We chose this restaurant on a recommendation of a friend who studied at SDSU a few years ago. There is no way this is the same restaurant that my friend experienced. Decent flavor on the meat and you control your amount of sauce with bottles on the table. Their pickles paired perfectly (not out of the jar pickles either). This is for the Brookings location. It's not the best BBQ I've ever had. It's probably the worst. But BBQ is like pizza, even when it's bad, it's good. Or it's at least ok and satisfies the craving. This is the fastest and easiest place in town for BBQ so I accept that it's not great. However, the customer service has gone downhill. The older couple who run the joint are not friendly at all. Backyard Grill is a totally unexpected surprise that is definitely worth stopping by to try when you are in the Brookings area. Being from the south, I have eaten a lot of different types of BBQ. This one is the real deal and is as good or better than many of the places featured on Food Network or the Travel Channel. Brisket is very, very good. The pulled pork is good solid chunks of BBQ. A lot of places will try to cover up pork BBQ with sauce. No amount of sauce will make bad BBQ taste good. Backyard Grill does not add any sauce to their BBQ pork. It doesn't need it. However, they do have several different sauces for you to add as little as or as much as you want. As a word of warning, if you add too much sauce you cover up the smoke flavor that they have been working on for several hours during the cooking process. Good size portions on meat and sides. The corn bread is even better than my Aunt Sally's and that is saying a lot! The staff is ultra-friendly. I really like that the cooker is outside so you can catch whiff of the meats cooking as you pass by or if you are eating outside. I am looking forward to a return trip to Brookings and trying the ribs- although the brisket and pork is so good I might have get them instead. The one thing I would like for them to offer is sliced brisket. They chop their brisket. read more

Backyard Grill has to be the best BBQ you will be able to dig your grubby little fingers into outside of the ambiguous region known as "The South." The pit master Al is always adding new items to his menu and adjusting his business according to the tastes of his customers; a fantastic businessman. I have been getting BBQ from Al since he ran his business out of a small shack on the northeast side of town and I will be sure to continue to get my BBQ fix at The Backyard Grill whenever I am in town from now on! Good solid barbecue. Had the brisket sides of beans and cheesy hash-browns. All very good. Meat juicy and flavorful. Their beans were excellent, nicely spicy. Hands down best of their sauces to go with brisket is the bourbon sauce. Partner had brisket also, but with coleslaw and cornbread. Cornbread ok, but not the dense corny goodness you get in the south. Coleslaw really good, creamy with just enough vinegar to make a great pairing with barbecue. Bad: The BBQ pork sandwich was dry and the overall sauces weren't great, in my opinion. While I know the meats are usually prepared well in advance at BBQ places, I was a bit disappointed to see that they kept all the meats behind the counter, not in a large smoker or anything. Subsequently, I think this dried some of the meats out (I could be off on that). Overall, this place has reasonable prices and is worth checking out if you are looking for a quick meal. I have had two events catered by the BYGrill and the food was excellent, there was some service related confusion the first time but not the second. I also carry out from time to time. Their (old) tiny Brookings location does not work well with a big family to dine in but I am told they are moving to the former Mixed location, a smart move if its true. I love their beef brisket, beans and cornbread. Their sauces are good and I find mixing them gives me the best flavor. While I have not had their wings, friends rave about them. In a community thoroughly fixated on pizza and subs, the BYGrill gives Brookings a much need alternative. (Updated to to give one more star for their new and improved location!) read more

This is for the Sioux Falls location. The website's yelp button is for both Brookings and SF at this time. Only 3 stars, but I'm going to give them another shot because I think the food will be worth it. My husband & I ordered at the same time. He got the beef brisket w/ sweet potato fries, and I got the smoked chicken w/mac & cheese and baked beans. Glad I told him to go ahead with his meal instead of waiting on mine because THREE orders (with time in between) came up before I got my food. So, I was expecting, at least, for it to be hot. Not even. He later told me that his brisket was cold as well. The sweet potato fries are fantastic, as is the portion. The buns are so soft, but don't get soggy. YUM. My sides were good, too, but nothing extraordinary worth mentioning. I think once they work the kinks out and the staff has some more experience, they'll get it right. If they could get our orders out at approximately the same time instead of over a 5 minute lapse and served hot, they'll receive the quickest 5 stars from me. Right now, the sign they have is the one at the street. They share the building with the casino, but no signage is visible on the building for the bbq place. This eatery will disappear among all the other restaurant choices of SF, especially if it can't easily be found. Not like I know BBQ being from SoCal, but this place has the foundation to be great.
