My first time trying the place and its great. the good taste much better than the other place near here. it does not taste like too much msg and their fried rice has no meat which is a plus. They also have chicken curry that is delicious. They gave me huge portion, this is my new fav from now on.

If you're hungry and low on funds, you can get a decent sized meal here for about $10. That gets you either Chow Mein or Fried Rice plus two items from their extensive steam table. We've been to low budget all-you-can-eat restaurants with less selection. Don't be confused. You're not paying for award winning gourmet dishes, but it will cure those hunger pains. You will end up with a full belly but don't expect a ton of flavor. I asked for 1/2 & 1/2 Chow Mein and Fried Rice. For my sides, I got Deep Fried Fish and Curry Chicken. The Chicken was chopped pretty fine. The Curry was weak on flavor and heat. The Fish was pretty good. She got Chow Mein, the same Curry Chicken and Pork Spare Ribs in Black Bean Sauce. She said that the ribs were pretty tender and not super fatty. I also ordered a pair of Egg Rolls for $1.80.

There are probably some good things in the buffet of pre cooked items. But my Thai salad was not worth it. No flavor under the tasty chicken. Soda can is 1.50 and the non working soda fountain is 1.25. Whatever the miniscule amount is that is the difference in size of a fountain drink and a can, it's a racket. The egg rolls look crispier than they are. So don't bother. Ask for double dressing is my tip.

It's in the FoodMaxx shopping center. When you see the Dairy Belle Freeze, China Cook is in the plaza behind it. China Cook serves Americanized-Chinese food. They offer different combo sizes and a menu for "cook to order" dishes. The front counter is a steam table with prepared foods. The interior looks a bit old, with cushioned booths and tables. I was there on a Thursday evening after 7pm. I got a Combo B, 2 items + rice/chow mein. I asked for fried rice w/ gourmet ribs and BBQ pork. As expected it was a little dry. My family has been going to China Cook probably for my whole life! I used to walk here after school with my friends in High School and get their bowls. When I was a kid, my favorite was their orange chicken and then it became their teriyaki chicken. Both of those items still hit the spot every time to this day! The teriyaki chicken has such a perfect grilled taste and has the most addicting teriyaki sauce that I could just pour on everything! It's literally my favorite place to go for teriyaki chicken! Other items I love from them is their chow mein and their soups. I looove me a good egg-drop soup. The ladies there are always nice. The prices are a little bit more and portions are a little smaller compared to other chinese foods in the area. read more

In my opinion this is a restaurant Hayward needed. Their food is overall great, especially their fried fish, fried rice, and grilled chicken. Most of the time you will receive a good portion of food. Their prices are also not that bad. I do wish they would upgrade their interior with some lights however. The employees are nice and focused on serving you well. read more

Used to come here years ago. The place is still here. Unfortunately that does not mean the food is still good.. very disappointed with the orange chicken. Both the rice and chow mein were very plain. Also got eggrolls which were more soggy than they were moist. I also had to go back and ask for the sauce for the eggrolls because she forgot to put it in the bag Won't be back read more

I ordered the Combo B. The sides were kung pao chicken which was too spicy and eggplant with tofu which tasted okay. This was with chow mein, but I left that for my kids because I'm low carbing. Not sure if I would go back. read more

The fried rice was served sour already. Only half of what I paid for was OK. Don't recommend them. There's Asia Delight, for example, in San leandro for Chinese fast food. Always lots other locations. But idk how they are these days either. I just called public health for some spots but anyways eat at your own advisory is best. No golden rule to eating outside anymore. China Cook is a good place to go for Chinese fast food. They have reasonable prices and the food taste good given the competition in the area. We usually order the sesame chicken, orange chicken, bbq pork, fried fish and fortune cookies. They are good sized portions and are great for a quick meal to go with home cooked rice. Their other food is mediocre and a bit greasy, so we usually stick to the same choices. The staff is friendly as well. read more

I've been in the bay area for the last nine months and this is the first time that I have really good Chinese food. The portions are generous, the quality is delicious, the food is fresh, the service is fast and friendly, and the prices are very affordable. I get a rice/noodle combo with two items for $6.90. The BBQ pork is so good and the orange chicken is not all breading like at most other places. For another $1.20 I get 2 crab Rangoon (the best I've had in years) or 2 egg rolls. Where else can you get lunch/dinner with enough food for leftovers for around $8? I've already been here twice this week. China Cook is definitely my new favorite Chinese restaurant in the Bay! read more

Was pretty hungry and a bit strapped on cash so i figured it was either McDs or i try China Cook. Honestly China Cook was a very Good Option. I ordered Combo A with Fried Rice and Orange Chicken, Small Egg Drop Soup and a Medium Soda for less than 10 bucks. The Entree portion of the combo was slightly lacking but the soup made up for it. My chicken wasnt hard and the rice had a decent flavor, soup could use a bit more salt but good otherwise. I will definitely be coming back for lunch next time. read more

I happened to be nearby and though I'd usually opt for Hawaiian or boba at Quickly's, but I thought I'd give it a try because why not.‍ And wow. What a mess. The portions are unreasonably priced for their quality and the crab rangoon is so greasy it hurt my teeth. But what really got me was the abomination they called a chicken egg roll. Not a single piece of chicken in sight. Just a bunch of unseasoned, steamed vegetables.I ask the server if it was supposed to be a chicken egg roll. She shrugs me off, "There's a LITTLE chicken in there" The attitude was uncalled for and disrespectful, never mind the false advertising. I won't bother trying anything else from here. I will be reviewing this spot as my expectations of a fastfood chinese spot. Cuz i will never come here for a proper chinese family meal. This places acts more of a togo. Ambience - pretty nice for a takeout chinese spot. Neutral. No comment and the line moves quick for lunch. Quality - I still can tell MSG in it but pretty good spot when i need a quick filling lunch. Why not?!? As long as i dun get dizzy afterwards. I dun like their chow mein or fried rice so i usually get white rice instead. Special bowl is filling me enough. Price - 5$-9$ i believe. Not bad. Depending on what you get. I usually spend less than 6$ here and I am super full afterwards (asian girl tummy size i guess :P) -1 star because I am not hooked to this place. I enjoyed dishes like shiu mai, pork buns, walnut shrimp, fried rice, fish, and fried noodles. The sesame balls were tasty, but the service was slow, and I had to follow up on our order. I didn't care for the bun with the hot dog or the other noodle dish. Later that day, my daughter mentioned she had found hair in a pork bun and that her cousin had eaten it. She also said every item he picked up had hair on it, which was disappointing. I didn't confirm this with my cousin, but it would have been helpful to have someone inform the staff. Fortunately, no one at our table found hair in their food, which was a relief. Overall, the food that I ate was fine, but I wouldn't make a special trip from San Jose to visit again...unless it's a fambam family treat.

If we want it darker, we should steep it longer. We did. That didn't work. Still no tea flavor. She then offered to take it off our tab & walked away. She also informed us other patrons had liked the Jasmine tea. She seemed really angry that we brought the problem of the tea to their attention. For the rest of our dining time, no one approached us. We enjoyed the delicious food but put the tea aside. It wasn't replaced or fixed. It took a while to even get the check. Food is good. Interior design is good. Service needs major improvement.

Beginning with my initial communications to have a birthday there, they sent me a menu. The following day I came to try their food to assess the restaurant and food quality. The restaurant was slow, with a grand opening sign that was weathered by the sun and other outside elements. We sat down, had a few dishes, and was provided complimentary tea which was given to all customers. We also tried their vietnamese egg coffee. The sesame shrimp toast was a crunchy bread, filled with a shrimp paste. The Lomo Saltado was a vietnamese spin on the authentic Peruvian dish, stir fried beef over fries with rice and a sunny side up egg. Overall, food was decent - on the richer side, with lots of seasoning and dressing. Vietnamese egg coffee left a lot to be desired. If you are going for Vietnamese coffee, there are other better contenders - Phin Cafe, Tram Cream Coffee, etc. I asked to speak to the coordinator, regarding the party menu. They said it was an outdated menu, and working on a new menu. When I asked about the items and related prices, they were not able to provide new pricing, and asked that I tell them what items I'd be interested in ordering before providing pricing. That part was extremely frustrating - to determine what to order without having any prices. Their prices ended up being much higher than what this menu even shared. Then on the days following, the person I talked to originally converted all communications to the other manager. Things were consistently not transparent and I had to ask many questions. I didn't feel like they wanted to even answer questions, and there was inconsistencies between what we were told initially. In response to my friend's review (which I did not even knew she wrote until stumbling upon it by accident) that they provided a drawn layout to help visualize the setup, that was NOT something they went above and beyond to do. It was confusing to hear their explanation, so I had request them to grab a piece of paper and he did a very rough drawing for me. Fast forward to the day of, 15 minutes prior to the event, they are still setting up even though we were told everything would be set 30 minutes prior. Food was set up, and presented in catering trays. Everything was fine, however, the hospitality was quite lacking. It was as if they served the food, and now expected everyone to eat and leave, and started the timer. After speaking to many attendees, many people felt like they were being stared at uncomfortably and unwelcome. The cake table which they recommended to be in a certain spot and of smaller size- someone ran into the cake, and that was terrible. They make you sign this contract, but they are still a restaurant and not a venue we are renting out, so set up with basic tables is definitely expected for people to sit. Even regarding the manager's comments on providing the party with complimentary water and tea - they serve walk in customers with this - I'm not sure why a group accommodation would be any different (to even bring this up)? Not only were we charged high overtime fees, hospitality was highly lacking any warmth and I was super disappointed when multiple guests shared how uncomfortable they felt being starred by at staff. The restaurant was clearly slow throughout the whole time, and even after we left and were still outside, only one table was there. The manager's response in saying his customers were confused and left - if that was truly the case, good hospitality would proactively talk to these customers and make them feel welcome. I would not recommend this place for anything more than a pho and takeout establishment.

While steam table Chinese takeout isn't exactly the ultimate in culanary thrills, I know from my own experience that it is a much better option than "the Supersize me" places that dot the sides of our thoroughfares. Being fairly local, China Cook is an easy access stop of convenience and it is a good value for both quantity and over all quality. My favorite dishes there are the Royal Shrimp and their own brand of egg foo young with a generous dollop of their sauce. I recently had a run in with a respiritory infection (flu) and I found out years ago that one of the best cures for colds and the flu is Wor Wonton Soup. This has also become my Gold Standard for rating Chinese Restaurants (After the aroma of the place when first entering - if it smells bad, go elsewhere). In this regards, China Cook is about at the norm but outside of this one fetish of mine, they are a good place to get a quick and fairly healthy dinner for on the go. They feature single item rice bowls to three entree combo's with fried rice (steamed on request) and chow mein. Three stars, but well deserved. The fact that I continue to eat there shows that they can't be too bad. Like Chris, I have seen their prices climb over the last 7 years or so and I would have to say that the Hawaiian Barbeque next door to them (also a bit pricey) is gaining some appeal as an alternative.
