On a recent trip through North Carolina, we stopped for the night in Rocky Mount and decided we wanted to order Chinese. China King was about a 20-minute drive from our hotel, but we figured it would be okay because everyone was tired of pizza and fries.
The first thing to know about this place is that it has no dine-in seating. It is a take-out restaurant only. We didn't realize this and were disappointed when we got there and realized we would have to wait for our food and then drive 20 minutes back to our hotel to eat it. Not the restaurant's fault, but something you should know.
The food took over twice as long to make as we were told by the manager (he said about 10 minutes; we ended up waiting 25 - with kids waiting in the car). But finally he handed us our two giant sacks of take-out, and we headed back to our hotel.
Now - what happened next is at least partially our own fault for not thoroughly checking the bags while we were still at the restaurant. But when we got back to our motel, we found that two of our orders had been forgotten. We ordered beef with broccoli, chicken with garlic sauce, Szechwan chicken, shrimp fried rice, and mushu pork, with five orders of white rice. The shrimp fried rice and Szechwan chicken were missing from the bag.
We called the restaurant - I hoped that they would have someone available to deliver the missing items to us, but at the very least I assumed they would refund us the money for the missing items on our credit card bill. They recognized us instantly when we called, apologized, and said they had our missing food waiting for us if we wanted to come pick it up. I told them that we were 20 minutes away (it was already 9:45 pm at this point) and asked for either delivery or a refund. I was told that neither was an option.
I'm giving this place two stars because the food was decent (not great, though) and I feel that again, this was partially our fault for not checking our bags before leaving (although the bags were stuffed full of food, and this would have meant unpacking everything onto the counter) but I was really disappointed in the service and feel that the restaurant should have at least refunded our money for the food they failed to give us. Sadly, can't recommend this place. If you do go there, be prepared to eat at home and definitely check your order before leaving. read more
