Chef Wang is a renowned chef from China. My favorite dish is the Seafood Double Fried Noodles. It could feed me for 5 days. I ate so much and barely left a dent. You get noodles that are crispy fried on top and tender underneath. It is piled with probably a pound of perfectly cooked shrimp. You also get imitation crab, scallops, pounded flat seasoned chicken, pea pods, tiny corn cobs, carrots and more. I can't say enough about this dish! Its almost painful to write after going here for over 10 years, but I guess after long enough, quality was bound to change. We've been ordering from China Chef for years, always getting delivery, and never had problems. Occasionally the food was a little lower quality but just left it as a bad day. Today after ordering they called us and said they won't deliver to us. When my wife asked them why, they said "the driver doesn't want to drive that far". After picking up the food, I'll be honest and say it was lower quality than normal. More chewy than usual as well. Finally, I will make sure to note for anyone ordering online. I found that the website doesn't take payment but rather gives them the card numbers and they type it in. I found out once when I put the wrong expiration date and they called. I placed an order for delivery before reading all of the negative reviews, so I was expecting a disappointing meal. I placed my online order at 4:05 and much to my surprise it was at my door at 4:45! If I could give zero stars I would. I placed an order for delivery, and two hours (and three phone calls) later the food finally arrived. After an hour an 15 minutes of waiting for my order, I made my first call to the restaurant. I was told my delivery had just left and was on its way; however, I waited 45 minutes before my food (cold) was finally delivered (it's not a 45 minute drive to my house from the restaurant). The person I spoke to on the phone was rude and basically told me I should have just ordered for pickup, begging the question why the restaurant would offer delivery if they didn't want to deliver. My hubby and I tend to go here for lunch brunch. When we leave, we kind of ask each other why we went. So that's not a good sign. I'd probably give it more of a 2.5. The place itself is old inside. It is carpeted (gross-ish) and even the vinyl table covers have rips. But service is kind and pleasant always. The food is ok. This last time, the buffet was not supplied well with food. It wasn't that busy, but they had many empty trays. We normally like the idea of just picking and choosing from lots of different options. But if the bins are empty, there is not as big of a choice. Normally I would say the food is just average and it's convenient for us location wise. But recently we are more and more "meh" about the food. I walked into China chef for the first time in maybe ten years today. I was immediately greeted by a clean and spacious interior with a (presumably) Chinese flair to it. The speakers were quietly playing flute music that set the mood really well. Looking at the nicely sized menu, I decided to order the Garlic pork, chicken Lo mein, and a white Zinfandel wine. Simply put, everything was excellent! The garlic pork had a really nice spice and tangy ness, while the Chicken lo mein was very salty and savory. I wish the chicken had a bit more flavor, but it isn't a deal breaker. The wine on the other was pretty good as well, and complimented the meal nicely. Not to mention the portions were great! Definitely had plenty to take home with me. Overall I was pleasantly surprised, and am proud to say this place might be my favorite Chinese spot at the moment. read more

You cannot find better Chinese food for the price! I'd suggest going closer to when they open, or it can get really full in there. They have extremely quick service when they bring your tea, fill your drink, and clear your plates. Each time I've been there (which was twice a month when I lived in town) the employees have been so helpful and kind. The space is a little tight when you're adding to your plate by the buffet, which is why I suggest getting there early. Street parking. I suggest trying the Crab Rangoon and Honey Chicken! read more

Solid AYCE lunch buffet option in an area of few options. My co-workers and I ventured here after our first choice that day was unexpectedly closed. I remember this building from when I used to work down the block in the early 90's. You would never know it from the current decor, bu this used to be Dick's Finer Foods, a small grocery store built around the butcher department. I'm glad to see that this building has been repurposed. The lunch buffet is three tables in size with one of them being desserts and couple different soups. It may now seem like a lot, but the selection is big enough to satisfy just whatever you might be hungry for. This size also guarantees freshness. This place is pretty popular and the staff does a great job keeping the buffet topped off. The lady said she's worked there 10 years and that those are the only noodles they serve. I told her they were not lo mein noodles. She is not Asian she doesn't know the difference. Lo mein noodles are three times thicker than a spaghetti noodle completely different texture, and a little bit more expensive than regular pasta. HORRIBLE, AWFUL, TERRIBLE experience. If I could rate this zero stars I would.Ordered Garlic Broccoli and Honey Chicken which everyone on yelps seems to rave about. Drove to pick it up and when I got home the honey chicken was so overcooked and dry it was inedible and the garlic broccoli was overly steamed broccoli which was super mushy with some pieces of garlic on top. That's unlike ANY garlic dish I've ever had at any chinese restaurants, it usually comes with a sauce. Completely bland and tasteless. I work pretty close to this place and was dragged there by co-workers on a Friday for the lunch buffet. I had zero expectations going into it because well... I've had Chinese food in China and you just can't top it. I was pleasantly surprised though, enough to order carry-out on the weekends. The China Chef is better than other Chinese places I have been to in Milwaukee. My recommendations are to go for the Empress or Sichuan Chicken and maybe a side order of Asparagus. The dinner combinations, in American Chinese restaurant fashion, are HUGE and served with a side of fried rice and an eggroll. We order 2 dinner combos for 2 people and eat it for 4 or 5 meals - total cost about $18. It would be great if China Chef had more Sichuan food on the menu. I love spicy food and most of the items I've tried at the buffet are pretty mild. I'm sure it's just the chef cooking for the palates in the South Milwaukee area. Someday I'll try and request some spicy fish! I would also love to see the chef give jiao zi, bao zi, jian bing, or even hot pot a try! The service is pretty good and FAST. I live about 6 miles away from the place and order as I'm walking out the door. The food is always ready to go. The lunch buffet gets pretty busy (at least on Friday) because of the close proximity to Bucyrus. Howver, even with the large lunch crowd I've never had to wait. They keep stuff going to the buffet pretty quick. If you are in the South Milwaukee, Oak Creek, Cudahy area I'd give this place a shot. If you are in Northern Milwaukee somewhere I would not make the trip down. You can probably find something similar much closer to home. read more

I judge Chinese restaurants by 1 and only 1 dish. Their sweet and sour shrimp. Unfortunately, China Chef has failed. They supply the run-of-the-mill "ring" of heavily battered shrimp with separate dipping sauce. By the time you get through 2 of them, the breading is soggy on the rest. The red dipping sauce has unidentified black specks in it. The white rice they served was neither fresh nor hot. The egg drop soup was cold by the time we got home - a whole 6 minutes away - so neither my husband nor I touched it. The fried wonton skins that come with the soup tasted like rancid oil. Change your frying oil! My husband got chicken lo mein which was OK. He threw out half of it and complained of a stomach ache the next day. I've had numerous problems with this restaurant. Firstly, I've had items forgotten from my order. Having egg foo young with no gravy is depressing. Having one of the vegetarian dishes completely missing for your wife who can't eat meat isn't a picnic. Not coming back to deliver the missing items, and instead offering to somehow "remember for the next time to give it to [me] for free, because we're too busy to come back" is ridiculous. The quality of the food varies greatly, which is my other complaint. Crab rangoon sometimes comes with just cream cheese in it. Egg rolls sometimes come with only bean sprouts in them. Egg drop soup is sometimes orange (and often comes without the little crisps). And chicken dishes can sometimes be soggy, sometimes be crispy. I've been told "well, we ran out and made due" or "well, that's how it usually is." Delivery is timely, and the food is inexpensive, but the quality and consistency just aren't there for me. read more

However, on this trip, one of the employees pushed a snowblower through the dinningroom as we were ordering, which was somewhat comical to even the waitress. But then proceeded to start it up and rev the engine a few times just feet from our table.
