The person at the register was abrupt, refused a reasonable substitution, and insisted on hidden up-charges from an outdated menu. When we canceled within a minute she refused a refund. Not coming back. In Detail: We went in for lunch and immediately had an uncomfortable interaction with the woman taking orders -- no greeting and a noticeably hostile tone. The menu at the counter didn't match prices; she said several items had an upcharge without explaining which or why. We asked if the lunch that included an egg roll could be substituted (we don't eat pork) and she flatly refused, then offered a drink instead -- even though a drink was already listed as included. When we began choosing, she limited us to only the front row of the fridge and acted annoyed the whole time. After deciding we didn't want the meal, we asked to cancel and requested a refund. Only a minute had passed but she refused, saying she'd already started working on it. Between the rude tone, misleading pricing, and refusal to refund a canceled order, this was a poor experience. When we got the orders, one of the orders was wrong. When I called back to let them know that something was wrong, the lady became very irate, nasty and rude. Finally, she stated that she would make the order- over. When I got there, it was a different tune. She became even more nastier. GARBAGE!!!! I ordered a large pork fried rice, a large, boneless spareribs, and an order of crab Rangoons (8) off the menu in the store. I chose to eat at the restaurant with my son and the first thing was I got my order of crab Rangoons and they shorted me one Rangoon I called them out on it and the lady proceeded to defend the fact that the online menu says seven not eight, but I ordered from the menu in the store off the counter and it said eight anyway they were about the size of a quarter and she refused to bring out the eighth one. Everything was served on paper plates, plastic forks, and ketchup packet style duck sauce, teriyaki sauce. The portions were terrible. My son ordered the chicken fried rice, and the chicken was shredded so much that it was probably the size of a silver dollar throughout all his rice, the pork in my pork fried rice, was diced into diced squares so small you could hardly make them out, clearly I could see that this restaurant was gouging. The meal was $46 and I would not have paid more than $20 for everything and that includes the tip. I would advise anyone planning on going to this place to avoid it because you'll be tremendously disappointed, they're overpriced, and the meals are very undervalued. China Garden is a very small take out/eat in restaurant; it's cheap and looks it, but the food is GREAT!! Our dinner was served on disposable plates, the soy sauce in packets, but the utensils were metal and the meal, which took awhile to prepare, was excellent!! IF I could give this place a ZERO rating, I would. My wife and I went there today for lunch. We were the ONLY patrons in the place. I ordered the shrimp and snow peas with wonton soup. My wife ordered the sesame chicken with wonton soup. 1) the noodles served with the soup were stale. We called this to the attention of the staff and only got an excuse and that they "were not crisp" as opposed to being "stale". Then the server came out with another bag of noodles, eating one and commenting "They are fresh!" to contradict what we had experienced. 2) the chicken tasted old and was tough 3) the shrimp was old and tasted like it had been packed in fish! We could not finish the meal, paid the check and left. A few minutes later, I felt compelled to share our experience with the manager. She NOT ONCE apologized. All she did was give excuses and made statements like "If you don't like my food, you must not be from here." or "I don't understand why you don't like my food. Maybe you don't like my sauces." I tried to explain to her that the food was NOT fresh and to my pallet, NOT good. She would not listen. I finally stopped her and suggested that as the manager/owner, she should listen to her customers. Still more excuses. Finally, I just said plainly, "The food was BAD. The prices are comparable to the other restaurants in Mebane but the quality of the food is way worse. If you like your Chinese food to be white meat chicken, do not eat here. There were hard chunks in my general tso chicken. I was disgusted. Their "fried rice" is nothing but white rice that's been fried for maybe a nanosecond. No flavor, no veggies or anything mixed in. I picked up food from them, yesterday, for myself and my husband. I bought wonton soup and egg drop with wonton, as well. Neither of us liked the soup, at all. I also bought 2 dinner combos. One Shrimp and Lobster sauce with supposedly fried rice and an egg roll. The rice was yellow, no taste or any veggies in it. The egg roll was put in with the meal, thus completely soggy. It was almost empty inside. I bought another meal with white rice, egg roll and pork with mushrooms. Definitely strange tastes to meals as well as smell. It wreaked of oil that was either spoiled or too old and needed to be replaced. I did notice the smell inside my car, when driving home. Needless to say, we won't be back. We said 10 of each of the 4 they have. Went to pick it up, and after waiting an additional 35 min for it (were told 20, waited almost an hour), I was charged $33.10! Whatever you do..don't eat at this restaurant..Let's go step by step..We arrived on a Saturday in February and ordered soup and Home style tofu. We decided to sit and eat at the restaurant . We were not given any water nor asked if we wanted any. The food came on "paper plates" and plastic forks. The food was greasy not tasty at all. THEN,...I discovered hair in the food. I sawed it to one of the female employees who seem to be in charge and she actually said that it was "Chinese seasoning" and not hair...I am not making this up. I was also told that the tofu which had the hair attached to it , was brought from another company. A male employee even showed me a package of tofu that they purchase. I told them that has nothing to do with the hair in the food and I have been eating tofu for over 40 years and never saw that type of seasoning. I was then told that I ate more then half of the food and I could get a 10% discount or they could give me another order. I told them that I wanted a full refund because of the hair in the food. After some angry looks and grumbling I was given a refund for the Home Style Tofu but not the soup. I have encountered hair in my food before and this is the first time someone actually tried to insult my intelligence and common sense by telling me it was some type of seasoning. Therefore if you are in the area my advice is to eat somewhere else. read more
