Anna and her husband rely on word-of-mouth, which is how we learned about this great Chinese Gourmet restaurant/take-out eatery right off the highway on route 322 in SOUTHINGTON, just up the hill from the truck stop. The freshly-made selections are outstanding! We typically order pork fried rice, hot and sour soup, wonton soup, teriyaki beef skewers, pork spring rolls, shrimp rolls and General Tso's Chicken. Their hours are flexible from 4 pm on and they are closed on Sunday and Monday (disregard the inaccurate listing of hours controlled by fee-greedy IT advertising types!). Stopped in for the first time last night, did a takeout order. Called at 4:45pm on a Saturday night, and was told the food would be ready in 45 minutes. A bit long, but China Gourmet was on the other side of Waterbury for me, so this was OK. My Fiancee ordered the Chicken and Snow Peas combination, I wasn't that hungry, just went with a Pan Fried Dumplings appetizer and a Shrimp Egg Roll. Had a little trouble finding the place, my Garmin GPS told me it was next to the Home Depot, where the Blimpies is. But it's really across the street, in the strip mall in front of the movie theatre. My food was ready when I arrived, woman brought it out and she answered another incoming call. I overheard that the wait was now a hour and a half for takeout. My opinion is, if they are that busy, maybe they should hire a few more cooks. Well, brought the food home. My dumplings were slightly burnt, but were still delicious. Egg roll, somewhat smallish, was ok. My fiancee's Chicken & Snow Peas were alright. I had some of hers, was not impressed with the dish. We weren't overwhelmed, but most likely we'll be giving China Gourmet another try, it's on the way home for me, so it's convenient. This place is awesome~~ Was inspired by craig leban to trek out to this location. We went around noon on a Saturday for the dim sum and were luckily sat right away. It is very crowded but large restaurant. It was a fun experience just choosing random options of the cart as we had some trouble communicating with the waitresses. Everything we ordered was delicious! Highlights included the noodle of the day dish, shrimp dumplings, bok choy and veggie dumplings. I highly recommend going. this is probably one of my favorite chinese restaurants at the moment. the people working here are super friendly, really some of the nicest people i have come across in a restaurant. they go out of their way to make special foods for me, i ask a lot of questions and they ask back and we figure out what i am looking for! i always get great food here. i just wish the veg soup wasnt in a chicken broth! love their general tso bean curd :) also if you like tea this place has more tea than i have ever seen on a menu - full on tea ceremonies, the whole deal .. best tea ever!! this place isnt very big, and they dont do sit-down service for lunch and i think dinner table service isnt until 7pm - their take out business is CRAZY busy, but its worth the wait .. read more

Admittedly, it has been years since I've had dinner here. When we were kids, Chinese food was a treat that we would only have once, maybe twice a year. I met Sheri in high school and her family restaurant, China Gourmet, became the go-to place for us to get takeout--back then, it was just the standards that you would expect on a Chinese takeout menu. I am happy to say that this place has evolved so much over time, now incorporating authentic, traditional dishes and a line of gourmet teas. The dining room opens about 7pm (before then, it is only takeout business) and while it is tiny, it is worth the wait. Sheri talked us through the menu, offering suggestions and answering any questions we had. Tom and I both opted to try their specialty teas. Turns out that one of the owners, Annie, has a friend back in China who is a Tea Professor (who knew there was such a thing?!) and Annie has been putting together loose tea creations for a while now and they are something that anyone who enjoys tea should try. Onto our meal--fried noodles and a sweet sauce for dipping were brought to the table for us to enjoy while perusing the menu. We started with the fried dumplings--to compare to any other place we've had, it was so fresh, you could tell by the loosely packed meat on the inside--it was not some mysterious looking meat mix that you can get other places. For our entrees, we tried some of the newer, authentic dishes--Tom had the Water-Braised Beef over veggies, with a sauce that gave it a nice bite of heat without being overpowering--nicely presented in a covered saute pan over a tea light warmer. I had the Peking Pork--when it arrived at the table, I was instructed to make sure that I got a bite of all three layers in one-the pork, julienned scallions and the slaw underneath-I understood why as soon as I took a bite, the sweetness of the sauce balanced with the crunch of the slaw and the slight bite of the onion all worked together nicely. It is impressive to find such innovative and authentic cuisine in such an off-the-beaten-path place. Tom is now hooked and it is safe to say we'll return especially since the prices are more than reasonable for something other than your typical takeout place. read more

Excellent food and various kinds of homemade Tea to enjoy! Absolutely love this place! It's truly a pleasure to eat here. I have been doing so for over 20 years. I have had everything on the menu and it's all very good, but lately I have become obsessed with the Tai Chin Chicken and one of several of the Chef's own dishes, the Green Curry Chicken. Both are spiced perfectly with a complex blend of seasonings providing a rich flavor, with just the right amount of heat; vegetables always done just right, and tender, tasty chicken. The Tea selection is quite good for this area. All the various teas are made from scratch and are great! It's small but nice inside. It's dine in and take out Monday - Thurs. They only do take out on Friday night and all day Saturday. It's a 2 person family operation and everything is made to older, so you may have to wait a bit at times but not to worry, just sit down have any one of the exotic, tasty homemade teas, and relax. The place is legit. We ordered the Hot and Sour soup, Pork Dumplings, Kung Pao Chicken and this Triple Delight thing which was shrimp, chicken and beef in a brown sauce. Best Hot and Sour soup I've ever had. Seriously. So fresh, chunks of awesome veggies...light on the chicken, but I personally like it better full of veggies and tofu instead of chicken. The Dumplings were also delicious. Definitely not your standard dumplings/gyoza/potstickers. The filling was a type of BBQ'd pork, and all pork, free of random filling that makes you question what it really is. The outside was doughy, yet with crispy edges from being fried slightly in the pan. The Kung Pao Chicken was yummy...nothing that special, but certainly delicious and authentic. The same is true for the Triple Delight. Although the shrimp in this dish was cooked extremely well, and almost melted in your mouth. The only downsides were that it was kind of pricey for a small Chinese restaurant, and the portions weren't huge for the price. I love this place. I wish I lived closer. I used to work in the area and would stop in for authentic Chinese food and tea whenever my schedule would allow. This is a great small family run type of place. There are 5-7 tables total so it's cozy. The tea is excellent and the food is fresh, made to order, and amazing. There are many specials offered that you will not see anywhere else, and I have never been disappointed trying any of them. After being on the road for 12 grueling hours on our way back to NH, we were tired and hungry. The kids (4 and 6) love going to Chinese restaurants, so I fired up the yelp app and found this place. We were warmly greeted by a extremely nice young woman (who I can only assume us the daughter of the owner). We obviously didn't have a reservation and they were expecting a few large parties in 45 mins. We told them that we had no intention of staying long as we still had over 2 hours to go on our journey home and they promptly sat us. The woman was so sympathetic to our long and tiring day in traffic. She brought my wife stress-relieving tea and got our kids chicken fingers and white rice very quickly. She even crafted up some "teaching chopsticks" for them! She was just incredible. We got Kung Pao chicken and Curry chicken... Both extremely fresh and not super sweet and heavy. Veggies were perfect! It was just what we needed to get home in better spirits. Bill was $30 which was very reasonable for service and quality of food. So glad we found this place! read more

My wife and I happened to see this small, unassuming restaurant while bringing our daughter to music lessons in the same plaza. I have lived in the area for most of my life and really wish that I had found this place in 1990 when it was opened! This is absolutely some of the best Chinese cuisine that I have eaten. Everything is cooked fresh and to order, (which is why you will not hear the familiar "10 minutes" when told how long until your order is ready). So far, we have tried the Peking Pork, Singapore Mei Fun, and I had to try the ubiquitous General Tso chicken... all were fantastic. The Peking Pork is a unique dish with fantastic depth of flavor and the General Tso is excellent, not just the standard chicken covered in orange sauce. The hours are not as convenient as most restaurants, but it is a small business with only one chef, so that is to be expected. (and the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5) Order here when you want to eat well, not quickly - the food is definitely worth the wait. Another tip - they do not have call waiting, so if you call and get right to voice mail, don't leave a message, just keep calling until you leave your order with a person! read more

I actually signed up for Yelp tonight to review China Gourmet. My boyfriend and I have been looking unsuccessfully for a good Chinese restaurant in Southington for several years, and tonight decided to try China Gourmet, after reading a few positive review from Yelp and elsewhere. The service was really fantastic, and I felt that it should be recognized. The woman who took my order was very helpful and friendly, and assisted me with my order over the phone even though we didn't have a menu. My food was ready promptly when I arrived after 20 minutes, and I was greeted by a very friendly woman, the owner's daughter. She chatted with me very comfortably while ringing me out, asking about my New Year's plans, sharing information about the restaurant, etc. Again, super impressed with the friendly service. The restaurant is tucked away into the corner of a small plaza near the movie theater. The interior is small, but looked cozy, and there were several couples dining in while I picked up my takeout. Prices were reasonable, and the food was excellent. I got the shrimp lo-mein, and boyfriend got General Tso's chicken, both of which we enjoyed. The fried rice may have been a little over-fried, but that was really our only complaint about the food. Crab rangoon were excellent, as was the duck sauce. Everything was overcooked: the chicken was dry, the crab rangoon was inedibly over-fried to the point that it just crumbled, and everything tasted like burny, old, crustry frying oil. I ordered for me, my wife and son, nothing crazy, one main dish and several appetizers. "45 Minutes"?!?! Then the nail in the coffin... $73 and change! Youch! I walked out stunned but still hopeful it was all worth it... Not even close! My wife actually got queazy after eating the dumplings and after a bite of the General Tso's refused to eat anymore. It is refreshing to see two people who care so much about the quality of their food. My boyfriend and I stopped in (will make reservations next time) and had the iced tea, Chinese bacon dish, steamed dumplings, egg drop soup, orange chicken and pork fried rice. So much food, but so good. There wasn't one thing we didn't like. I particularly loved to pork in the fried rice- it was so tender I couldn't believe it! This is truly your Mom & Pop operation: Jackson cooks, and Annie (whose English is flawless,) runs the counter. To date, most of the dishes we've tried have been beyond superlative. A few recommendations: the West Lake Beef Soup, something not offered at most Chinese restaurants, is loaded with minced beef, and has a tasty stock. And now for something to die for: Their duck dishes. Pick one, and prepare to be wowed. Not on the menu, the Duck Fried Rice, our absolute favorite dish. It takes a bit of time to get your food, not a bad thing, since this place doesn't have piles of sliced and diced foods, drying out, waiting for somebody to order something. I've wanted to check out China Gourmet for some time now. It's location is tucked way back in a small plaza. There's no neon lights or grand signs to draw you in. If it wasn't for Yelp, I don't think I would even know it existed. I recently decided to give it a try, and boy was I surprised. This isn't your standard Chinese restaurant. At China Gourmet, there is a sense of a truly prepared meal. The ingredients are fresh and the flavors bold. Some people love their standard Chinese fair, but I for one enjoy the departure from those cookie cutter recipes. You'll still find your standard favorites, but I am confident they won't taste the same. For me...that's a good thing. I'm always looking for something new and different. The staff is friendly and the owners story is fascinating (see the menu).
