China Moon isn't necessarily a bad restaurant, but it could definitely improve. The restaurant itself has a cool vibe but it has a lot of issues, one person in my party was vegetarian and could only eat a little bit of the rice, noodles, and broccoli. My first issue is the menu, the lady will not let you order off the menu during buffet unless you're doing takeout, which to me makes no sense. Next the lady that is usually at the front isn't very pleasant, she doesn't greet you or respond when you say thank you because I was trying to be polite. I feel like she doesn't care how she treats the customers because it's the only Chinese restaurant within 30 miles. read more

We drove up to Madison on a Saturday evening to check this place out since Sioux Falls lacks Chinese buffet options. It's a fairly small place with a very casual environment in downtown. They had about 12 entrees to choose from and another section of cold items (salad, fruit, etc) and 2 soups. You pay at the back of the restaurant before helping yourself to the buffet and fountain drinks. The price was reasonable. Food was warm and overall decent--but I don't feel a strong need to return anytime soon (but it's also a 40 minute drive each way). May be a good takeout place if you live in the area. read more

This place needs a update. Egg rolls where way too small. The Egg Drop soup was bad. This place needs to be redone.

Its good but its not the best, if you absolutely need a fix for Chinese and don't wanna drive 45+ minuets then this is the only option. Service is nothing special cuz the only interaction you have is paying, even when you get the buffet you speak once with a worker then you just eat. read more

Tried the buffet which was an unfortunate experience. Food was either undercooked or overcooked and everything was lukewarm. The chunks of broccoli in the beef & broccoli were totally raw and beef was chewy. Couldn't tell what the meat was on a stick it was so overcooked as to be inedible and tasteless. Egg rolls were 95% cabbage. Couldn't find a sliver of pork in the pork lo mein and the soups were both cold. If you like chinese food you'll be disappointed. To make matters worse, the buffet is right in front of the cashier so on top of poorly prepared food, I'd question how sanitary it is to have a buffet located where people are waiting for their take out or paying. I know this is the only chinese restaurant in Madison but I'd drive to Sioux Falls before coming back here. read more

Food is good, place is clean, buffet is usually kept up well. We like the pork fried rice, crab Rangoon, and the egg drop soup is good.

China Moon isn't bad. It's not great by a long shot, but it isn't terrible. Considering that it's the only available option in Madison (and that it's a buffet on top of that), it could be much worse. Food: The food is alright! It'll definitely hit the spot when you're craving Chinese food. Sure, you can get better Chinese in Sioux Falls, but as long as you're going while they're still making food, your biggest complaint will probably just be "I've had better". I do wish there was a little bit more variety, though. There's maybe ten things available for dinner, and I don't usually see much variation in what's out. Usually all the same things, but they're also the basic staples of Americanized Chinese food: white rice, fried rice, general tso's chicken, lo mein, and so on. It's all "safe" dishes. Atmosphere: Let's be completely honest: you don't go to China Moon for the decor. Looking at the plush animals and Teletubbies that hang in the window are not the places main selling points. Nor is the music the main selling point, which is the same song looped over and over, for infinity. There have been times where I wonder if the song is purposely the same in order to get customers to spend as little time as possible at China Moon. Service: Considering it's a buffet, there's very little interaction with the staff aside from paying at the beginning of your visit. However, China Moon only accepts cash, which I find strange considering that it's in a college town. read more

China Moon is the only Asian restaurant in town. Its main focus is its buffet, though they do have a full menu to order from. The restaurant's outside and inside can be a little off-putting to those not familiar with it. The front window is filled with stuffed animals and the interior is decked out with a variety of wall hangings and instrumental Chinese covers of American songs(like Yankee Doodle and Beatles' songs). Cleanliness isn't really great. Tables can be sticky at times and I advise you avoid the restrooms. As for the service, you pay at the front and then fill your own cup and dish your own food at the buffet. No need for a tip. The buffet has around 15 to 20 different items, most packed with sodium and many deep fried. There is also a salad bar with vegetables, fruit, and deserts. In general, the food is served in quantity and not quality. It is good if you're looking at filling your face and not dissecting the flavors of each bite. Think Asian spots in food courts or HyVee Chinese buffet. They are usually good about getting more food out if something runs out. If you eat enough you'll leave with the feeling of a brick in your stomach and with the ambition of doing nothing for a while afterwards. I would strongly recommend eating here around busy times(noon and 6pm) as food can sit in the buffet for a very long time if no one is eating it. Another important note is that they DO NOT ACCEPT debit or credit cards, which is certainly a pain. China Moon has been described as being only like-able to Madison residents, though I recommend you check it out before dismissing it. If you're looking for a good buffet in town or are craving Chinese food, you should stop here. read more

The Buffet is great, but the best part is their takeout. You can call and order anything on their menu and show up 10 minutes later and walk out with the best Chinese food you've ever tasted. I've ordered dozens of menu items for takeout and have never been disappointed. Their portions are huge and the price is low. A $7.35 entree will feed two people full, or one person 2-3 separate times. The house specials are less than $10 and have easily fed me for 3 separate meals on one purchase. The buffet is great, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not ordering takeout at least once. That is where the chefs really shine. read more

Considering that China moon is the only place in Madison to get Chinese food, it is pretty decent. The buffet is pretty small, but the food is really good. The buffet is less than $8.00, or slightly more if you get a pop. This restaurant only accepts cash. read more

China Moon Restaurant - My first trip to the buffet. - Chinese Near Me - Madison, South Dakota

I must have spent $1000 here in college. Looking back at my years at DSU I have very fond memories here. It probably wasn't the greatest Chinese food in the world but in my mind it was the best. I do remember the Lo Mein being particularly good. I always loaded up on pudding for dessert as well. I hope to visit again someday! read more

Excellent Chinese doughnuts and beef dishes! For a small town pretty good Chinese! Better when you order out! Much fresher!

Buffet isn't that bad and it's the only Chinese in Madison. It's Madison SD though, so if you keep that in your mind, you'll have a reasonable expectation of how it is. read more

Food is ok. Only Chinese restaurant in Madison. Absolutely crazy they don't have a card mechant system!!!! Between the amount of bad checks they probably get and the people that don't go because they don't carry cash or checkbook on them they are losing out! We don't go as much as we would because I don't feel like making a special trip to the atm or finding and dusting off my checkbook when we can just go somewhere else. read more

Best Chinese food I have had in the Dakotas, and better than some I have tried on the West Coast! The vegetarian-oriented choices are very limited but what I tried was tasty and seemed to have been all-fresh ingredients except the baby corn. My omnivore companions ate heartily. read more
