For my money, this is the best restaurant on Martha's Vineyard. The setting is wonderful - eat outdoors under the sparkling lights. Even the adjacent parking lot is scenic. The staff is warm, funny, and just great at their jobs. Delilah is a fantastic hostess that makes every guest feel special. And the food: The burger is perfect but so is the chicken, the fish and chips. I even had a great salade nicoise for one dinner (that's not like me). Save room for the hot fudge sundae and bring your own wine or even liquor of choice for the lime basic cocktail. read more

For the price, there are much better restaurants on the island. The $47. fish & chips were small & over cooked. As opposed to, say, Atria where they give you an entire fresh cod filet perfectly breaded & cooked, for a fraction of the cost. The service is great & they added sound attenuation so the dining room isn't as loud as it used to be, but parking is a huge problem if the market is still opened. Also, BYOB $15. corking fee & they never even came back to fill the glasses. Not cool. read more

This place has huge service problems.The food took an hour and forty minutes to arrive. Waitress and manager both were surly and condescending when we asked why the food was taking so long. Chilmark Tavern is one of the best restaurants on the Vineyard and we make it a duty to stop there at least once during our stay. We have never had a bad meal and this year was no exception we shared appetizers, including musselsurant is BYOB, Caesar salad and smoked fish pate. All we large enough to share and quite delicious. I had the steak which was cooked to perfection with outstanding mashed potatoes. All the others in my party were very happy with their meals. The prices are a little high but you do get bang for your bucks. The restaurant is BYOB. It's always crowded, so make sure you have a reservation and you'll have no reservations about returning! read more

If you're looking for mediocre food, inflated prices, smarmy wait staff, and hidden service fees, then this is the restaurant for you. It was the 9th day of our vacation on MV and until Chilmark Tavern we had great food and service at every restaurant. We were looking forward to dining at the Chilmark Tavern but what a letdown. We were EXTREMELY disappointed. The food is bland, underwhelming, and very overpriced! Fish and chips for $46 - a thin overcooked and unappealing pork chop was $46 - 6 brussel sprouts $15. We ordered these items plus our two companions had equally unappealing and expensive dishes, all ordered from a smarmy waiter who we never saw again because the food was dropped on our table by a condescending group of waitstaff. After that, nobody stopped by our table to see if we were happy with our meals or to see if we needed anything. That is, nobody stopped by until yet another person delivered the bill. Yikes! As if their inflated menu prices weren't enough, they gouge you a little more with the "Kitchen Appreciation fee of 5%". Are you kidding me? By the way, if you decide to try this place anyway and you're seated inside, please know it is very noisy. We could hardly hear each other talking. Dining at Chilmark Tavern was an extremely unsatisfactory experience and I caution everyone against wasting money and time at this place. read more

OVERPRICED, MEDICORE FOOD, SO-SO Service Don't usually review, but in this case we got home after an overpriced meal that left a bad taste in our mouth. Our waitress could definitely up her "people skills" game. Meat that was ordered medium, came out totally rare. The $52 steak (yes, that's the price) was near cold. The biggest insult to injury, there's a BUILT IN 20 percent tip, so it makes sense why the customer service effort made all around was pretty low. read more

The squid Inc. pasta was dry and had such an accurate taste it wa inedible. The $45 skimpy piece of halibut was dry, tasteless and tough. Any worthwhile trip to MV is a mixture of baking on the beach during the day, and fine dining whenever you're not on the water. We heard a lot about Chilmark Tavern, so added it to our "new" things to try on our recent visit. Well...we tried it. I honestly can't understand how this place rates even three stars. One of the other travel sites gives it 4 1/2. Bull. Without a doubt, the most disappointing experience we had during our July week on The Vineyard. I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out why people like this place. To start, it is NOT a tavern. Chilmark is a dry town. There is a bar with no beer, booze or wine...but bring your own and they'll open if for you for $14. They'll rent you a beer glass for $2. It only gets ridiculously more expensive from there. What really amazed me was the number of people in the restaurant with young children. Not a lot, but too many. Who is paying $29 to feed their kid a dried-out piece of chicken? I am truly baffled as to how this place has any positive reviews at all. We had an 8:30 reservation, and when we arrived there was still a long line on the porch waiting to be seated. The hostess offered to uncork our wine and keep it in the fridge while we waited. Yeah...$14 for this. When we were finally escorted into the dining room (aka: ski lodge on President's Day Weekend), we got a four-top in the kitchen traffic pattern. The dining room is exceptionally loud, thus my ski lodge remark. No sound proofing, just a big room crammed with too many tables too close together. You could barely hear each other talk across the table. Our server handed us menus then walked off for 15 minutes. It gave us plenty of time to look at the brief list of entree items, which included a couple of vegan dishes, fresh bluefish, and a locally sourced chicken something. When our server finally re-appeared, two of us ordered the bluefish. That's when we were informed that there was no bluefish tonight. WTF? You couldn't have told us that when you seated us and gave us menus then disappeared for 15 minutes? The substitute for this $42 dish was monk fish, whose only commonality with bluefish is the word "fish." One of us reluctantly settled for the monk fish, two of us tried the fluke instead (meh) and one tried the wonderful-sounding organic free-range hippie chicken. Every one of us was wrong. The chicken was a scrawny breast with a little bit of wing attached. It was as dry as a hockey puck and was reluctantly returned to the kitchen, only to be replaced by a slightly less dry rendition. The only accompaniment was a small pile of salad greens. Remember, this was $29, the cheapest thing on the menu. Our fluke dishes weren't bad. Just basic white fish baked in some stuff. Maybe broiled. Served on a bed of a kind of corn salsa. It was okay, but the portion was small, there were no sides, and this tiny nugget of fish cost nearly $40. I added a side of fried potatoes to my order for an additional $10, and they were honestly the best thing we ate that night. After dinner, our server didn't even bother to ask my wife how her second chicken dish was. He seemed to know not to go there. I truly, honestly don't understand why this place has a waiting list to get in, or why people give it five star reviews. If you like eating hospital food in a ski-resort lodge, this might be your kind of place. It was the low-light of our week on MV, and not one of our party had a good thing to say after we left. Ridiculously expensive even by Vineyard standards. Do yourself a favor, and just go next door and pick up a couple of subs at the general store...you'll save yourself about $300. read more

Important : BYOB....there is no place around to grab a bottle. However, when you bring the Alcohol, they have great mixers. This is added to one of my favorite places on MV! Check out their menu. Diverse, fresh and delicious. Desserts are great as well. They book up quickly so make your reservations in advance. Service is great. Casual attire but men can wear and jacket and still be comfortable. Parking is tight. If you are staying Down Island, go Up early so you can enjoy the ride. read more

On a very busy night we were lucky to get in with some of the other up island restaurants shut down. Halibut was exceptional. One of the best meals I've had recently. Moist, great flavor profile. We ordered the pasta and the tuna dishes. The pasta dish was very good. The tuna dish was phenomenal. The calamari was good. They forgot our bread appetizer but we were still stuffed. So I guess I'm the first review since they got completely new ownership. Came here for our first anniversary dinner. Service was ok... the guy seemed kind of anxious. They were out of mussels (I HATE THAT!!) come on gang, keep up with it. I read the menu online and came there jonesing for mussels. In lieu of that I had the red clam sauce. I will admit, it was delicious, and.. safe to say... best I've ever had in a restaurant. Good on ya. Not as good as MY homemade but I was TOTALLY impressed and have found myself craving it, daily, since. At 24 or so dollars for the dish I find myself more inclined to make said dish at home. But would still recommend. My husband had the calamari and it looked fresh, nicely prepared, nice presentation. Could've been slightly better portioned. The 3 stars though is for a couple of things: restaurant is too loud, we were at a corner table and practically shouting to hear eachother. The bathrooms were a disgrace. Bins overflowing, toilets unflushed, water everywhere... I looked in both, no good. You gots to keep up on that kind of thing. It was a monday night... May possibly have enjoyed myself more if I could've partaken in BYOB, the mixers looked off the chain - but I'm pregnant so... that'll have to wait till next summer. read more

The food was ok, not great, and waaaaay over priced by any standards. The best part was the atmosphere - casual and yet upscale in that country kind of way - and the service, which was very good, but my friends know the wait person, which makes a difference I had a roasted chicken (all the other offerings sounded odd to me) that was a tiny portion with no sides, literally naked on the plate, for $25! My friend had a strange vegan dish that turned out to be a soup that was so spicy that it burned my lip- luckily they took it off the bill -and it was something like $18! We shared very mediocre calamari and an odd hash of some sort with sausage that no one liked. Thankfully I wasn't paying since a friend took me out otherwise I would have been much more annoyed than I was at the prices and portion sizes and quality of the food. This place is fancy, y'all! Up islanders are a staple in this place, as is delicious food. Folks who think this place isn't for kids are totally wrong. Though they don't hand out a kids menu, they do offer a variety of options. We had a party of six and two of them were kiddies who LOVED their meals. I had the scallops which were amaze-balls. Perfectly carmelized and with a great flavor. The rest of the adults had a variety of salads and fresh fish and everyone was really amazed at how awesome the food was. read more

We just were at bubbles & burgers in Edgartown Massachusetts what a great event ! We purchased the tickets ahead of time ! Had a fabulous afternoon at the museum lawn ! The bubbles was Veuve Clicquot champagne ! Omg ! The burger was fabulous Grass fed shoulder beef unbelievable topped with a quail egg homemade pani bread and homemade onions , pickles water crest picked this morning you would not Believe it The master was the head chef at Chilmark tavern ! Tough night. Had come in with high hopes, and left convinced I won't be back. A VERY LOUD space, my party of four was left hunched over the table shouting to be heard. Our young and unprepared waiter spent more time passing his hand through his hair and looking around the room than attending to tables. Our meals arrived nearly 60 minutes after we ordered them, and our model-wannabe took 3 trips from the kitchen to deliver our 4 meals. The place was far from full, as we'd chosen to dine late, so I can't explain the delay, nor the lack of apology. I do fear this inattention to service and self infatuation will become the hallmark of this Up-Island hall. Drive another mile to State Road Rest and be spared the 'dude tude'. read more

the Gals Club returns to Martha's Vineyard and hope to return to Chilmark Tavern for dinner. but ONLY if that insulting (to customers) 'kitchen appreciation' fee is not on the menu. as we wrote previously it seems like the owners should pay their help more and not add that classless charge to the bill. it really cheapens the restaurant and experience in our opinion. or have the waitstaff who seem to make alot of tips at the expensive restaurant tip out the kitchen more. we'll report next week! read more

Lovely atmosphere, a lovely dahlia floral arrangement on the front table and a welcoming greeting were received upon arrival. We were given our choice of 3 tables which was very nice by Jenna and we chose a table in the back corner of the restaurant. We brought a bottle of white wine to enjoy over dinner which our waitress uncorked and put on ice after pouring. Menu was somewhat limited but we understand that typically a more compact menu allows for the chef to shine, so we r psyched! No adds to the menu but understood that they are a week to closing for the season, so all is well. Husband orders the mussels as an app and the scallops as an entree. I order the Caesar salad as my app and the chicken as the main. Bread to start is an add on ($4.00!) if u want it but we decided to forego the carbs and focus on the apps and entrees we ordered. There was a nice bit of time between our wine being poured and the arrival of our apps...and we were able to have some nice chat time and enjoy the ambiance of the Tavern. Mussels were a real win but the salad was terribly overdressed and some of the greens bordered on soggy. Entrees were delivered and the critique was mixed. The scallop risotto was enjoyed for the most part by my husband, but the addition of what seemed to be pickled fennel did not do the dish justice. The risotto itself was perfectly cooked as were the scallops but the pickled addition seemed out of place. My chicken dish was a bit confusing...the chicken breast was somewhat tough to cut (given the silverware) but it was tender to the tooth, which was strange but it did have nice flavor. The puréed carrot was absolutely scrumptious but the addition of the potato gnocchi and marinara on the same dish AND the sunchokes and mushrooms was just way overkill! It was all just too much going on in one plate, but I appreciated the chefs attempt. Dessert was the true highlight of the meal... the brownie (which was more like a flourless chocolate cake) with vanilla ice cream and a crumble which tasted a lot like ground up Oreo cookies. It was truly yummy and delicious! When the bill came we were surprised to see a $14.00 corkage fee for our wine, and although we understand that many restaurants feel the need to charge a corkage fee, $14 seems a bit steep for pulling a cork out of a bottle. It left me wondering what they charged the couple at the next table who brought a bottle with a twist off top!? Bottom line is that the food was mid range, the service and ambiance lovely, but we would probably not return. Dinner totaled out at $143 and we left an appropriate tip for our waitress but the experience did not live up to the expectation where the food was concerned. The place was really full I was a bit nervous after reading Aretha B's review. She seems very lknowledgable... My mussels were great! :) the "fry" main dish was too big for me. It was good. The huuuugeeee shrimps that a friend ordered seemed a bit tasteless... This time the bathroom -we were almost the last customers- was very clean.... 4 Stars. wish the best of luck to them. This was the most mediocre meal for the most money I've had in my life. They have a captive audience and clearly feel no need to provide great food and service. This place is frontin'. What did we order? One steak and mashed potatoes, one hamburger and a side of roasted potatoes, one bottle of mineral water (evil Nestle-owned Pelligrino brand--for all their talk of local this and local that, they could carry a brand that's not owned by Nestle--like Saratoga maybe?). A salad of mixed kale and greens and an order of the frito misto were our apps. Our final bill was $158. I ordered a hamburger--not on the menu--and I ordered it medium rare. It came out medium well and had no flavor. Worst $22 hamburger ever. Waiter checked in quite a bit later and when I told him, of course he asked if I'd like the kitchen to prepare me another. I said no. Truly, the beef was flavorless. Hindsight being 20/20, I wish I had asked to have it taken off my bill. I hate the idea of throwing out food and getting more potentially badly-prepared food. Lesson learned. Hubby's steak was tough and flavorless. Worst $50 steak ever. Seriously, you can go to a chain restaurant and get a better steak than this for about 1/5 the price. I don't mind paying more on the Vineyard, but I mind paying more for crappy food that promises to be fabulous. As others have said, the bread they serve is mediocre. The herb butter was poorly done....I am sure it had local herbs but they were not properly minced and mixed into the butter. Why bother if you don't know what you are doing? Eating long strands of fresh herbs on flavorless bread....um no. Our waiter was nice enough, but inattentive, never to be found. Also, the acoustics are such that we had to repeat ourselves many times, the waiter could not hear us. Is that why my burger was overcooked? Nope, he confirmed that he wrote down "medium rare." Truly baffling that they don't read their yelp reviews. Why not make this place fabulous since you are going to the trouble to run a restaurant in the first place? One guesses they don't give a goddamn. I'm giving the star for the yummy taters (both the mashed potatoes that came with the steak and the roasted potato side dish). The potatoes were fresh, nicely prepared and seasoned. Also, the atmosphere. So half a star each--taters/atmosphere. read more

Went up there on a Tuesday evening and had a great time. They were able to add two to our reservation very easily (originally for 5 but had another couple join us). Had a delicious salad to start and a steak for the entree. Ordered the steak medium but it was more on the medium well side. Still great. Only issue and someone else said it as well was the noise. Had a lovely dinner last night at Chilmark Tavern with my wife. Excellent service, delicious food, a celeb sighting...a very fun night. Of particular note was the side of fries, the steak and the fish. Basically everything we ate was interesting, better than anticipated, perfectly cooked and presented. Although upscale and pricey, able to wear nice t-shirt, shorts and flip flops. MV casual, though certainly some folks got dressed up for an evening out. Highly recommend if you are looking for a very nice evening out in Chilmark. read more

How can you call a place a "tavern" when they serve NO booze? Just crazy. I know it's not their fault that the area is "dry" - but seriously misleading. Food good, extremely busy. But, a glass of wine with dinner would be nice. I could have brought my own- but sad to "trick" the visitors with a name like "tavern" And not serve any alcohol. Beware - buy something in Edgartown before you come and make a reservation or you will end up being bit by Mosquitos for an hour while you wait for a table. read more

Food and service was exceptional . This was our third season to visit here, and every time we come to the Chilmark Tavern is a delightful experience. Menu is small, the food is very fresh, cooked to order and beautifully plated. Corking fee is much less than where we live in Newport, RI area, so we didn't mind at all. Their desserts are very good, also. (Bonus celeb sighting: Bill Murray / Ghostbusters, etc. And he was driving a VW "Thing" - can't remember when I last saw one of those...) read more

There are lots of high end dining choices on the island but we love the Chilmark Tavern. No need to search for parking in Edgartown. Indoor and outdoor dining options. Fish and chips is an amazing choice - it arrived steaming hot and could easily be shared by 2 people. Don't know how the chef prepared the fries but they were the best ever! Different meals for everyone in our party and there were raves all around. Our only regret was we had no room for dessert. Happy to pay a little extra for the kitchen staff who work so hard. Very impressed, reading the reviews going in I was a little on edge, however the food and service quickly put our party of four at ease. APPS: The mussels were some of the best I have ever had, there was a unique smokey taste and great broth. The squid salad and Cesar were also solid. MAIN PLATES: The black bass was simple and delicious, the steak also got great praise from our table, the scallops themselves were perfect but rest of the plate was uninspiring. DESSERT: coffee and tea was great, the sundae looked great but seemed like it was not as cold as ideal, sort of soupy. In general still great. OVERALL: earned the 5 star through great menu staples, solid service and easy going atmosphere. read more

This is a terrific restaurant on an island filled with crappy, overpriced dining options. Yes, it's expensive - everything is here. I maybe pay $25 less a meal for Sharkey's, and trust me, this ain't Sharkey's! This place has amazing food and a great atmosphere with little Ball jars with oil lamps inside on the tables. I love the BYOB option! We shared the ricotta appetizer which was great, and I had the scallops, my husband had the bass. Both were very good. Dessert was the berry rhubarb crisp and chocolate mousse - didn't love the mousse, but it was certainly good. Waitstaff was great. Only beef (literally) is that they ran out of the burgers which I had read many good things about on yelp, so we were disappointed. read more
