What a wonderful lunch at Chilli Crab! From the moment we arrived, the restaurant appeared upscale, spotless, and welcoming. Our server, Allen, was a perfect gentleman and provided friendly, professional service. We began with the pork dumplings and roast pork. Both appetizers were delicious and came with two excellent homemade sauces. My brother's Prawn with XO Sauce lunch special was superb, while my Chicken with Black Bean Sauce was flavorful and equally enjoyable. Being that it is hard to find good Chinese food, we took a little drive to Boca to try this place. Very glad we did. First off, service was very good and the staff was very friendly. It is a cute restaurant with a good vibe inside . The food was was very tasty. Had a little bit of a different flavor profile than other Chinese restaurants, which made it actually quite good. To start we had their honey barbecue ribs, and pan fried dumplings . The ribs were super tender and had an outstanding flavor. What a hidden little gem this was for me. I was glad I checked it out. From the outside this restaurant made an impression on me. It looked cool. I didn't know what cuisine this restaurant served when I first walked in and didn't care. I wanted to be surprised and I knew I was going to like it. I Have mixed feeling about Chili Crab. If you are just going for their diverse "Chinese" menu options I find the prices expensive. Add a few drinks and the tab for a couple can easily reach $150. The ambiance is okay but very loud and the service a bit slow. However their signature dish is Peking Duck. If this is your desire then CC is the right venue and it is possible to moderate the cost of the evening. We were a party of four. We started with soup and/or an appetizer. Then ordered a whole Peking duck ($95) for the table. Plenty of food done this way or order one potion of fried rice to be sure. We had the Peking Duck Sliders, which were absolutely delicious, the duck was crispy with just the right balance of hoisin sauce and soft bao buns. So disappointing and awful. Only one woman there to take orders. She's running around like a chicken without her head on. She tries to upsell you so she won't let anyone else, which is only three kids who are serving the food, take your order. We asked if we could please have our soup before our appetizer and meal. Sure they said, no problem. Everything came out at one time! The corn crab soup is a joke. We were psyched for it and it turned out to be egg drop soup with a couple of kernels of corn in it and smidgen of crab, so tasteless we asked for salt. A lot of people were raving about this place so I gave it a shot. It's Asian food but it's kind of all over the place with their specialties, they have cantonese style lobster and peking duck, but at the same time soupy dumplings and Americanized Chinese food. I went here with a large party and they were accommodating and service was good. The seating and atmosphere was good and it comes off at a fine dining experience, but it's more sit down casual food. It took a very good friend who recently retired to Delray Beach from NY to introduce us to Chili Crab. And am I glad that he raved about how good the food was and made sure that I understood it was not typical Chinese food! And it is anything but typical. First, don't be misled by the name/ Chili Crab. Yes, they do have fresh crabs in a tank, along with fresh live lobster. But they have so much more. So much, that I betcha you'll be coming back after the first time to check more dinner items. So when we entered on a weekday around 5:30, it was empty. We were greeted at the door by Hailey, who advised that we could pick any table. And we did. A couple minutes later our friends Rob and Stef arriveď, excited to see us (as they should be, cause Max creates excitement wherever he goes) Rob quickly ordered a large hot sake and Stef and I shared bottled of large sparkling water at $6. It was icy cold. And with lots of gas. I mention this cause a lot of places don't have their water cold or bubbly and charge too much ($9). Rob started to recommend menu items as he had eaten here before. And we happily accepted all of his recommendations. He also said we shouldn't order too much because the portions were large. Rob is somewhat of an expert on Chinese food, as well as many other foods. His parents immigrated to the USA from Great Britain more than 70 years ago, and they had been engaged in fine food dining and had gained quite a reputation for themselves, especially Rob's Mom Pearl, but that's for another review. So allow me to list what we ordered and how we reacted to each selection. We had appetizers of COCONUT SHRIMP ($16) and CILANTRO SHRIMP DUMPLING ($11). The shrimp was breaded and fried but not greasy. I could have eaten 5 or 6, they are real good. The cilantro shrimp dumpling had a distinct taste and was packed with shrimp. Another excellent choice. Note,!dumplings are a specialty here and you will not be disappointed in eating any of them. We then had CHICKEN GYOZA ($9) and it was prepared unlike any other gyoza that I've tasted. It was wrapped in a very thin pancake, almost cellophane quality. Just. Get. It. You'll. See. How. Delicious. It is. We then had CANTONESE BARBECUE RIBS WITH YUZO HONEY. I found them to be delicious, huge in size, and the honey glazing a distinctive taste. Some at the table thought they were too sweet and also complained that their hands got real dirty as there was no way to eat them other than to pick them up in your hands. I thought they were whiners. Hailey our server gave us each those tiny napkins in a pouch which you use to clean your hands. I hate those things / they are always too wet or too dry, and stink, and one does not fill the need. Recommendation to management is to provide a hot steaming mini washcloth, which would be a nice touch and fit into the higher class feel the owner is creating. Yes, it would be an extra expense for him, but he should take note of my advice. More than 60 years experience in outreach and marketing has provided me with insights into what makes for a successful or failing business which are priceless. And I offer this advice without any fee expectation. We proceed with entrees and had KUNG PO CHICKEN ($25). It was a decent sized serving and tasty but we thought it had way too many cashews than needed. We left most of them behind as they should really provide a distinct taste and crunch and not overwhelm the dish. We then had MALA BEEF PRIME TENDERLOIN ($40) which Hailey had warned us would be very spicy. Rob engaged her in a philosophical discussion on degrees of "heat", as he had the dish before and did not find it hot. She insisted it was and that most people said it was. He insisted it was not. Well we ordered it cause he wanted it. It wasn't too hot at all but I didn't like it cause the beef was tough and I didn't find it to be awesome. We had GAI LAN IN GINGER SAUCE($15) and it was good but you need to have an acquired taste for it as it is mushy and some don't like that mushy taste. Instead of rice we had VEGETARIAN SHANGHAI NOODLE ($14) and it was incredibly good. But I wasn't able to eat as much as I wanted as my husband dogged it. He quietly scooped it onto his plate as others were eating the other items. I'm happy for him as he didn't like the ribs, the gai lan was too much and he doesn't eat meat. So at least let the guy have his noodles! They have a full bar with lots of wine and fancy drinks. Hailey was an excellent server, When leaving we saw blackboard with specials and that she had not said anything about specials. We also met chef and owner ALLEN (I am certain he was not born with that name) who stopped by our table and introduced himself and thanked us for coming. He also recommended we get the roast DUCK next time, one of the specials of the house. Several people in that night ordered it and the pics on line show it as awesome. So, yelpers, check them out. NOTE - If you dont want spicy, ask for chicken broth 2) Peking Duck- lean, Crispy skin, paper thin pancakes. Even though this place has been opened for two years, we finally made our way around to try it! I love the atmosphere of the place but I didn't love the food. I did love the steamed shrimp dumplings - this was probably my favorite! I understand the chef/owner Alan makes them himself. We did order some yummy dishes chicken with black bean sauce (it's not on the menu), but the sauce was too thick (too much cornstarch but I'd be willing to come back over the summer and try out their summer happy hour! Surprisingly authentic and good Asian food at this trendy little restaurant. It's a good mix of different cooking styles from difference regions like Szechuan, Beijing, Singapore and Shanghai. As their name states, they have a variety of ways to cook crab and different types of crab are available. We went to specifically try the Singapore chili crab and it's made with dungeness crab. The taste was very similar to what we had in Singapore. I love the fried mantou (bread) it comes with for you to dip into the delicious sweet and spicy sauce. It's a very unique chili flavor and I have a pretty low tolerance for spice levels but this was perfect for me. The crab itself needs some work to get the meat out and because it's fried, the meat tends to stick onto the shell so it will get messy and time consuming. But have patience, the sauce makes it worth it. We also got a half order of roasted duck. It comes with scallion, cucumber and wraps. The portion is pretty decent and there's plenty of skin and meat. Usually in Beijing, the skin is separated from the meat but here, it's connected. The flavor is good and the meat was tender. The only dry part was the duck leg, the skin and meat was very over roasted. The appetizer we tried was the honey spare ribs. The taste was sweet and savory but the meat was also very dry. Upon a friend's recommendation, Paul and I decided to have dinner here on Saturday night. This is a stand alone building with its own parking lot. The decor is welcoming and cozy with many Asian touches. There is a large screened tv with a Chinese cooking show playing. It was fun and interesting to watch. Our waitress was working very hard to please a lot of people. She explained the menu to us and then we decided to order their signature dishes: the lobster tail with broccoli in a garlic sauce (which had no taste) and the duck with pancakes with the sauce, cucumber and veggie. We were disappointed. We have had this entree before in another Asian restaurant and our server actually sliced the duck in front of us and created the pancakes for us. This meal was over $200 and there were no tablecloths or cloth napkins - not even a placemat. We asked for water several times before we received. I did have a delicious hot sake drink and the corn and crab soup was tasty and hot. Paul's lychee martini could have been tastier though and it was too strong. After eating the lobster tail with our hands, it would have been a nice touch to have a bowl of lemon water and cloths to wash our hands. Our candied banana and ice cream dessert was delicious. This was a very expensive Asian dinner which had its pluses and minuses. Chili Crab is located in a spot where restaurants come and go. The signage doesn't reflect the elegance inside, where the service and menu are elevated from any other Chinese cuisine in the area. You will not find combo platters or the typical eggroll, or sweet and sour dishes. Here, your palate will get to savor freshly prepared crab, lobster, homemade dumplings, and, of course, Peking Duck. Our waitress, Dee, was terrific. She explained the dishes with knowledge and a big smile. She stuck around for a little conversation, but nothing that would constitute too long. We started with jasmine tea. We loved the floral notes. We then had the dim sum platter. The dumplings and shui mai were homemade with thin skin and stuffed with shrimp or chicken, or pork. The dish came with dumpling sauce and hot chili oil. Both sauces complemented the lovely appetizer. We then had a whole duck to share for 3. Natural accompaniments came, such as hoisin sauce, slivers of scallion, and cucumber. They also brought homemade pancakes. They were several notches above most Chinese pancakes. They were slightly thicker, which we enjoyed thoroughly. The meat was plentiful, soft, buttery, and moist, while the duck skin was crackling and crispy. We loved the dish. Alongside the duck, we ordered shrimp fried rice without curry. It was excellent and chock full of tender shrimp, onion, peas, and carrots. A standout was the banana dessert; crispy fried banana with a crunchy, almost caramel sugar coating with strawberry ice cream (they were out of vanilla) and sliced berries. Wow. This place is a four star plus. Service was good and friendly. The gal who served us was just starting and learning. We ordered from the lunch section of their menu. We got 2 different items and shared. Their duck "sliders" were absolutely wonderful!! If you like Peking duck, you'll love these. And you'll also know how expensive it is to order now. This dish is worth every penny. And if you're lucky, your dining companion will share. It's served in a bento box with sections: 4 soft bao buns; crispy skinned duck pieces; slivers of scallions; julienned cucumbers; and hoisin sauce. You build your own bao by putting in a bit of everything and wrapping it up. Yum. We made the bao go further by ripping them in half, but there was still duck left over to dip in the hoisin and eat by itself. The other dish was good, but a bit plain. It was pan fried noodles with grouper. Luckily the owner had brought over some house made chili sauce to give it some pizzazz. The thin noodles are more than crispy. If you eat the ones on the bottom of the dish, you'll get them softened by the sauce and they're easier to eat. In addition to the steamed fish, there's broccoli, red and yellow and green peppers, celery, and bok choy. They have been open about three months, but according to the owner just received their outside sign. Located on the corner of Dixie and Glades, the separate building has their own parking.
