We've been going to "OG China Star" since 1999. We always bragged to others about what a gem this place was. Tonight, we ordered, and the food was terrible. I won't get into the details about Crab (not) Rangoon. or the Chicken fingers that taste like corn dogs. It's sad to see a what was a high-quality restaurant crater like this - obviously opting for cheap suppliers and salty prepared dishes. I hope the "new management" has the phone number of the "old management" so they can call them for help. Otherwise, this place will be re-branded within a year to the new-new-China Star. They use Beyond Menu for delivery. They charged $7.00 for delivery and $1.00 for convenience fee. I live less than 3 miles away from the restaurant. I have ordered food from this place for 32 years. We've enjoyed ordering from this restaurant for years, even after moving away from Amesbury. Ordered online last week. Should have been tipped off by the disclaimer pictured below. We drove 25 minutes, gave our name on the order and confirmed what we ordered. Waited for them to complete it. Drove 25 minutes home to find a completely different order. AND they charged us for the more expensive order. We called and said we weren't driving back and forth again. China Star is a casual Chinese takeout place in Downtown Amesbury, which is order at the counter with open kitchen and hard booth seating for eating in. The menu offerings are the standard Chinese dishes including Szechuan, moo shi, and curry dishes. Most dishes under $11. Luncheon Specials, White Rice Specials and Special Combinations ($5.25-$9.25) are served any time (except Dec 24 & 31). See the menu at http://www.chinastaramesbury.com/ They also have a strict sauce policy with specific sauces included only with specific items. This policy is posted on the wall and in the menu. For example, duck sauce or apple sauce served with most appetizers and appetizers with combos, hoisin sauce with moo shi dishes only, mustard sauce with appetizers only, ginger sauce with Peking raviolis & scallion pancakes only, and soy sauce with fried rice, chow mein, chop suey, lo mein, egg foo yong, soup, and stir fry dishes. Sauce side orders are priced accordingly. The sauce policy is fair here and not as stringent as Hong Kong Express in Portsmouth, NH where they charge for all sauces. Anyways, I stopped in here and ordered the L11a: Egg Roll, 4 Crab Rangoons & Pork Lo Mein ($7.50 plus tax), which was ready in about 10 minutes. The egg roll was nice and crispy outside, filled with cabbage & pork. The crab rangoons had a nice crunch filled with cream cheese filling. The pork lo mein had a mix of firm noodles tossed with green peppers, carrots, water chestnuts, sliced mushrooms, sprouts, onions, and tender roast pork strips. The food tasted fine overall and I decided to eat the food over two meals and refrigerated the food. However, when I went to heat up the food, the chilled lo mein dish was covered with white colored congealed gel indicating the greasiness of the food. This is the original downtown Amesbury Chinese take-out spot. I have gotten so many letter D plates over the years (That's pork fried rice, steak teryaki, chicken fingers and boneless ribs). The food is always great and prepared quickly. They don't deep fry the teriyaki or take tons of short cuts like the uber-cheap places do. The entree dishes are also right on. The food here is decent, I don't order Chinese food much but when I do I usually pick here. Deliveries come pretty quick and their prices are very manageable, when I go in I usually see the same customer wearing the same shirt all the time and ordering the same D plate so I see they have a lot of regulars. They deliver to Newburyport!! Very tasty food, I have never had something I didn't like. Most flavorful dumplings, crunchy on the outside, but soft and chewy on the inside. this place got 5 stars because they took our order 8 minutes before they closed tonight and didn't give us a hard time about it. They close at 10pm. We called and placed our order at 9:52pm (rude? yeah but we didnt realize they closed at 10 until we got there!), we pulled up front at 9:59pm and they seemed happy to serve us. We got a small order of chicken fried rice, small chicken fingers and a small order of steak teriyaki. It was just over $15 which we thought was reasonable. Horrible!! The food is nothing more than MSG saturated MOOSH. It looked, smelled, and tasted disgusting. The food was delivered lukewarm /cold. Their crab rangoons were passable but the rest was beyond awful. I would not recommend this garbage to my worst enemies, STAY CLEAR!!! We decided to switch it up last night and get takeout from China Star rather than their competitor down the street, which is where we usually order from. After our order, we're going to stick with the other place. Lo Mein & "Garlic" Noodles were dry, bland, and boring. Garlic noodles had little to no flavor, and had no sauce whatsoever. It was as if someone placed the noodles in a paper towel and completely dried them off before serving them. And, they should have been cooked a tad longer in my opinion. I ordered the white rice and veggies and was completely unimpressed. Again, no sauce. The veggies were strange- I was expecting your usual vegetables from Chinese restaurants: pea pods, beans, onions, water chestnuts, mushrooms, etc. There were HUGE pieces of tomato (as if someone cut a tomato into 3rds & threw it in!) There was a variety of vegetables but it was mostly big pieces of onion. Rice was under cooked. Spring roll was good, but nothing special. Yes, once in a while it isn't so great, but when you get it about once a month odds are good that will happen. The guys that work here are great, and never fail to remember my whole order (one time I went in and strayed from the usual, and the cashier said "What, no scallion pancake?").
