This place used to be the best in Butler but since a recent management change it has gone down hill. I still eat here quite a bit, as I work very close. My husband and I decided to go in to eat tonight (we usually take out) The inside is very outdated and can be considered quite dirty, but they seem to be in the process of updating. The staff is friendly and attentive, so that is a plus. There were about 5 other tables there while we were and there was one waitress for all but she did a good job. Complementary: hot tea and crunchy strips (lol sorry i don't know what they're called) He Got : an egg roll, black pepper chicken and fried rice. It was a good portion and he was pleased although I thought the chicken had little flavor. I Got : Hot and Sour soup, Kung Pao Chicken and fried rice. The Hot and Sour soup was on point. The Kung Pao had more veggies (celery and carrots) than actual chicken but had good flavor. All in all, we are sad it's not as great as when Mr. Lee owned it but it's not the worse and we will be back. read more

The food we had delivered last night was awful. Appetizer: Barbecued Spareribs. This was the least awful course. Flavor was okay, but they were tough. Soup: Seafood Soup (for 2). Utterly inedible. The seafood wasn't in a broth but in some kind of translucent slime. The seafood was squishy and flavorless. I tried three small spoons then threw it all away. Chef's Special: Duck Sauce Chicken. Sounds great, right? It was tiny pieces of chicken inside clumps of batter (or something) that were deep fried. The sauce was run of the mill, corn syrupy, sweet and sour sauce. I tasted neither chicken nor duck. I was starving, so I wolfed down half a dozen clumps and threw the rest away. Fried Rice. Exactly that. Plain, oily, under-cooked fried seeds. My wife found one pea. None for me. Our kitchen garbage bag was starting to get full by this point in the meal. Moo Shu Veg. (4 crepes). Oily, overcooked, and mostly cabbage. The crepes were not crepes. They looked, smelled, felt and tasted like stale supermarket flour tortillas. One bite, then it was time for me to take out the kitchen garbage. The cost for this meal for two was about $35 which would have been fine if the food was good. Delivery took about 40 minutes and the driver was cool. This too would have been fine if the food was good. I'm very disappointed. It was our first night in our new home and while waiting for the delivery I fantasized about weekly Chinese food nights at our place. Too bad. So sad. Oh, and we both had indigestion after we tried to eat this food. Next time we order delivery, we'll try the neighborhood pizza place. Stay tuned. read more

I used to think this was one of the best Chinese restaurants in the area for a long time, however, after the last trip, I won't be returning. Purchased sweet and sour soup and was given egg drop, but that's not the worst part. Since eating this last night, I have spent a majority of the night in the bathroom throwing up and having diarrhea. This has been one of the worst cases of food poisoning ever. We've been ordering from here for the past three or four years. Food has been good and bad depending on the day. Tonight I ordered for delivery my usual, General Tso's and white rice. Any time I've ever ordered it in the past (fairly regularly) I have never had to specify to make it not too spicy, because they simply never made it spicy. Bear in mind I love Indian cuisine and I can eat spicy/hot food. This General Tso's chicken was so hot my throat immediately started burning and my eyes watering. I thought "ok, I was expecting it to be hot, it's fine" and I took another bite. Now my nose it running, my lips are on fire, and this is just not edible. I've eaten channa batura in India from a street vendor and never in my life have I eaten food so hot than this chicken. I understand you have some new competition down at the mall, but you don't need to prove yourselves like this. read more

Let me just tell you the pupu platters shrimp which consisted of 2, were over cooked out. Not happy. The teriyaki beef sticks are so rubbery and don't even taste like they have been marinated long at all! The spare ribs are all fatty and bone? Spring roll is okay along with the fried rice. The main dish of coconut shrimp is all breading and disgusting was not expecting this for my first time experience!!! Not Sorry and I am not happy with this food!!! read more

We received our food very timely and the door dash driver was great but the food was horrible! It all tasted sour and had a bad smell to it. Very disappointed considering the cost of door dash and we couldn't even eat the food.... it was that bad! Will order from someplace else next time. read more

For a standard fare of Americanized Chinese food, it is on par with other Chinese restaurant if not slightly better. My waitress provided great customer service and that's what set it apart. She was an older Filipino woman. read more

Just ordered from them tonight on the "Bring Me That" website. I ordered 8 fried dumplings; only got 5. I ordered beef with garlic sauce; it was left off the order.I called to complain; the guy said he would send it out. 30 minutes later I got a call "Did I have the cash to pay because they hadn't charged me for that item". This place is obviously under new ownership. We ordered takeout twice and they didn't start cooking our order until we showed up to pick it up! When Mr. Lee ran this restaurant, he trusted his customer to pick up the food. This is just ridiculous. What's the sense in ordering ahead? Isn't that what take out is? We will never go to this place again and it's quite sad because we have been going there for over 20 years and have loved it until now. Very dissapointed. Look past a few things for good food and GREAT service! This establishment needs an update on it's outside & inside - owner should know loads of exterior peeling paint, sagging plywood entrance, cracked concrete walks, worn out bathrooms more than shop worn and dated decor are a "put off" to most diners. It says you have either gotten complacent, givIen up and plain don't care! It also can be an indicator of what you are willing to put into the food quality & service. That being said we looked past all that and entered the restaurant on a quiet Sunday afternoon. There were patrons exiting who seemed happy with the food - a good sign. It was 1 pm and only one other booth other than our own was full. Scores of empty tables. We were acknowledged in a friendly manner by the owner on entering...that is a positive! The food smelled great! First off - main menu is just toooo extensive - too many long descriptions...patrons want simple - not a novella to read! 2 pages of great ones are far better than jillions of so - so! You can retain "Gourmet" with a simplified menu that is not so overwhelming. We paroosed the buffet which had an hour left and seemed sparse with many things down to one or empty... Nonetheless we were hungry and opted for the buffet. No surprises here - usual fare. Good things - the server/waiter Bryan was excellent and professional! Most accomodating - he got us fresh hot WonTon soup from the kitchen since the soups on the line were not ones we preferred. He was friendly and a huge asset to this place. He made sure the Crab Rangoon was also brought out fresh to replenish an empty tray. He shared local knowledge of the area that we inquired about and was extremely good about taking away used plates. The food quality was very good. Temperatures were spot on and taste was very good as well. The value was there too. We will more likely than not return in the near future as it was an overall good experience! Our advice for China Buffet - repair and freshen up your outside & inside decor!!! Make it welcoming and not ramshackled & sad! Second - pare down the large menu to what are your best house specialties and make them shine with freshness. Tucked away on a backroad (as I remember) is this incredible gem of a restaurant. I had my first taste of peking duck here--the owners said we should have called ahead, but they made it anyway. It was out of this world. Do your self a favor if you're in the area and go China Gourmet. read more

This place used to be the best Chinese restaurant in Butler. I don't know what happened, but I've complained to them twice before tonight (over the course of the last year or so) and my concerns haven't been addressed at all. First, their food is the most expensive Chinese food in town. Again, used to be worthwhile but that's no longer the case. The fried rice seemed to have been boiled and lightly doused with soy sauce, the egg rolls and spring rolls were identical - neither had any meat in them, and both were soggy - and the Peking duck had the texture of tree bark and tasted like it had been sitting out for at least a couple days. They used to have incredible service. That's no longer the case either. Granted, it's unusual for a restaurant in Butler to have a website (or even an outgoing message by phone) to indicate holiday hours or unusual closings - but China Gourmet has a website that clearly indicates that it's open when it is not. They have an option for online ordering that allows you to place an order, get a receipt for that order and charges your bank account for that order...then they never deliver or respond to you in any way. Their menu is misleading or outright false - the Pu Pu Platter, for example has a tiny fraction of what they claim, and mostly consists of what appears to be lettuce. I don't like lettuce to begin with, so I can't comment on the quality. I can say that it was certainly not supposed to be half of what little food was there. Other things on the menu were described cryptically, and many did not come close to matching their description. I recommend calling and asking for details if you must order from this place. In short, this formerly great restaurant now serves terrible, stale and overpriced food. They have a misleading menu and a fraudulent website. They are not only unworthy of your time and money, they may cost you both with not even bad food in return. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

We've been going to China Gourmet for years. We recently had the opportunity to come back to town and have supper with some friends. We suggested China Gourmet because the food was always great and the atmosphere quiet and unrushed so we could catch up. We arrived at 7:30 and were invited to the buffet -- which we were told closed at 8 -- but were also assured would remain open until we were finished eating. The only item which was replenished was the General Tso's; most of the food items appeared to be leftover from hours ago and I wouldn't touch them. Our server was friendly and reasonably attentive but seemed embarrassed that there was nothing at the buffet we could eat even though she had suggested it. A little before 9pm, the lights started going off. We asked the server when the restaurant closed and she stated she wasn't sure, she'd check with the new owner. Apparently the new owner stated the restaurant closes at 9pm although the handwritten sign on the door said 9:30. When we went out to the parking lot, we observed the new owner's car -- a Cadillac SUV -- parked in two spaces immediately in front of the restaurant doors. If you own a restaurant, would you really park in the first space -- or park over the lines so customers can't park? It's a shame what's become of this restaurant but we won't be going back. read more

This restaurant is rough looking and feels a little dirty. The parking is plentiful but lot has huge canyons. On a Saturday at 6pm the place was empty. The menu is huge and overwhelming with interesting descriptions. I ordered Sesame noodles for app. It was OK but had more of a peanut butter taste. The main course I had Twins of sea with tempura shrimp and scallops in a sweet sauce served in a wonton shell that looked like a taco salad shell. The seafood was perfectly cooked and was delicious but the sauce was very sweet. Thankfully it was sparse. My partner had Gen Tso chicken which was really sweet and not spicy at all. My steamed rice tasted like instant rice while the fried rice was better. Service was quick and friendly but the menu is inflexible. We wanted LoMein instead of rice but this was not possible. What? It's on the menu. Overall was like buffet Chinese (quick and filling but not very good) but at table service prices. read more

We go often to this excellent Chinese restaurant run by a Chinese husband and wife. Immediately after you are seated, a bowl of Chinese chips with a mustard sauce and an apricot sauce are served. The dinner arrives shortly after being ordered except if you order the delicious duck which takes longer. The specialties are beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. They do have a buffet on certain nights but I have never eaten it so I cannot comment, but I would assume it is of the same quality as the regular menu. We always order the pork or chicken fried rice plus (yummy) plus something from the speciality menu and have plenty to take home for the next couple of days. Have been ordering take out here maybe once a month or so for the last couple years. Tried something last week that I hadn't had here before, Sesame Chicken. Very disappointed. Not much chicken in the deep fried lumps of batter with little bits of shredded chicken in them. And the sauce was just sweet and generally tasteless. Very disappointed. I usually don't order anything deep fried in a Chinese restaurant for this reason. But after having it at Shanghai Tokyo in Sarver a couple weeks ago, and really enjoying the cubes of white meat chicken and the excellent sauce, I thought I'd give it a try here. I'm going back to my favorites, without the deep fried batter. read more
