My low expectations of this restaurant were met with an equally low expirence. I was seated by someone across the the buffet area from me. Pointed to a section and sat myself. Asked me to move to another table when he came for my drink order. They have a good amount of food available. A station for Chinese options, another with fish and various other items and one with more traditional American food. They also have a sushi station adjacent to their serve-yourself sauce bar. One of the best, tastiest, and inexpensive buffets in this area!! The buffet always hot, usually full, and very yummy!! Some of the same popular choices, of our Chinese favorites are always on the buffet, with other little surprises here and there, especially on the dinner buffet, which is priced a little higher than the luncheon buffet!! The owners, and the service personnel, are always kind, and greet customers with a smile, whether we're eating in, or taking out, which I mostly do,... they're always cordial, and wait-staff are quick to help, if needed!! I saw this place had mixed reviews and went in with no expectations. It was a one-and-done experience for me. Almost all of the food on the bar was only slightly warm or room temperature. The crab rangoons were gross and congealed and crab rangoons are one of my favorite foods. Also no one came back to my table to refill my water. Read some reviews and as always decided cheap buffets are always going to be subpar. After a very long day at Canobie we stopped in with a bunch of hungry kids. The tables -!; floors definitely needed a good scrub. Food area was clean tho. Veggies were all very well seasoned and cooked. No mush to be found!! The sushi was fresh and most of the prices I tried were good. Big pieces too nothing was skimpy or little. The bbq bacon chicken was really good, baked seasoned potatoes ARE DELICIOUS and the baked cod was also buttery and flakey. To confirm some items were only warm and not piping hot. Still no one got sick and everyone enjoyed the main dishes. Mac n cheese, fries, chicken all favorites with the kids. Was not a fan of the desserts though. All were previously frozen it appeared. Nothing was good. I tried a little of all and nothing was tasteful. The kids liked the brownies but they were wet. Not my thing at all. I went in with my family to eat dinner and I found a BUG/ some type of fly or spider with visible little legs in my fried shrimp. I told the waiter so he was aware and something could be done. The bug was still under the shrimp skin and my fiancé started to take the shrimp apart to see what it was and waiter quickly snatched the plate up saying "ima tell (who ever he said cause I didn't hear him as he spoke when he walked away)" but I'm assuming he said the cook. Cook comes out and is showing me the poop of the shrimp which just now what it looks like of course so I'm trying to explain to him that it was a BUG IN THERE and he is being so dismissive I ask for the bill he then comes back saying they gave us a 10% discount out of out 41$ bill and somehow bill was 43$ like whatttt anyways will not be going back I hope I didn't eat any other bugs and get sick read more

I enjoy stopping at the China Buffet in Methuen for lunch and dinner to fill up after some power shopping over in tax-free Salem, NH. The buffet selection here is pretty good, which offers the basic Chinese fare, American items (seafood pasta, mashed potatoes), dim sum items, sushi, salads, BBQ grilled items, seafood, shrimp cocktail, crab legs, and desserts (cakes, cookies, fruits, hot apple streudel, and Blue Bunny hard ice cream). Some of the food is very greasy and oily, but tasty and filling. I love the dim sum including those shrimp balls coated with fried noodles, sesame balls, and the bean curd sheets. The service here can be hit or miss. When I'm seated, they take my drink order and then I head over to the buffet. On some visits, my pot of hot tea and water is already at the table and other times, I end up waiting and waiting until I can get their attention. Used dishes are usually cleared between buffet trips. There's also a separate cocktail lounge area with a full bar and Keno. There's also a Mass Lottery scratch ticket machine near the entrance. A surreal dining experience. As soon as I sat down and got a good look around, I had this feeling that I was in an Asian themed buffet in some run-down off the strip casino near Vegas. Ugh. White fried rice, stir fried vegetables (broccoli) and etc. Look carefully you will find a couple of maggots in your food. It blend with chopped garlic or rice. Yes!? Maggots!!!! For a buffet, the selection was great. Three large buffet tables, plus a sushi bar, dessert bar, and cold food bar. The food was hot, full of flavor, and typical for a Chinese buffet. For Chinese, it had all the typical Chinese dishes. It's not gourmet, but it's hot and plentiful. I really loved the cheesy spinach. It's one of my favorite dishes, and they really did a good job! I was inundated with preconceived notions about this place from rumors from locals. I decide to try it and found it to be not bad. Definitely not as bad as I was told. It's your typical Chinese buffet fare done ok. I will do this review in my old "Good, Bad and Ugly" format Good: the first good is actually a GREAT and it's the service. The staff at this buffet is friendly, courteous and appear to works hard to make you visit pleasant. Another good is the regular price of $12.49 for diner and I will say they have a large cold bar with plenty of deserts. Under good I will put the food. The food was OK. The basics for Chinese buffet foods were covered. Not a huge selection for Chinese buffet - but covered. They have three hot lines (plus the large cold/desert area and a separate sushi area) One whole buffet line plus a few other pans seem Dedicated "American" foods which seemed popular with the other diners, so I assume this is why they focus on them. The pork dumplings were good. Bad: the place is dated. Stuck in 1985 and a little dingy (dingy as in old worn NOT dirty). But what do you expect for all you can eat under $15. Another bad was a price jack- up for Presidents' Day. While other businesses are running specials to get holiday bargain shoppers in, these folk decided to raise the price by $1.50 for the same buffet. I first thought when the hand write sign said $13.49 all day on President's Day it meant they had diner buffet (and price) all day - not unheard of on holiday. But, they jacked the regular diner price up. My girlfriend told me when I got back to her house nearby that it a reverse or "backward" sale where they charge more for the same thing. I could of left but decided to stay because I had already came in. I am guessing that what the figure most people would do rather than drive somewhereelse Note: Neither good nor bad to me, I don't drink, but they seem to have a full bar with reasonable drink prices. As far as chinese buffets go, this place rocks. As with pretty much any buffet, the food isn't as good as at a sit-down restaurant where you order off a menu, but as buffet cuisine goes, this is my favorite one in the area (and I'm a bit of a local chinese buffet afficionado; I've been checking them all out this past year+). Criteria #1: selection. This buffet has 3 main food bays + one for fruits, +1 for sushi & mongolian style made to order + a desert and ice cream bar. There's plenty to choose from whether you're carnivorous like me or even if you lean towards dishes with veggies in them. The selection of ice cream is another very nice perk. Whereas most places like this will just have your chocolate, vanilla, etc basic staples, this place often has nice alternatives you wouldn't expect such as rainbow or even just lemon sherbet, and, most importantly, the "Superman" flavor, which is very tasty though I'm still not entirely sure what the flavor is supposed to be. Criteria #2: quality. The food is decent. Practically all of it is just decent and not great, but there are a handful of dishes here that are crave-worthy. Like if you know you're going there for lunch tomorrow you get cravings for your favorite dishes the day before. This is very much the case with this place's Peanut chicken, as well as their barbecue pork & chicken (not barbecue sauce, just nicely cooked and lightly spiced) that's separate from everything else under heat lamps by the sushi. The peanut chicken is really phenomenal and is enough to keep bringing me back here. Criteria #3: health. I've yet to leave this place feeling ill, which is something I can't say about certain other generically named chinese buffets in the area. Criteria #4: value. This buffet is a decent value at around $8 for lunch; all the more-so in that it's in Massachusetts, right on top of the New Hampshire border, so you can reverse border jump as meals tax is actually cheaper in Mass. There are cheaper buffets around, but only by about $1, and this place is worthwhile for the quality as well as its proximity to other perks in the area (namely Bull Moose Music in Salem NH). I'm not sure off the top of my head what it costs for dinner as I've never been. Chinese buffets for dinner are for suckers. A good value, decent food (a few truly good items) and not leaving feeling physically ill may not sound like the best dining experience, but as far as chinese buffets go, it's about the best you can hope for. If not for the horrendous effects it'd surely have on my health, I could eat that peanut chicken every day. read more

Chickety China! It had been over a year since I'd last visited China Buffet, and I had to yelp about the much improved quality of the food! Plenty of selections and plenty of turnover so you're almost always getting fresh food. I chose pineapple chicken, barbecued chicken teriyaki, peanut chicken, vegetable lo mein and crab rangoons. The rangoons have a light crispy wrapper, and a nice mild addition of onion for the meld. The pure winner was the peanut chicken. Fantastic flavor! I'd return just for that alone. Interesting options for a little dessert, such as "biscuits" (basically fried dough), apple pie, sesame balls, and ice cream. My only warning is to be careful if you show up around 3 or 4pm. Make sure you specify with the waiters before you start eating as to what time lunch ends and dinner begins so you are charged appropriately. You might end up keeping $4 in your pocket! read more
