Atmosphere is dated but I ignored that red flag. The staff are very friendly and attentive. However the devil is in the details. 1. The plastic cup was questionably cleaned 2. The wonton soup was so bland, cup of noodle soups had more flavor 3. The "fried rice" seemed steamed or heavily drenched in oil that my "rear end" started to pucker in fear of bubble guts 4. Today we felt like having Chinese food! So we came to shepherdstown to Christmas shop and have lunch. As we walked in, the lights were off, but they turned lights on once we were seated. Me and my children ordered Orange chicken, Crunchy chicken with walnuts, the children's special, and sweet and sour chicken. We were first served wonton soup, which tasted like plain oil. Once we got our food, the Orange chicken was sour, and the sauce was very sweet. The sweet and sour chicken though was good, and the Crunchy chicken was good too. Water began to drip from the ceiling, and the waitress did nothing to stop it, just watch anime. Once we finished eating, I went to pay. The prices on the menu were somewhat cheap, but the waitress rose the prices by 10 dollars! Also, did I add that we say some sort of drugs/medicine on one of the tables and nobody else was there? I don't understand the bad reviews of China Kitchen. What did you expect? Some fine dining? Get over yourself. This is the same Chinese restaurant all of us who grew up in small towns experiences. The setting is dated, way too bright, and lacking the omnipresent Chinese tapestries and calendars. It's sterile. The service was quick (though, admittedly, my friend and I were the only ones there). The friend dumplings were great, the General Tso's decent, and the beef and broccoli very good (tender meat cooked just right). Expect a MSG high because the food is soaked in it and corn starch. Anything better would have disappointed me. They don't have a liquor license to my friend and I poured a Tsing Ha into our water bottles. The weird thing was that the seven staff sat at a big table and stared at us throughout dinner. We're respectable guys so maybe it was just impatience so that they could close up. China Kitchen is not your best bet. But it doesn't pretend to be anything but what it is. That's refreshing. read more

I understand we are in a pandemic. I realize that places may not be as busy as before. So my rating is solely based on the quality of the food, leaving all personal feelings aside. Steamed Meat Dumplings- Not appetizing at all. Usually I find a great chinese restaurant will take great pride in the dumplings they make/serve. The filling was bland and greasy. The dumpling sauce was just pure soy sauce with some minced garlic. Steamed rice- Did not taste fresh at all. A little on the dry side General Tso chicken- The best of the meal. It was just okay. The chicken was tough, sauce had decent flavor. I understand this is a dish made for western tastes. The side of broccoli was cooked just right. Wonton soup- Bland, green onions appeared to have simmered in the broth for hours. The wonton dumpling itself was overcooked and no filling inside. This is our go-to Chinese food. The General Tso's chicken is the best I've had. They are masterful with the steamed broccoli on the side of the dish. The chicken is good quality instead of the garbage sinewy stuff you tend to get elsewhere. And it has a crispy breading coated in a very flavorful sauce. So far, I've tried their lemon chicken ( breaded with a tangy and bright flavor), General Tso's chicken (the winner), orange chicken (wannabe General Tso's), and today I tried the Dried Ginger Mango Chicken. I've enjoyed them all. The ginger mango chicken is like a sweet and sour chicken with cooked carrot, snap peas, and mushrooms. But instead of breaded chicken, it is thin slices of tender white meat. It had what tastes like big chunks of cooked apple in it, but I'm guessing that was mango. Usually I eat my mangoes fresh, so it was new to me. I would get this again. Always always always get the eggroll! They come piping hot and fresh with a great crispy wrapper. They are delicious, but beware the heat. You really need to cut them open so they can cool first. I also highly recommend the hot and sour soup. It is spicy, full of tofu and strips of mushroom and bamboo. Bring a tissue, because your nose will start running. Worth it. I'd imagine that getting it for takeout when you have a head cold would be positively medicinal. I really wish we were closer, so I could eat here more often. They bring you this big metal pot of strong tea, ice water, and a bowl of those crunchy won-ton strips with your menus. The staff is quietly attentive. It's a family-run establishment. The food is quick, fresh and of good quality. I particularly enjoy this restaurant on a brisk day when I've been wandering around Shepherdstown and need to warm up. It's comfort food basically. Pretty good! I would recommend it I had the China Kitchen Lo Mein and I was pretty impressed. We live in Harper's Ferry just moved to WV and so far this has been the best in all this area. Let me start by saying that the hostess was very friendly and attentive. We were greeted and seated quickly and had water and menus in short order. The meal itself... Miso Soup= Watery, tasteless and served with stale fried noodles. We intended to order Sushi but were told that they were not serving it any longer-- apparently, it had been off the menu for a month though the menu still featured it. We ended up ordering Chinese-- my GF had "Shrimp and Scallops with Vegetables in special Sauce"....she said it wasn't bad but rather bland. I had General Tso's Chicken. Just a quaint local Chinese food restaurant. Not terribly busy on the night I dined which in some ways was a good thing after a long day. I was the only one seated in the restaurant. Other patrons (about 4) showed up for dining about 45 minutes into my meal. One person came in from outside for takeout pickup. Service was friendly. My meal was OK. Nothing terrible but nothing out of this planet. Just your standard Chinese fare. This restaurant was one of the very few open after 6 pm so I was grateful for that as I was in town only for a few hours waiting for a graduation ceremony to end at the university. I ordered Chicken with Cashew Nuts. It was just OK. The plate of chicken, I have to say, was **huge** compared to the very tiny little bowl of rice accompanying it. There was also sushi on the menu (which I was really excited about even though I found it odd on a chinese menu) but we were told upon being seated that there was no sushi that night. Bummer. We ordered egg drop soup, lettuce wraps, shrimp & snow peas, and beef & broccoli. When the waitress brough our tea and water she also brought a bowl of friend wontons. Weird. The chowmein tasted like bean sprouts and canned shrimp in a nasty think, brownish,soy sauce heavy sauce. There was no cabbage or onions or anything you would usually find in chowmein. We've lived in Shepherdstown for 5 years and have dined here about 4 times. We keep trying it once every year or two to see if the quality or taste has improved, but each time we don't find anything worth coming back for. This latest visit, we tried a wide range of items to see if anything was appealing enough to come back for. After our family of 4 had sampled Barbequed Spare Ribs, Won Ton Soup, Lettuce Curls, Steamed Dumplings, Seaweed Salad, Shrimp and Scallops with Vegetables, and plain Edamame, we came up with nearly nothing worth coming back for. Our son liked the spare ribs, and our daughter's favorite was the edamame. My husband's shrimp was rubbery and the overall shrimp and scallop dish was in a sauce that was somehow both bland and overly strong with salt and garlic, (and all-around unappetizing). We were ready to chalk the dinner up to another learning experience at worse, until our son began the vomiting. Our best guess was that the seaweed salad was old and bad, since that's the only dish our son had to the near exclusion of the rest of us (I had a small bite or two but my tummy was fine). Once our son finished vomiting up all the seaweed salad, about 24 hours later, he began to recover. We moved here from San Francisco, so maybe our standards for Chinese food are unrealistically high for West Virginia, but I'd like to not believe that. I would have loved to have found a place for some good Dim Sum, but I had already drastically lowered my standards to simply hoping for a place to get the idea of good Chinese food. We paid only because we ate two bites before we feared for our health and decided to walk. We learned from the locals that they've heard similar complaints and known people to have become ill from the food and so, upon suggestion, we went back and had our money refunded. This was a nice find. We had gone to Shepherdstown to eat at the Thai restaurant across the street, but they were closed for a private party. I wasn't really into Chinese but we went here anyway. I was pleasantly surprised that their menu has a extensive choice of Chinese and sushi items. My kids shared sweet and sour shrimp which was very good and not done the typical fried in batter way. My wife and I had the sushi lunch specials that are served 11am until 4pm. They were an excellent value and very good sushi. The dining area is very pleasant. The chicken was prepared well and the sauce was more complex than I'm used to getting in this area; just the right amount of garlic with scallion and hot pepper with neither ingredient overpowering the other.
