We got this to go while staying in Durango. The food was so good. We will definitely stopping by again on our next visit.

Dropped in for a late lunch and we all ordered different dishes from the menu. I had the hunan delight with steamed rice which was delicious. The dishes are not oversized and don't come with soup so just keep that in mind also. I did notice a sign on the door stating lunch buffet from 11-2:30. My family had general tso, Mongolian beef, chicken lovers plate and a noodle dish. The noodle dish stated pan fried but had a different textured noodle(crunchy). The chicken lovers plate was two different chicken dishes in one. The dinner dishes come with either steam rice or fried rice which comes in a small bowl on the side. The restaurant was cozy. Our server took our orders, brought the food and then left for delivery. Overall it was good food with portions that are small for a dinner service. Will have to try other places in town to compare prices and food. read more

We really enjoyed the orange chicken with broccoli (chef's recommendation), lo mein, and vegetable tofu soup. Ordered for pick-up and it only took 10 mins to prepare, and our custom requests for added heat were perfectly executed. The ordering website needs to be checked out since i entered all my details to pay and still had to pay upon arrival. Lastly, I would recommend adding an appetizer option for summer rolls for a healthy roll option using rice paper, and possibly salmon skin salad or seaweed salad for other light appetizer options. read more

I grew up in Durango and have eaten at the China cafe a plethora of times. My father is also a frequenter of the establishment. The food is average, however that's not surprising because it's Chinese food in Durango. I have always been a fan of lo mein, veggie fried rice, wontons and egg rolls. The lo mein is decent just lacking flavor, I got into the habit of bringing it home and sprucing it up with my own seasonings and veggies for a quick and easy meal. The fried rice has always been good. The wontons/ rangoon have been a hit or miss over the years. When they are good, they are nice and creamy when they are bad they are old, dry and crumbly. This past visit we ordered veggie pan fried noodles, wontons, egg rolls and Kung pao chicken. The wontons were pretty good and the egg rolls were decent. I was not impressed with the Kung Pao chicken. It lacked flavor and the texture was extremely off putting. There was a minuscule amount of chicken in the dish, which I ended up picking out and eating instead. My dad enjoyed his noodles, which I think is more out of habit then anything so he will still be a customer! Over the years I have seen a plethora of young students usually high schoolers behind the counter, I have always been treated very well there by the staff and appreciate their kindness and willingness to help me. I have never sat down at this restaurant but walking through it to get my to go order I have seen the buffet. Personally I would never eat a buffet, but especially this one. The food always looked tired, sad and old. This establishment would not be on the top of my recommendations for Durango eats. read more

Ordered delivery and it came pretty fast. We actually ordered Sweet and Sour Chicken three nights in a row cause my husband and I loved it so much. They put the fried chicken and sauce in separate containers so it was still nice and crispy when it got here. Generous portion for a decent price. Also love the fact that it was in recyclable plastic containers instead of styrofoam (just dislikes the chances of having that plasticky taste). I understand that restaurants are dealing with the impacts of inflation just as we are, so that's why I continued to be a customer at China Cafe even after they raised their prices to a point that I was thought was over the top. But now the portion sizes are smaller to the point where it's just not even worth it. I ordered the cashew chicken and the amount of chicken was so tiny I could barely even tell there was chicken it. 98% vegetables and cashews. So disappointing. The food at China cafe is pretty good, not the best Chinese food I've ever had, but not bad either. I wish the same could be said for their service. If I were rating the food alone it would be probably be around four stars (more like 3 and a half, but I'd give them that extra half a star) but the two stars you see above take the service at China Cafe into account. My wife stopped by China Cafe on her way home from work to pick up some Chinese food, we're both vegetarian so she ordered Kung Pao Tofu and Szechuan Tofu after tell the waitress that she's vegetarian and asking what was good. She got home and we started eating only to realize the Kung Pao was chicken not tofu. We took it back and told them the problem and the first thing they said was "Let's look at the ticket -- Yeah I wrote down chicken" implying that we ordered chicken not tofu. In my opinion you just don't say that to the customer. They should have fixed the order and quietly looked at their receipts if they wanted to double check something, especially when they just gave meat to a vegetarian. They fixed the order and sent us home with Kung Pao Tofu, and it was pretty good, but it just seemed like such an insult that they would tell us we must have ordered chicken because that's what the receipt said. I'm not saying don't give China Cafe a try, but definitely check your takeout order and maybe be prepared for some sub-par service if something goes wrong. read more

Good customer service and crab rangoons but the fried rice tasted like regular rice and was dry/hard. I had to recook it / add my own water to soften it up. The General Tso's chicken was also unlike any other one I've ever had - unique but not in a good way. It tasted mostly like ketchup. My friend who lives in town recommended me this place though so whatever she orders must be good. I will be trying other places in town before I give them a second chance though. read more

Good Chinese food in Durango and the back patio on the river is a great place to dine. The service was solid, the spring rolls were made fresh and served crispy and hot but not greasy. I had the shrimp in lobster sauce which was good but fairly bland - the creamy lobster sauce was a bit watery but I did not want a spicy dish. My wife had the Hunan delight which was vest tasty - veggies including snow peas with chucked, pork, shrimp and beef is a spicy, but not too hot, sauce. I give the food 3 stars but rate China Cafe as 4 stars because the back patio is awesome read more

Stoped there with the family to eat while visiting Durango.we ordered the sweet and sour chicken and the house noodle stir fry. None of the food was edible.the egg drop soup was like lard and the fried rice was just plain rice.we didn't eat any of it.we throwed it away and went somewhere else.don't make a costly mistake like me go somewhere else. read more

China Cafe is a hidden gem! We were staying downtown and wanted to eat at an unpretentious place within walking distance from our hotel near the train station. After walking down Main Ave, we walked over to the river and along the walk that follows the river. Just past the Main Ave bridge, there is a stairway leading up to the restaurant. They have a GREAT patio overlooking the river, very pleasant atmosphere with the sound of the river. The wait staff are friendly and attentive. The food was cooked well and presented attractively. We had the Orange Peel Chicken, Beef with Broccoli, and fried rice. The portions are generous and prices are reasonable. I highly recommend visiting China Cafe! read more

This review is based off of the two times I gave this restaurant a chance. My first experience wasn't too good because my food was delivered extremely late than the promised time. I waited about two hours and tried to call the manager to see why it was taking so long and all he said was that they were busy and it'll get there when I gets there. But two hours is a very long time for a small city like Durango. The second time I ordered my food was cold. I had to send the food back and I thought maybe it would be taken out of my check or maybe I'd be offered something in compensation for taking a bite of cold food but nothing. I would not recommend this restaurant if you want Chinese food in Durango. read more

China Cafe is the bomb diggity! I am a Hot and Sour soup-aholic and theses guys make a pretty mean hot and sour soup.

WORST SERVICE EVER. Our waitress was very rude and refused to make the drinks we ordered (both which were on the menu!!). She explained that "no one ever orders those so I don't know how to make them." She was also very judgmental (scowling at us for ordering a drink with lunch...) My friend and I just had to laugh at how coarse, unrefined, and curt our waitress was in character. My recommendation is that China Cafe hire staff who understand the concept of "work ethic" and who know how to mix rum and fruit juice (with a smile instead of a grimace). Never coming back... Do not go here for their lunch buffet, it is extremely lacking in quality and selection. It is the smallest stream table I have ever seen, with only 10 choices, and 2 of them are rice and noddles. I have been here for the buffet 3 times now, and usually go by default because I am starving and it is close. No matter when I visit this establishment, half of the entrees need to be restocked as they are usually picked over or totally out. I usually have to go to the counter and ask them to bring some food out. Food quality is lacking, and the kitchen really needs some lessons on how to cook Chinese... They have a great patio setting because it overlooks the Animas River, but you cannot sit outside if you are having the buffet?!?! read more

China Cafe clearly has new owners. I used to get their food all the time when I lived closer to town. Their wonton soup was good then. But something has really changed and it's 10 times better now. I know the difference between pre-bought wontons and handmade wontons. This soup was phenomenal. I can't wait to go back and see what other surprises they have for me. A fine place for Chinese food. The fried items like sweet and sour and orange chicken are always nice and crispy. Although the Kung Pao was maybe more sauce and less vegetables it was right on the money as far as taste goes. Also, good portion size. Each item easily feeds 2-2.5 people. I've only ever done take-out so I can't speak to their service but I've never had any issues. read more
