A fine place for Chinese food. The fried items like sweet and sour and orange chicken are always nice and crispy. Although the Kung Pao was maybe more sauce and less vegetables it was right on the money as far as taste goes. Also, good portion size. Each item easily feeds 2-2.5 people. I almost disregarded this place because of the reviews-that would have been a huge mistake. We loved it! We ordered (take-out) the crab rangoon, pan fried potstickers, honey garlic shrimp and the shrimp lovers platter. Everything was great-especially the sweet and sour shrimp-I didn't even use the sauce! The employees were super friendly and interacted with my 17 month old daughter very well. I went here craving Chinese food and the menu offered a good amount of choices. The restaurant was very clean and relaxing to sit at. My waitress was very attentive and polite. I had to smile when I just read the previous reviews as my experience was the same. The food was decent, but I won't be back because of the lack of service. After I ordered, the teenage waitress's boyfriend showed up and sat at a table halfway nearby. All semblance of service went out the window at that point, as she sat down with him and proceeded to chat with him with her back turned to me. I waved my arms for some chopsticks and chili paste. I might as well have been doing backflips for all she cared. I usually tip 20 percent or higher as long as the service is decent. I went two years without eating at China Cafe. I took my hiatus because after two visits receiving extremely overcooked pasta in my lo mien, I was discouraged and swore it off. A month ago, I phoned in an order for lo mien and explained that I switched my loyalty to the May Palace because of the overcooked pasta. I specifically asked the young lady to please ask the chef to not over cook the pasta and she assured me that she would. When I got to the restaurant, my order wasn't ready and I chatted up an extremely friendly, tall and thin waiter and told him that I was hoping for the best. When I got home, I did not enjoy my lo mien dish at all because the pasta was more overcooked than I had ever experienced. I suspect that if I called back that the proprietor may have taken care of me but I was fed up. I received very good service and inferior, food. If they use dried pasta, it should be al dente and in the unlikely event they use fresh pasta, it should be merely flash-boiled. Five years of eating at the China Cafe and my last three meals were poor at best. We're talking "pasta 101," cooking techniques that any chef trained at the middle school level should be familiar with. I cannot speak to how overcooked their other menu items are but I've always been under the impression that chefs working with a 100,000+ BTU wok had the benefit of keeping their food product flash-cooked to keep it tasty and healthy. My veggies in the dish were soggy and had I wanted to make the trip back to the restaurant, I would have returned it for a refund. Under normal circumstances, my review might seem unfair since I didn't give them the opportunity to fix my problem but I cautioned the young lady when I placed the order and again with the young man when I picked up my dish and it had been the third visit in a row that I had inferior food. I suspect that if I had a lesson or two on their wok as to reaching the ideal smoke-point that any dish that I prepared would be better than what the chef prepares on any given day. I suggest the May Palace on Main Street or the Mongolian Grill on S. Camino Del Rio because there, you can watch the chef prepare your dish. Bottom line is that Durango doesn't have the best selection or quality for Asian cuisine and if anybody's tried the food truck on College, I'd appreciate hearing what you thought of her cooking. Other than the food truck that I haven't tried, I suggest getting a bag of P.F. Chang's Chinese cuisine and an extra chicken breast or four ounce sirloin from the butcher so you can prepare your meal in the comfort of your home at a fraction of the cost of eating out. I had the garlic chicken today and after adding some additional pasta and a chicken breast, it was outstanding. Bag's of P.F. Chang's dinner entrees go on sale at the City Market for $5.99 and with boneless chicken breasts on sale for $1.99/#, you can have the perfect meal for $7.00. There are not a whole lot of positive reviews for this establishment and ironically, there's a review where the customer complained that his food was under cooked. It sounds like whomever prepares their food is totally clueless on the art of mastering outstanding Asian cuisine and should watch a few dozen videos on YouTube to improve their technique. Common sense would dictate that on take away orders that the food is going to carry over cooking when sealing it in the to-go box and I cannot encourage the chef enough as to experimenting with degrees of doneness so to improve the food and maybe get some positive reviews before they drive the restaurant into bankruptcy. Finally, when I was there I cannot stress enough how unappetizing the buffet looked and I find it really hard to believe that the proprietor or the employees can objectively give any of the food a thumbs up rating. I initially gave this place two stars but the more I think about it, it is only worth of one star. I ordered 10 egg rolls to go. I was going to dinner at a friends house and thought egg rolls would be a good app to take. well the first 9 were good then the host of the dinner had the last egg roll, and when she bit into the egg rolls she bit into a piece of broken glass that was inside the egg roll. It was a piece of thick white sharp broken glass. I was horrified and embarrassed because i brought the egg rolls. It didnt not cut her mouth, but thats gross and horrifying. I like like the food alright, but the delivery takes way longer than it should. I ordered food less than a mile from the restaurant, and it took more than the estimated 45 minutes. There is not a delivery service on Durango that takes longer than China Cafe. read more

The service here was terrible. I walked in for dinner with my toddler, and I was barely given any service at all. There were only a couple of other customers, so it can't be blamed on a busy night. I had to pick out my own table, get my own high chair, and walk to the front to get my menu. A waitress never came over, so I went back up to the front to tell the teenage host my order. He in turn told it to the young waitress. A while later she brought water that tasted like bleach. Yuck. When our food finally arrived, it tasted decent, average for Chinese food. When I needed something in the middle of the meal, the waitress was nowhere to be found. I had to walk back to the kitchen, shouting "Hello??" many times. No answer. I finally opened the kitchen door and poked my head in to find some help. A Mexican guy just stared at me, but didn't make any moves to help. I said, "I need some help." He finally poked at the host who was busy pouring drinks, who got the waitress, who was able to answer my question. China Cafe, please hire some real help. It makes a world of a difference. Pity I have to give 1 star-this place deserves negative stars. The worst food ever, my chop suey & mu shu pork was tastless and over the top sweet. Everything they serve is sweet. My potstickers were cold & hard. Called in order, they said food ready for pick up in 35 mins. Showed up 40 mins. later and had to wait 20 minutes while they prepared my order. Asked for manager, she would not give name and she had MAJOR attitude. Could not have cared less we were totally unsatisfied. Sweet, tasteless entrees, cold food, horrendous service, never again. If you want fantastic chinese-go to Mongolian Grill (by Walmart) for quick, clean, happy service & delicious food! read more

meh. I can't say I had terrible service (order for pick-up- never dine-in) or that my food wasn't made right. It's just not good Chinese food. Everything tastes the same, the sauces are all watered down and bland. everything seems to be made from pre-made or frozen ingredients, but just a typical American Chinese food joint run by high school children. But it's really your only choice for run-of-the-mill Chinese take-out in Durango... at least it's reasonably priced. read more

Three things we found good about this restaurant--the iced tea, the server (Maggie), and the patio. The food was--bar none--the worst we've ever eaten in a Chinese restaurant anywhere. Tasteless. We ate about two bites each and left. We gave it a "1" because there was no lower rating. read more
