Unfortunately, our last experiences were not good. We went for lunch a few weeks ago and ordered the blackened chicken. The chicken was not "blackened " and had no flavor at all. Recently, freinds arrived from out of town and as the Pheasant is closed for dinner on Sundays, they chose Craft. Again, the service was excellent but the food was not. Our friends ordered the blackened salmon and the blackened chicken. They both arrived lacking any spice or flavor. We had assumed the unseasoned food we received at lunch a few weeks before could possibly have been a "one off". Apparently it wasn't. Craft has a great opportunity now that The Pheasant closes at 2. We hope they seize the opportunity and make the necessary changes. read more

This is by far the best meal I've had since visiting South Dakota. Visiting from Charleston, SC, where we have an abundance of Michelin & James beard chefs, I've been hard pressed to find a delicious and well cooked meal. The side salad was delicious & the balsamic vinaigrette dressing perfectly mixed. A great accompaniment to my medium rare dry aged ribeye steak and roasted vegetables. My son had the wagyu burger which I sampled :) and it was incredible. So many flavors and such a rich, beefy flavor, also perfectly cooked. My daughter had the tortellini al a Vodka sans mushrooms & onions. It had a slight truffle flavor to it, but not overbearing. Delicious mix of flavors. My cocktail was delicious, my husband's cosmopolitan was perfect & top the evening with a NY style cheesecake with chocolate syrup that was big enough to share! Whilst visiting from out of town, I was looking for a little nicer experience around Brookings and decided to give Craft a shot. Once you enter, the warm, inviting atmosphere pairs perfectly with the step-up cuisine available here. I was able to enjoy some great bacon chislic, a local favorite! The asparagus and mashed potatoes were next level good, though the lamb could've been a little less on the done side. The couple well drinks I ordered were strong and part of a happy hour special. I had the country fried chicken and garlic potatoes w mixed stir fried veggies (half of which were onions - which is great if ya want onions). Service was attentive and good. Price was reasonable. I had the lamb caprese burger and they allowed me to swap it for the beyond burger which was really nice! We also had the cookies and cream chocolate cake which was AMAZING. While the food at Craft is well-prepared and tasty for the most part, today we experienced some of the poorest service of any of our visits. We came for Sunday brunch and the restaurant was about 75% empty. We could have overlooked having to ask twice for sugar as well as our drinks remaining empty till we got up to look for a server, but the worst was that our food, which was simple breakfast items (except for a burger our son ordered) took an hour to arrive. Our son finally had to leave and get lunch across the street as he had to report early for graduation. Our server first blamed the delay on a "large party" (a group of 10 that was one of only about five parties in the whole restaurant, then later blamed it on a "new menu" the kitchen "wasn't used to." The food eventually arrived after an hour, lukewarm and with watermelon that looked like it had been frozen at one point. We received a couple of half-hearted "I'm sorrys" from the server and a comp for the burger that we sent back since our son couldn't wait an hour to eat. No manager came to our table, and there was no effort to make things right in any way. What should have been a celebratory graduation brunch was a total disappointment. I am really not sure what Craft brings to the Brookings area that other local places do not do a little better and a little cheaper. The place looks very nice but the service is spotty, the serving sizes are on the smaller side, and the prices are a bit high for the area. I have not had any bad food here, but have been told by others that they have. The few times I have eaten here the food ranged from fair to good, but I was surprised at how many empty tables were present. I did have one poor experience based on customer experience; it was enough to keep me from returning but not bad enough to drop my review down to 2 stars. Although 2.5 stars is a bit more accurate to my experience than 3 stars is. read more

This is a nicer and more classy venue in Brookings, nice for family meals or date night. Just passing through and looking for a good place eat. My bad, didn't read the other reviews - Mistake #1 The waitress brought out 2 small pieces of bread with a seasoned balsamic olive oil mixture. I ate the bread and sauce while enjoying a cold beer - Mistake #2 I ordered the Marsala mushroom ravioli. Ravioli was from the box tonite. Not fresh as advertised. Didn't know that at the time ordering. When the entree came I asked for more bread. (2 small slices 1/2" X 2" X 3/4") - Mistake #3. They charge $1 for the 2 extra pieces of bread. REALLY?? Staying another night in Brookings but won't be coming back here. Too bad. I think this place has potential but someone is gonna have to unlock it. The staff is really nice and attentive. Charging for the 2 pieces of bread is like charging for chips and salsa. It's only $1 but is it really worth it??? read more

First time in Brookings and this place was close to my nephew's apartment. We had driven through the downtown and oh how I wish we had picked one the pubs along there. We go in and my first thought was "this place is trying hard to be trendy". From the font of their logo to the use of the word "Fusion", it screamed we are cutting edge. Someone should have told it to the chef. As I mentioned, the interior was very hipster; dark work, tile, stone, a fire wall. The lights had that urban decay look. You know, the bare bulbs on exposed wires. There were booths and tables and outdoor seating if you wanted. It appeared that there was a bar on the other side of the wall. Our host was our server and she was friendly but not a great server. No specific suggestions, didn't know what they carried for whiskey and limited menu knowledge. We ordered and they did bring out three slices of bread and some balsamic vinegar. The bread was a white loaf, that was somewhat crusty. The balsamic vinegar was just that...vinegar. Normally I've been to places where it is a mix with some oil or seasonings. Nope, just vinegar. I tried it but ended up just eating the bread. Glad we didn't ask for more seeing another review mentioned being charged. I ordered the Black Garlic Burger. My sister had the Pub Steak and my nephew had the Chicken Parmesan Sandwich. I had the salad as the side and it was really well appointed with vegetables that tasted fresh. The burger was lacking. The trendy topping with the bleu cheese was ok, but the burger (overcooked from my request of medium rare) was lifeless. As for my sister's steak. She reported it was tasty. I would also note that the seasonal vegetables (zucchini and yellow squash) was very good and the pile of mashed red potatoes looked huge. My nephew wasn't a fan of his sandwich. The sauce tasted like it was canned and so he scraped it off. The drinks were pretty pricey as well, but hey, can't have a trendy meal without those trendy drinks. Service as I mentioned was hit and miss. She checked back after a minute and then we didn't see her until the dessert tray came by. OK, but nothing special on there either. Food is good but service sucks. How do you promote bottomless mimosas but after two drinks you try rushing the customer out by telling them last drink and bringing the check. And then deliberately ignoring them, waiting 20 minuets before you come back to see if they need a refill. I don't blame the restaurant I blame the waitress. Food was just OK. Nothing special with some complaints. Been hummus app was very cold and bland. Wonton chips were overcooked and nearly burned. Bartender described my beer as dark so I ordered it. It was darker than the mainstream domestics but much to my disappointment it was nowhere near a dark beer. Fiancés margarita was good, but did not taste like it had tequila in it. My fiancé and I both had pasta. I had a pesto dish with no additions and I liked that. The other dish was the black and white Alfredo with truffle oil and shrimp added for $5. The quantity disappointed with only 3 medium shrimp on the dish. The sauce was overly oily and nothing special. Pesto was good. Waitress replaced my dirty spoon promptly. Lived in Brookings for college for 5 years and never tried it. Family member wanted to have Sunday brunch there so we drove the 45 mins to it. Came in a little after 11am...not a single other person there, I was nervous then. We were seated and went for the brunch buffet. I was extremely disappointed is an understatement. The selection went from extremely dry/no sauce pasta to every bread type option stale or like rubber. The eggs were also quite awful, how do you mess that up. A lot of stuff was barely warm and I didn't even want to try stuff being that similar textured stuff was already awful (ex: pancakes, french toast, biscuits and gravy). I did enjoy the potatoes, but that was about it. When we left 3 families came in and when we left around 1pm there was only one refill on the buffet trays. I was in Brookings over the weekend and tried this newer restaurant. For the quality of food you get, the pricing was great. I tried the lobster dip and it was awesome. My entree was the pub steak and it was perfectly seasoned and was cooked to perfection. I was surprised by some of the reviews on here, because I had great food and great service. Restaurants tend to misfire some during their openings, but I think Craft must be firing on all cylinders now because we really loved the place. read more
