Our reservation was at…read more5pm and boy am I glad we had reservations two hours before the concert because this place was not ready for the crowd they were about to receive. I did appreciate that we were seated right away (reservations took priority over walk ins) but it took about 10 minutes before we were handed waters and menus. It then took 30 minutes before we received our appetizer to which we were then told the rest of our food was done at the same time. Typically, I don't prefer to eat my appetizer at the same time as my entree, but in this case I worried with how slow of service we were receiving I wouldn't see my entree for another hour. Almost all of our food was amazing. I ordered a house salad and the Fillet of Beef with mashed potatoes. My boyfriend ordered the chicken and wild rice soup and the prime rib. He said the prime rib wasn't anything to write home about but it did the job. Overall, service was slow but everyone was super nice. I think they just need to hire a few more people which I know is difficult to do. I really hope this place can find the help they need because the food is so good and I want to see this place continue to succeed.

It was tucked quietly into a residential part of town near the local athletic fields and open farmland that stretch out with that classic small-town South Dakota feeling. You wouldn't necessarily expect one of the state's better steak experiences to be sitting there so modestly among homes and fields. But somehow, that made it feel even more authentic. The service was always warm, friendly, and deeply local in the best possible way. You never felt rushed or treated like just another table. It had that comfortable small-town hospitality where people genuinely seemed happy you came. And the steaks? Consistently very good. Were they the greatest steaks we've ever had in our lives? No. But they were reliably well-prepared, flavorful, satisfying, and honestly far better than many of the larger steak chains around Sioux Falls. The kitchen understood proper preparation and seasoning without overcomplicating things. There is a reason this place developed such a strong reputation over the years. The restaurant earned statewide recognition and frequently appeared in discussions of South Dakota's best steakhouses, drawing people from well beyond Flandreau itself. Including us. We happily made the drive many times because we knew we were likely going to leave happy. I truly hope someone eventually reopens the place and preserves what made it special. Small-town restaurants with genuine character, loyal followings, and heartfelt hospitality are becoming harder and harder to find.

My buddy told me that a mutual acquaintance had been scouring the area within a half hour to find the best hamburger. "Interesting," I said, "what did he find?" "Well," my buddy replied, "he has it narrowed down to two places. The first is the Lucky Dog in Volga." "That's where we had lunch," I said. "The other is Lemke's in Aurora," he replied. "And that's where we had dinner." (My parents have been retired for years and share the passion for a great burger. This was their go to spot as well. Make no mistake. The cover does not match the book here.) The Lucky Dog is relatively small. It is a bar and grill. The dining/ bar area is is functional, adorned with the typical football schedules and happy hour announcements, but I wouldn't say cluttered. Everything appeared to be clean and well-maintained. Service was cheery and brisk. I ordered a Cowboy burger, mi esposa ordered the (basic) hamburger, add cheese. There are a couple of reasons I'm giving this place a five star review. The first one is that, other than this place being located in Aurora, I couldn't find anything wrong with it all. Clean restrooms, comfy seats, decent beer selection, kitchen looked clean. And the only reason I dislike it being in Aurora is that I can't get the delicious burgers they sell here more often. I suspect that the beef in the sandwich was either hand ground or at least very high quality and hand cut from a roll of beef (if you know, you know). I would guess it was a little over a 1/3 lb patty, but as it was cooked immaculately to a touch under medium and lost zero moisture to the flat-top, hard to say. The bun was tidy and perfectly performed its function of allowing me to hold the sandwich without making a mess. It was fresh and pillowy. The onion ring was crispy and delicious. The barbeque sauce rich and intoxicating. To an extent, there was a factor of more is less. The sandwich was neither too big nor too small. Just tidy, efficient and a bulls-eye shot to my happy place. You don't have to rewrite culinary history when you make a menu item. You need to honor its ingredients, and this sandwich absolutely did just that. Thank you so, so much Lucky Dog.
