What a rat hole. We are moving to Grants Pass and saw their sign saying "China Hut" seemed a good option after working hard at moving. I am 78 years old, grew up in the Bay Area, have moved many to times and have eaten at countless restaurants. China Hut is by FAR the most absolute worst dining experience I have ever encountered. The atmosphere was horrible, the cleanliness was horrible and worst of all was the food. If I could give 0 stars, I would. Maybe I come from a different place, but in my town, when a restaurant posts hours - they HONOR them REGARDLESS of whether or not it's a slow night! I came from an 11-hour drive and wanted a simple meal: soup. I bypassed other towns earlier in the evening with restaurants that were open because when I looked at their hours, I saw they would still be open by the time I arrived. With this being my destination for the night, I wanted nothing more than to grab dinner, go to my hotel room, curl up in bed, and relax. With that thought in mind, I pressed through my drive, passed by other towns with open restaurants earlier in the evening, and finally after a long drive, I arrived. Yep, I arrived before their posted closing time. Exhausted and starving, I rolled up, got out of my car, and was surprised when I went to open the door to find it locked. At that moment a staff member was leaving the restaurant and said to me, through the locked door, they were closed. I asked why they closed since it wasn't 10pm yet - their hours said they close at 10pm. Well, apparently businesses do things a little bit differently here because she said they decided to close early due to it being a slow night. C'mon. You never know when a customer is going to come in. Where I come from we keep the doors open and honor the posted hours regardless of whether or not it's slow. I chose this restaurant because it would still be "open" by the time I rolled into town. Since I rolled into town pretty late, now I'm pissed off at this point everything else is closed now. If I knew they weren't going to honor their hours I would have gotten food earlier on the road, but since this was my destination for the night, I thought it would be nice to relax and eat dinner in my hotel room and not have to worry about driving anymore. But at this point since all of the other restaurants are closed, I'm writing this review, still pissed off and starving. China Hut is a decent Chinese restaurant in Grants Pass. We ordered takeout for dinner on a weekday night. The place seemed pretty busy, but it only took them 15 minutes to get our order ready. If you don't know what you want, they do have several "Special Combination Dinners" and "Special Family Dinners" that you can choose from. We just took our chances and ordered a few different items: Mongolian Beef, Orange Chicken, Szechuan Chow Mein (pan fried noodles with shrimp, chicken, and mixed vegetables), and Mixed Vegetable Deluxe (tofu and mixed vegetables). The lady at the front desk was super nice. She mentioned that our order included free white rice, which is great. They also gave us several fortune cookies which was a bonus as well. All of the food tasted good and was cooked well. Overall, it seemed expensive, but you do get a ton of food. We had plenty to feed four adults and tons of leftovers. Well I have been eating here since 1991 and have always loved it. I ordered dinner to eat there recently and added some sweet chili sauce as I usually do. I quickly tasted something spoiled. I narrowed it down to the sauce. I opened the jar and it smelled spoiled. I summoned the waitress and addressed my concern of it being spoiled. She said it was a vinegar smell and that they had switched brand of sauces recently. I had only taken a couple of bites. They know me there and that I always finish my meal. I immediately pulled out my credit card to pay for a full uneaten meal. The server summoned the lady at the front (who is like the manager and I have known her for years) who asked me what was wrong and I told her the sauce was spoiled. She said maybe it sat out too long. She also said they had not switched brands of sauces. She made no offer to replace the meal or resolve my issue, took my credit card and charged me for the meal. They lost a 30+ year customer. I know my $15 doesn't matter as the owners are multi millionaire's. I am also calling the health department to make sure they are storing their sauces appropriately. Food was tasty and they gave you plenty. Prices were normal. Now to the service- when we got there no one was there. In about 5 minutes the place was packed. Our waitress(the only one) hustled her butt off. She did a great job getting everyone their orders and even picked up the dishes and cleaned the tables because people kept coming in. I was traveling through Grants Pass, wanted a good Chinese dinner. China Hut got some good reviews. Ordered a three-item combo dinner plate. Lots of food. Shrimp, sweet and sour pork were over-breaded, over-cooked, barely edible. Chow mein was a bunch of sliced celery with a few water chestnuts over those Chung King dried noodles. Threw it away. This was classic "American" Chinese food. Even got saltines with my egg flower soup. Waitess was very good and professional. Nice decor. Right on the main drag. One star for all the non-food matters. Zero stars for the food. Very upset stomach all evening - too much oil sloshing around. I hate giving bad reviews, but if you love real Chinese food - eat here at your peril. read more

This was the worst Chinese food we EVER had. I ordered 3 vegetarian dishes, but there was definitely some meat ( what tasted like pork in one of them). On top of that the service was extremely rude and they added a tip themselves to my credit card payment. Over the years we have eaten Chinese food@ the China Hut, there is not much selection in this area. I like to order a take out meal with chicken almond chow mien and I ask SUE to take out the mushrooms......once or twice over 20+ years ordering this and speaking to Sue directly, the food order is correct. But most of the time the mushrooms were again in the chow mien. When I called to speak to her, she offered no refund and pretended to not understand. I am so done with the way she treats customers. I wish someone would open another Chinese restaurant, on the south end of town. I gave them one star, as sometimes the food is good and is what I ordered, but that is very very rare. Dont believe the Yelp price review of this spot. Everything here is close to 11 (10.75 for example) or more. We stopped by specifically hoping for some decent Chinese food at a decent price. The food wasn't poison or anything, and the place has very cool artwork, but I was pretty surprised that the food was so bland... it didn't really have much flavor at all. I wouldn't return to this restaurant. I admit that it has great potential because the food was decent quality (though flavorless), and the ambiance was pretty awesome. I dont wish this place badly at all. In fact, it sort of pains me to give them a bad review. I hope they take these comments to heart and get it together. Our first time eating dinner. Our review has mixed feelings. First, our waitress Stevie was awesome. She had drinks and food at our table so fast. She took the time to explain the menu to us and was just an all around great waitress. Now the food. If you want a massive amount of food, this is your place. For 9-12$ you get a very healthy amount to eat. We had to take half of our plates home. Quality of food was lacking. I had the Szechuan chicken and it was hot, spicy and favorable. I would definitely recommend not eating any of the food at this establishment. This food is nothing near Chinese cuisine. As a person of Chinese descent, this food is a slap in the face to my culture. The chow-mien was nothing but horrid. The dish did not have noodles. All it consisted of was salad wanton crackers, celery, bean sprouts, and some old soy sauce...As for the curry chicken, there was neither curry nor chicken. The dish was just a heap of uncooked vegetables with turmeric and oil slapped onto it. As for the rice, it tasted like UNCLE BENS rice. This rice was unbearable. Every bite felt like it was torture. The only reason I kept eating was because my relatives were treating me to dinner. Nevertheless, that was not the worst of it. The waitress had the audacity to argue with my grandpa over a dish. All he did was make a simple request on a dish. He wanted the noodles to be slightly dry and not too soggy. Yet, she interjected and pretty much said he does not know what he is talking about. She even said if he knew what he was talking about, then he should step into the kitchen. She insisted that she would put him to work...IF any of you stop by Grant Pass,OR, please refrain from this restaurant. You are guaranteed to have poor quality in food and service. I've been coming here my entire life. In fact my parents used to work as dish washers here when they were teenagers (40ish years ago). The food is super good. I'm never disappointed. The best dishes are the szechuan chicken(all white meat on any chicken dish), sweet and sour chicken, hot and sour soup, fried rice (especially the veggie fried rice ), and the egg rolls. They have a lot of good food but those are my personal favorites. I don't know if the food is authentic 100% but I do know the owners are originally from China and have owned the restaurant since it opened well before I was born. They are really nice people who have put their whole lives into the restaurant. 100% would recommend this place to anyone! read more
