Best Chinese in Methuen. Not the best I've ever had, but after 4 years here it's still my go to. I've tried every other Chinese within like 20 minutes and they're honestly terrible, half of the places aren't even edible. China star always answers by the second ring and food is at my house in less than 25 minutes. Sucks they don't have a website or app, but it's bc the real ones know how good it is and don't need an app. read more

I am from China so I may be biased. The owner is from a city about 100km from where I live in Canton, China. About the distance between Concord, NH and Brockton, MA. The food is great. I ate here twice. Broccoli Beef and General Tso's Chicken were what I had. The beef was good. Very fresh and lots of beef. The General Tso's chicken does not have as much compared with other restaurants, but it tastes about right. It is a typical Chinese takeout restaurant. One last caution: Chinese restaurants in North America are not "real" Chinese food, especially if they are fast food restaurants like China Star. It does not matter if the owner or the cook is Chinese or not, the flavor has been Americanized to suit local taste. If you want to taste "real" Chinese food from China, go to Boston's Chinatown and look for restaurants with big round tables, Chinese language menus and big groups of Chinese people eating there. Like China Pearl Restaurant, or Empire Garden Restaurant. read more

Dim sum was just so so today. Shrimp Chang Fan skin too thick. Syau Mai too many shrimp per piece. Pork ribs had some kind of strange sauce instead of just steamed. Would not recommend for dim sum today. Had double lobster with lobster Cantonese sauce and Peking duck last week for dinner which were both quite good. My 4 year old will pick this place 10 times out of 10 I would've loved to post a before the massacre photo of the food in all its glory but I had to feed the hungry wolves lol My 1 year old in her high chair and my 4 year old boy had worked up an appetite needless to say they were ready to FEAST! I placed the order at 2:16 on Super Bowl Sunday and 2:46 the food was delivered The kids were ecstatic! With no time left to play around I quickly and swiftly opened up the food and the kids instantly dropped their mouths to the floor as they were now in food heaven. This place has the best egg rolls I have ever had in my life. Something about the small location with the more than friendly staff makes me come back more and more. even though I am on a diet and cannot get the "Platter P5" anymore, which for less than $15 get you enough for two full grown adults or 4 small children willing to split the egg rolls, I will still on a sunday get their fried rice and split it with my wife. OK, I have reviewed this place before. D and I have been content using them for take out as there is nothing else we find in the area worth getting from. It was always good up until tonight. Every restaurant is allowed to make a mistake. Something was made wrong or not to the customer's liking then it should be fixed. We have given them enough business over the years that this shouldn't be an issue. One of the dishes ordered was the ginger chicken. When one thinks of ginger chicken one would assume a nice sauce flavored with a strong ginger flavor. This was not that. This was simply ginger. Clearly the cook is new. I call up explaining the situation to not one but three people from the order taker to the manager. I wanted the dish exchanged for something else. The conversation went on for a bit with this lady trying to compare it to beef and broccoli, how I wouldn't be happy if it was just flavored with broccoli. Fair point if ginger was a vegetable. As an executive chef i had no trouble telling her I would be ashamed of myself if I had sent this culinary abortion out to a guest and had the audacity to try and justify it. I told I would drive it back and I want to see her eat it. In the end stubbornness on both sides came to a grinding halt. So as i told her I would put this Yelp up and here it is. I've definitely had better. We ordered General Tso Chicken, Sesame Chicken, pork fried rice, pork dumplings and was given a free szechuan chicken since we ordered more than 25$. The dumplings were good. The General Tso might have been better had they included actual spice and it was way too sweet The sesame chicken might as well have been cooked with high fructose corn syrup. It was so sweet I thought It was supposed to be some crazy Chinese chicken dessert. It was gross. The Szechuan chicken was mostly ok. The pork fried rice was bland. China Star is our go-to place for Chinese takeout. (I wish Lee Chen's in Lawrence delivered, but they don't.) Usual orders include some of the following: Spring Rolls, Beef Teriyaki, Chicken Fingers, Peking Ravioli, Pork Fried Rice, Vegetable Lo Mein, General Gau's Chicken, Chicken Chow Mein, Szechuan Spicy Chicken, Yu Hsiang Chicken, and Stir Fried Spicy Style Chicken. Seems like we favor chicken dishes! Everything has always been good, except... the past few times, our Peking Raviolis have been very, very dry... and even hard to cut through. Don't know what happened with these, as they always used to be great. I feel like they're cooking them ahead of time and just reheating, which dries them out. Still, we continue to order from here; and for the most part, are not disappointed. The best part is that they deliver. Costs a few extra dollars for delivery, plus my normal $5 tip. Rating especially for their Orange Chicken! I was looking for a similar tasting chicken that is available at the Rockingham Mall food court, but for delivery lol. It just has a delicious sweet flavor to it, with a hint a citrus. Their General Tso Chicken is not spicy at all and is more on the sweet/tangy side. I found it similar tasting to the Sesame Chicken. However, I'm not complaining because I got the order of the General Tso Chicken for ONE DOLLAR! I think that's a pretty sweet deal after ordering three large entree. I wasn't particularly fond of their Lo Mein on its own. There isn't much flavor, so make use of that duck sauce. The noodles do seem thicker than other places though, which I didn't mind. Portions are generous, and delivery was timely. PS Why was it so difficult to find a decent Chinese Spot in the 01841 area on Yelp? Lol read more

I just spent 85.00 on food from China star. It was awful. Everything was mushy tough overcooked and tasted old. We called to ask if there was something wrong or they were having any other complaints because the food was not edible. After letting them know how bad our food was they hung up on us. 85.00 in the trash and we will NEVER go back there again. read more

Called to place a delivery takeout order on a Wednesday night. Was told that the order would be delivered in 20 minutes. An HOUR later I began calling to ask where my order was. Was told that it was on the way. Another 15 minutes goes by and still no order. Was told that they called the driver and that he was on his way. A total of FOUR follow up calls later, the food finally arrived. The driver apologized for being late. I asked him if my food was now cold. He replied, "No, hot, hot." LIE!!! Food was cold and every item had to be microwave heated. Called again to complain and was simply told, "Sorry." I called the restaurant and spoke to the owner, a lil Chinese lady which kindly told me she would credit my order next time I ordered.. so far so goo right? WRONG! Couple of weeks later I called to place an order and they said that they had to recollection of ever giving me a credit! Are you kidding me! Beef teriyaki was like chewing on beef jerky, crab rangoon all I can taste with oil, the general Tsao chicken had no flavor, and the Mo goo gai pan chicken was nowhere near soft it was hard to chew. They've done a renovation, and with that improved the menu. Here's the thing. For SOME items - the food is made to order. OTHER items, they make in bulk early in the day and re-heat as they go. Was going here for years and will never return due to this.
