We went to 1481 Grille because it was a good location to meet family members and were treated to an excellent meal. Two of us had different burgers (Roadhouse and Santa Fe)--both were done exactly as we ordered and very flavorful. Others in our group had the country-fried steak and the Wisco sandwich--very good! We finished the meal with the Badger Buns which were just a little unique and delicious. Service was excellent--Friendly, helpful and efficient. Great place! read more

Fantastic service. It's obvious that the staff operates as a team with a high level of customer focus. Food was amazing. We had the chopped steak with baked potato and salad and the whatever the steak chislic dinner with macaroni and cheese and salad. All excellent and cook correctly! For sure be back next time we're up fishing in the area. read more

My review of the fish and chips dinner only... Ask the waiter what kind of fish is the fish and chips dinner made with and you will be told it is called Pangasianodon. Most people have never heard of this fish so they, a long with me, may be curious and go ahead and spend $17 to try it. When I got home I looked up this fish and the he common name in the US is Swai. With a bit of research you will discover that swai fish is nothing like cod or halibut which make a wonderful fried fish meals. Swai is a Vietnamese native and is a omnivorous bottom feeding fish similar to the catfish though in a different family. In other words it's cheap. Even with today's prices you can still buy a 4 lb bag for $15 or less retail so they probably pay less to purchase it for the restaurant. Needless to say I was quite underwhelmed with my "whitefish" dinner after my first bite. I was served four thin fillets of some unidentifiable fish meat. It was properly cooked for what it was and the batter used produced a tasty breading but it was not what I expected. It was not thick, moist, flaky or flavorful. All I could taste was the breading. I'm guessing the waiters have no idea of what they are selling and simply parrot what they have been told to say. Please think twice before ordering if you want a nice piece of fried fish! This is what you find when you are in a small town and the 11 year old is in charge of finding dinner on Yelp. This was a fantastic find! A quick distance from De Smet (didn't realize everything closed on Sundays either all day or early, except the Dairy Queen). The food was really good. I highly recommend the tater tot appetizer. Salads were actual romaine and not just iceberg. Burgers were good too. read more

Arlington, SD is a small town, but 1481 Grille doesn't feel small town. It's definitely a place loved by the locals. When in a small town we go to where the locals hang out. Good cocktails and good food. Not a fancy place, but there's a lot to choose from on the menu, including daily specials. If you have to wait for a table, hang out in the bar.. the locals are friendly and talkative. read more

If you live in the Brookings/Watertown area, the odds are you already know about 1481 Grille and what the locals say about it; and you have probably eaten here several times and won't be looking at a Yelp review to help decide if you want to go here or not. However, if you find yourself traversing South Dakota on HWY 14 and thinking "What the heck is there to eat around here? Oh I know, let me consult Yelp !", then "Yes" this a place you will want to consider. So if my calculations are correct, that means this will actually apply to about 3.76 people over the next 18 months. Everything I have tried has been good. The staff is friendly and it is usually busy. The steaks are nicely seasoned and prepared and they have some of the best Chicken Fried Steak that I have ever eaten.....oh, ....uh....sorry, Mom. It is a breaded and fried Angus beef steak, smothered in homestyle gravy served with a large portion of mashed potatoes. The Trail Meatloaf is also a winner. It is a mixture of lamb and bison with seasonings and topped with a honey colored BBQ sauce. There is free popcorn and the appetizers I have tried have all been worthy of reorders. The steak meat quality is very good, but they tend to be on the pricey side. Prime Rib is probably their best entree, but it is only served on Wed/Fri/Sat. Every town has that one restaurant that changes its ownership and name every couple of years. The 1481 Grille fills that niche in Arlington. Re-opened in 2007, the Grille appears to have at least shaken the two year curse that plagued its predecessors going back to 1989. I visited on a Saturday night while making an overnight stay in the bargain Arlington Inn next door. I sat at the bar and found the service to be attentive, though not particularly friendly. The menu includes standard bar fare, hot wings and burgers. It also featured some seafood and steaks. For dinner I enjoyed a Bourbon melt burger that was thick and tasty. A few reasonably priced Boulevard wheat ales provided a relaxing end to a long day's drive. While drinking my Boulevards I enjoyed the atmosphere. I noted with amusement that the older lady next to me had placed a martini olive in her Hamm's beer -- a touch of tres sophistique. Down the bar, a man was draining Busch Light bottle and lamenting the DUI he got in his driveway. ("It was a setup.") Another, couple of men were trying to drunk negotiate the purchase of a horse saddle. They were unable to come to an agreement by the time I stumbled back to my hotel room. Diminutive Arlington doesn't have too much to offer the traveler by way of variety, but you cannot go wrong with the 1481 Grille. read more

Our appetizers never came and when we asked about them they said they would be right out. What we never realized that the servers right out meant right out after our food was given to us. I told the server that we no longer wanted the appetizers but he said they were already being prepared and brought them anyway. Food was OK but was never asked if I wanted another beverage. I was a little upset when he said he would discount our appetizers and took a whopping 50 cents off. The appetizers where not ate and we took them home in a box and since they were chips they will probably just get thrown away. Not sure we will hurry back. read more

This was a great find for our family. Very friendly staff from greeters to server and beyond. The food was great and reasonably priced. They have a kids menu with a pretty good selection. That was a plus for sure. The popcorn was a plus as well while we waited for our food. Overall a great dinner while we visited SD. read more

Good food, free popcorn, extremely friendly service. We were looking for a restaurant that served vegetables and were on our way into Brookings from De Smet. This was the first place on highway 14 (which is briefly both 14 & highway 81, hence the name). My husband said that his Tuesday steak special (8 oz. plus salad and vegetables) for $9.95 was fantastic, perfectly cooked. I had a yummy soup and salad, with several different veggies in there. Now, in all honesty, the veg that appeared on the plate was probably frozen, but it was fine and much healthier than the iceberg lettuce salads we have been eating. To sum up, this is a good restaurant in an unexpected location and well worth the trip down the road if you want more than DQ in this corner of the US. read more

Best prime rib I have ever had!! Friendly, good service. My only complaint is the high prices.

I really enjoyed the unique cuisine at this diner. Don't let the plain diner-style presentation throw you off of the great food. I had dinner with a group of 16 and every plate got cleaned. The food is an interesting blend of Cajun and Plains dishes. The blackened chicken salad was a hit with my dinner companions. I had the meatloaf made with lamb and bison with a layer of Parmesan cheese on top. It was a great twist on one of my favorite dishes. And I can't forget the beignet-style dinner rolls. I don't love the atmosphere but for a small town restaurant this place is pretty decent. They have good steaks and mostly everything I've eaten here has been good! I would definitely keep coming back to support a place like this. read more
