaki was a tiny piece of meat on a huge stick! And with the Covid 19 in full swing. I was made to stand in line with other people. They wouldn't even offer to bring it out to you! If there was a way to give them no star's, that's the rating I would have gave! read more

Definitely as good as Chinese food gets around here. We get take out frequently and have had one meal that was off. When I mentioned it on my next visit the owner couldn't have been more apologetic or accommodating. read more

I really like China Star. Best Chinese food in Putnam. We are regulars and the quality is always consistently good.

Absolutely love this place. The service is great and the owners go out of the way to be welcoming. The food is very well done. It's your typical Chinese food menu but done very well and served in awesome reusable Tupperware containers. It makes reheating a snap! read more

This place has really really good Chinese food. The general tso's chicken is great, egg rolls and crab Rangoon are very good and taste freshly homemade. They even have their own home made duck sauce! We spend weekends near Putnam and always loved this place. Just went last night though and it must have been sold. Totally different food with a burned undertaste. The fried rice had barely a vegetable and had to do a major search of the shrimp egg foo yung to find any shrimp. The main disappointment is the really that lack of flavor now. We loved going there in the past but the new cook or owners have changed it to another restaurant entirely! read more
