Best Chinese restaurant in the Triangle! Always short wait times and friendly service

Having lived in Johnston county for over 20 yrs. This is the best place I've found in the area for Chinese food. Coming from New England, I've had a lot of great Chinese food to compare it to. I'm not saying that it's the same as New England but it's decent enough for me to keep going back for more! If anyone knows a place that's as good as or better than China King I would love to hear about it! The lo mein is pretty good, I recommend it along with the beef & broccoli for starters. Not good. We decided to give this place a try for lunch and ordered the curry chicken and string beans with beef lunch combos, along with a couple of egg rolls. After ordering online, we arrived 20 minutes later as specified for our food. Apparently our order was lost, even though we had a confirmation email showing we placed it. The employee working the front of the restaurant took our order again, in between fiddling with two cordless phones. No apology for their mistake or making us wait longer. Our lunch combos, though freshly prepared, weren't good. The vegetables in my very bland curry chicken had not been sufficiently cooked, and it might have had two ounces of chicken. My partner's beef with string bean also had a very skimpy portion of beef and she noted the string beans were clearly frozen. The high point of the meal, if you can call it that, were the egg rolls. They were served warm and not greasy, although a bit bland. I give China King credit for offering the lunch combos for $6.25, but honestly I would have preferred to pay another dollar or two and get a higher-quality meal. We won't be back. read more

My husband and I just placed an order with China king. I have to say wow! We finally found a Chinese place where the food was fresh and delicious. We are from New York and we know what good Chinese food tastes like. This is it! We ordered shrimp with broccoli, roast pork with string beans and house special fried rice. Every meal was delicious. I took a chance stopping in here by myself last night, in the mood for dining out but nobody to go with. The Take Out Counter was like most others with the large white paper menus but surprisingly some different items that I've never noticed before on other menus. The lit up board with food pictures up above the counter also reassured me that the dishes looked a bit more unique than than most Take Out Chinese places. I was getting more interested!! I was glad to see, off to the side of the To Go area, a dimly lit, fancy-looking dining room with nice leather bound menus stacked near the door. I poked my head in... nobody else was there. The To Go area stayed very busy, but the dining room was quiet. Nice decorations and lighting. Heck, Table For One Please!! There was a flat screen TV on the wall where i could watch Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune (on Mute) while I sat by myself at my table, if the Yelp Mobile App couldn't keep me company. And the wait wasn't long; a nice young man came along and answered my questions, brought me hot tea and crispy noodles to snack on, and gave me some time to look over the menu. In addition to standard Chinese fare they have Cantonese, Szechuan, and Hunan dishes. I got the Chow Mai Fun which i don't think I've seen before on other menus. It was DELICIOUS! The shrimp, pork, and beef was tasty and fresh, and the Veggies were bright and had just a bit of crispness. Everything was combined in very good size portion of Rice Noodles and just the right amount of sauce, and didn't need any seasoning at all. A couple came in and were seated at the booth next to me for a nice dinner together and their portions looked huge! Looked like they knew the menu and had been here before. The decor was dark woods, large framed pictures, and fabric & leather-like booths with deep wood tables so it was very cozy and warm. I love the 3-D type of Asian framed artwork, and also the large picture with embedded lights that made the image look like it moved and glittered. Great Stuff! Combine that with the soft-rock Asian hits that softly played, and this is definitely a place to enjoy a nice pleasant dinner. Very reasonably priced too. My wife and I have eaten here twice. The first time I went and took it home, the second time we had it delivered to the house. The food is better than expected (for example, the wontons have Chinese sausage in them, not the typical plain ground pork). The portions are large, the prices low. My real only gripe is with the delivery. The driver pulled into the driveway in a van, a kid (pre-teen) got out of the passenger side and brought the food to me where I signed the credit card bill. When he got back in, instead of the van backing out of my driveway, the van backed up INTO MY YARD, turned around (doing a 3-point turn in my yard), and drove out head-first from my driveway. Good food, the best Chinese food on 40/42. The service is slow dining in but we usually order take out.

Traveling for work and was looking for a quick bite while on-the-go. This place had almost 4 stars on Yelp, so thought I'd give it a try. Very impressed with the quality of the sweet & sour chicken. My usual Chinese place in Charlotte uses a double coating of breading on the chicken pieces. Not China King! Even the smallest of pieces (which I thought would be only fried breading like my usual place) had a juicy piece of chicken in them!! The sweet & sour sauce was also great. I've had some at other places that has been thick like syrup or too thin, like water. This was somewhere in between and the flavor was better than many I've tried. The white rice was sticky & just right. Portions were huge. I have enough to have a second meal of the same size tomorrow. I'd definitely recommend this spot to someone looking for some good take-out! Enjoy! read more

So I've tried many Chinese places around and just haven't been happy. My son suggested we try China King and we had nothing to lose and gave it a try. I think it was really really good. I'm from NY originally and NY Chinese is different, can't explain it exactly but it is. I think this place in some ways is better. There shrimp and lobster sauce is so flavorful. Also, the egg drop soup is also flavorful. I've had dishes from other places and it was bland and needed soy sauce. Not China King, all their food was flavorful. Their dumplings are really good too, a lot of places say you're ordering a dumpling and it clearly looks and tastes like a potsticker. All their food tastes different too. It's not like they use the same sauce for every dish. Orange chicken taste like orange chicken, sesame tastes like sesame etc etc.. They actually have sesame shrimp and that's a first for me and again so so good. Egg foo young was good, roast pork Chinese veggies was good. I always order a lot when I do. Fried wontons weren't over cooked. I can keep going and going. They have online ordering which was super convenient and easy to use. You can add little notes to each item and so far It's been right every time. I only went through the walk in/pickup area. They have plexiglass up, no contact pick up, so that's good. The only thing I did witness was everyone behind the plexiglass (there was about 3 of them) were not wearing masks. I'm not super worried but at the same time it would've been nice to just see them on while cooking and handling food. That's not a deal breaker for me though. My life would be complete if they delivered! Such good Chinese food. I live off of Amelia Church Rd and have several closer options, but I'll choose to drive further out for better quality and taste. I'm new to this area and absolutely love Chinese, I am currently pregnant and decided to come here after calling ahead of time to make sure they had wontons with no crab meat that has just the cream cheese. The woman on the phone confirmed with me that they did. While ordering the waitress told me the wontons had pork in them and I told her that was fine thinking they also had cream cheese like the woman told me on the phone. They were ONLY pork. I have never had a wonton like that and it was definitely not what I had asked for and wontons are my favorite part of my food. But their fried dumplings were very good and had good service and a short wait. read more

The best chinese place I've been to and continue to go to after 15+ years. They even know us when we call because it's usually the same order over and over. We go at least once a week. The best Chicken and Broccoli and fastest service ever. Whenever they say it'll take ten minutes on the phones it's never ten minutes it's always ready by the time we get there. read more

I have been a customer of China King for 11 years and I LOVE their food and the service. I usually order take-out and sometimes I will eat in the restaurant. The owners are so nice. I have actually watched their son, Jay, grow up over the past 11 years. IMHO they have THE best-tasting Chinese food in this area! I HIGHLY recommend them. The restaurant is always nice and clean! First if all, don't be turned away by my 3-star review. I find pretty much all American Chinese food to be overly salty and it makes me feel terrible after I eat it, so I rarely eat Chinese. Therefore, my scale is pretty much 1-3 stars, and then David's Dumpling and Noodle Bar. I was pleasantly surprised by the sit down area. My son was excited by the Nemo and Dory fishes in the fish tank. The portions were huge, much larger than I am used to, and so well priced. $7 for the specials (with egg roll and fried rice) and up to $10-12 for the seafood dishes. My Moo shu pork (the standard first dish I always get at a new Chinese spot) had a ton of veggies, even some I'm not used to seeing in there, like snow peas. I am a big fan of that, as the reason I go straight for Moo Shu is because in general I feel like veggies are missing from Chinese dishes. The pancakes were really flimsy, and fell apart when I tried to use them. I actually prefer that kind, but I think they had been folded in the same place for so long that they just cracked along the fold seam when I tried to fill them. No matter, I just ate it with rice. My 4 year old son was happy with his sweet and sour chicken. Nothing special there, except the $3.25 price for a kid's meal, which is cheaper than a happy meal. My husband was pleased with his egg roll and General Tso's, which I should note was NOT SPICY at all, other than a fleck of red pepper here and there. I thought it was a tad on the crunchy side. We will definitely be trying out their take out (or delivery?!) the next time we have a Chinese craving. I spotted a couple of dishes I had never seen before that I am really curious to try out, and it's way better than the other counter service restaurants I've found in Clayton/Garner since the China Garden closed down. read more

The food: The general tso chicken was mediocre at best. Not spicy at all, which is common for most Chinese take out unless you request extra spicy. Pork fried rice okay but lacked flavor. The pieces were very small and way over cooked, making them hard to chew. The place: It looks dated and sort of grungy. There was a smell that I can't describe but seemed clean overall. Staff: I guess you could call her pleasant? She didn't say anything other than "here or take out" and then my total. I'm not sure I'll even go back to try a different dish. read more

So frustrating. The Egg Drop soup was decent along with the fried noodles from the table. The egg rolls were luke warm but they did the job. The chicken fried rice looked like a bowl of salmonella! It was absolutely awful. Please put more effort into the cooking of the food rather than meeting the "10 minute" claims made when you call it in. 40/42 you need to step up your food game. With the exception of Simple Twist and Ugly Mug, everything at 40/42 is terrible. We need better options; get some better food establishments. read more

I have had Chinese food all over this country and the world, and this is some of the best I have had. Yes, it is somewhat the standard Americanized stuff, but the difference between this and most places like it is that the food is very fresh, and it tastes like it. My first experience was dining in. It is a small place but very clean and nice intimate décor and atmosphere. We ordered a variety since this was our first try. The hot and sour soup was wonderful. The PuPu platter was excellent! The beef steak sticks alone were amazing. I would order just these, they were so good. The shrimp toast was great. This is something that is typically very oily at most places, but not here. It was light and delicious. I had the General Tsaos chicken and it was very good. Crispy coating, not drowning in sauce. My husband had the chicken fried rice and said it was also great. We liked it all and the price was very reasonable as well. This is one of the few places I have seen that also offers brown rice! Makes it even better. We had take-out this last Friday; this time I got Black Pepper Chicken, one of my favorites that is rarely offered as takeout or on standard menus. I am happy to say, it was FANTASTIC!! Very flavorful, just the right amount of spice and again, with the brown rice it was great. Also had the crab rangoons, which were not the standard frozen type but were handmade, fresh and tasted like it, not oily and very crispy. This is truly a great place for Chinese. Just moved out to this area and we love Chinese food so we thought we would try it. Our favorite...General Tso's so I had to get it. Definitely the worst General Tso's I have ever got! Talk about a nice little hole-in-the-wall find. I've only visited once, but I'll definitely be back. The lunch specials are all under $5, taste very good, and are portioned much more generously than I expected. I stopped in a few Sundays ago and I'm definitely glad I did -- it's not the most convenient Chinese food to my home, but I've no qualms about driving a few extra miles to have lunch. read more

We won't go here again. Took my son a few weeks ago and we loved it. It was pretty clean and food was fresh. Tonight we went as a whole family, floors were dirty, food was mediocre, and a lady walked out because there was a roach, yes a roach, on her table. Then when we went to pay, the guy in front of me was trying to negotiate his bill as it ended his dinner early and they weren't having it, he paid full price and was not happy either. This place is ok for quick Chinese food. However, you get pretty short changed with the seafood dishes. Also, there is a really young kid who takes your to go order. If you don't go fast he will almost be touching noses with you. He gets that close. read more

I was in the area for a job interview. I was in the mood for Chinese food and this establishment was near where I was staying. I ordered General Tso's chicken and crab rangoon. I like my food spicy, so I ordered mine extra spicy. I have to say that this was terrific. I highly recommend this to anyone that is in the mood for Chinese food.
