Service is very good and the food is always very good and presented well. It's one of the better Chinese restaurants in the area.

So...we did take-out on a visit and our hotel was across the street. Our expectations were non-existent but the hot and sour soup and the king pao were actually delicious! The mature woman who runs it is charming as she tries to manage all the take out orders, but she is a complete (delightful) liar about how long it's going to take: she says 15 minutes but it's 30 minutes So, just be prepared for the long wait and her charming self lying to your face. Your takeout will take 30 minutes. The cook isn't an Asian person but a bearded white college dude (isn't he supposed to wear a hat or a beard covering for food prep laws?). That's neither here nor there but just is. I can only attest to hot and sour soup and king pao. read more

Always disappointing! $14 for rice and a lot of bland veggies with a few pieces of chicken (see pic to see chicken vs veggies). I was really looking forward to chicken chow mein...I don't know what this is but it's not chow mein and it's definitely not good. Beware- when ordering online it automatically defaults to a 20% tip. i ended up accidentally tipping $10 on a pickup order.

UPDATE: Didn't want to make dinner, and totally forgot this place was only 10 minutes away. Had to bump it up to a 5 star because this is easily the best Chinese food I've found within 50 miles since moving to the area. First off, the egg roll blows the spring rolls out of the water, especially topped with their awesome house mustard (infinitely better than the little packets) We also got the A Wok Platter, and WOW was this good. Every single item in it was a hit. The dumplings were fantastic, and the hot and sour soup was delightful. Definitely going to be visiting more often read more

Until very recently this was a halfway decent place. I don't know what's changed, but it's gone downhill. The last two times I had carry out from here the food had a very burnt taste. The woman that works the front counter in the evenings now seems genuinely displeased that customers occasionally arrive to interrupt whatever it is she'd rather be doing. She's also very difficult to understand, which is okay, but she expresses a high level of irritation if you have trouble understanding her and ask her to repeat herself, which is a lot less okay. It's unfortunate. We used to order here pretty often, but I don't see that continuing. read more

So we are from South East Pennsylvania and we were visiting family. To be honest I wasn't expecting quality Chinese food from a small town in WV. I know I know I'm being pretentious. I have eaten Chinese food all over and this place by far had the best I've ever had (sorry my local guy). We got a ton of food for about 15 people and it was done in 20 minutes. We also had enough to feed everyone the next day. Just about everything was top notch. My go to dish of chicken w/ cashews was great enough for me to contemplate a 3 hour road trip to enjoy again. We dined in, and had a very nice experience. The restaurant is clean, and our server was very nice. The fried items we ordered (egg rolls and crab Rangoon) were crispy and NOT oily... a big victory as I've had so many bad experiences with such items over the years. They know how to fry correctly! the Kung Po tofu and tofu family style were both excellent. They were very generous with the protein and it was cooked perfectly. Rice was great as was the hot tea. My only minor complaint is the ratio of protein to vegetables. The dishes could've been even greater had there been more of the yummy veggies! read more

So we recently went to eat here. Wonton soup was very good. Sesame chicken was good but somewhat dry. Restaurant was empty on a Friday night. Waiter was nice. Felt like we were eating in somebody's living room. At the end we wanted to pay, but the waiter was watching videos on his phone, so we had to wait. While we were waiting, a homeless man came in and sat down. It was very off putting. He appeared to be a regular there and acted strangely. I used to like Awok. I mean, let's be honest, the Asian cuisine in Shepherdstown definitely leaves something to be desired. Awok is the most decent Chinese food around. They lost a customer in me tonight though. I placed an order over the phone. I had a menu in front of me and referred to the order by the number (but also stated what I wanted). Guy taking my order repeated something back to me, it sounded like what I'd ordered (but I misheard). Note to anyone ordering takeout from Awok: NEVER EVER MISHEAR YOUR ORDER OVER THE PHONE!!! HOW DARE YOU!! When I went to pick up my order the guy who brought out my food and was to ring me up (waiter, owner, I don't care- he was freakin' rude) repeated the food back to me but it wasn't what I ordered. I said "Oh, no, I ordered the F12" and he acted like I said I'd killed his puppy. Instead of just accepting that we'd had a miscommunication over the phone, he kept saying "DIDN'T YOU HEAR WHAT I SAID ON THE PHONE??" and I was like "Sorry, I guess I misheard you but I also stated what I want by menu number" to which he couldn't really wrap his head around. I mean, what are the numbers there for then?? To make a long story short, when I asked if he could correct my order, he just gave me an incredible attitude. So ultimately I said "Nevermind!! You aren't being very nice about this and I don't even want the food anymore." Seriously, this was handled so poorly. I made a follow up call and told him that if he treated other customers like he'd just treated me, he wasn't going to keep them for very long. Which is incredibly awesome because if you're a student you are also more than likely broke and have no time to make your own food. Stop here while riding the C&O canal to DC. The food it good, but the owner is very funny. He is like the Chinese food Nazi. We asked him what was in mu shu gai pan and he said, "Yooou tell me." Well worth the stop for the entertainment value. read more

We just moved to Shepherdstown recently and have been to AWOK twice as it is within 3 minutes from our house. Both times we were the only customers that were dining in. The owner/manager/waiter goes by the name, Dee. He seems a little bit depressed as you might expect a business owner to be these days. He does try to be upbeat though you can tell he is hurting. On both occasions we found the food to be far less than desirable. And we are not talking about anything exotic here. General Tso sans broccoli and Triple Delight on the first visit were both disappointing. Sweet and Sour Pork way overcooked on the second visit was the last straw. Not just the outer coating but also the pork itself was so crisp that it shattered into crumbs when stabbed with a fork. Even the sauce was so loose that it lay like a a pool in the plate and would not adhere to the pork "rocks". I am not one to easily complain but this was really terrible. Dee's reaction to my complaint was to offer to try again. I expressed disinterest so he just brought me a full priced check. I paid and left but I will never eat at AWOK again. read more

This restaurant is close to my house, only about 10 minutes away, but I definitely have had better Chinese food than what is served here. It's EXTREMELY overpriced, for one, I think everytime we eat here, we end up paying about $40 for two people. I could get better food at a chain restaurant in Hagerstown for that price. They have lunch specials you can get, plus a little buffet, but like I said, I've had better. Not my first choice for Chinese. read more

The prices are pretty high for my tastes, but the buffet lunch is a pretty good deal at only $6.50. It is a very small buffet, but if you are in a hurry and want a cheap lunch it's pretty nice to have in the town. If you are looking for a larger buffet, make the trip to Martinsburg and hit the one by Big Lots. After lunch time is over all the prices go up to around 10-15 dollars a plate. I really like the garlic beef, but am not usually looking to pay that kind of a price for it. I wish they would offer lunch portions all day long. However, with the dinner portion you will likely have enough leftovers for another meal later. Their hot tea is a jasmine infused green tea and I love it. I am obsessed with Awok!! We come here all the time! I love the honey chicken, it is the best I have ever had, and trust me I have had lots! It is so so wonderful and I love the staff :) The buffet is my favorite because it is so inexpensive and I love all the foods offered! We stumbled into A-Wok after getting lost finding our way back to Sharpsburg after going to the Hagerstown Outlet Mall, so we decided to dine at A-Wok. To our surprise, this was an '80's style Chinese restaurant. It is so hard to find these types of restaurants now-a-days because the buffet style restaurants keep popping up everywhere. They still have the old-school menu items -- such as Mushu Pork, Mu Gu Gai Pan, and Cashew Chicken. Everything came out very fresh, and was very delicious. The owner was pretty awesome too! First of all, if you've never been to Shepherdstown before and you get chinese food, you are an idiot. I live here and China Kitchen is the worst American Chinese food. I try eating there once a year thinking it's going to get better and it never does. They only get business because they're are on German Street. Not a terrible place, pretty mediocre Chinese food. It's cheap, so of course like most college students around here I eat it occasionally. Me and my friends always joke and say it should be called the "diarrhea dragon". The inside has more seating than expected and the lunch buffet is very cheap for students. Every time we eat inside it's super awkward....there is literally no one inside, but it makes for a quite dining experience. The dinner options are great. The wait staff is nice. I take away a star for the lunch special. It is a slightly smaller portion, with some extra things for free. It comes with one of three soups, fried rice, an egg roll, and fried chicken (Asian style). The fried chicken and the egg roll are not that great, and, the fried rice is taken off if you order Lo Mein or any other type of noodle. It did not mention that on the menu. So I recommend you stay away from the lunch special, stick with the dinner option, even if you are eating lunch there read more

The phone was off the hook so I went in to order take out and the hostess tried to discourage me and kept saying it would be "at least" 20 minutes. Despite my better judgement I still ordered.
