Half a chicken, served stone cold with a beer and greasy fries. Cost £22. Cross the street and go to Banners or Monkeynuts instead.

The latter, for example, did in my opinion not live up to the hype that they'd generated. (Good PR, but no substance really.) Chicken Shop was another place where I'd heard so much about and so I finally had to give it a try. It was a Thursday evening and we were quite early and so ended up getting a seat right away. (20 minutes later, there had already formed a substantial queue.) It was just the two of us and we chose to be seated at the bar. In fact, this is what I'd recommend to everyone, as you can watch how the chicken get grilled, chopped up and sent off to their respective "owners". What really convinced me of this place is the chicken, which was perfectly marinated, juicy, charred to perfection...and the sides and condiments that came along with it, were complementing it nicely. I have to say, it's not cheap, as you order the chicken and the sides separately, but then again the taste is worth it. I also really liked the decor and I felt super comfortable. Somebody had really thought about how to turn a dark basement into a livable and exciting space. (It's definitely part of the hipster family, but that's alright ;-) On top of that, I thought our waitress was just too sweet and so my overall experience was very positive. I can, however, see that this might not be the perfect place to hang out with a large group. It gets really crowded and so the staff might be quite keen to get you in and out of the establishment as soon as possible. My recommendation: go to the Southampton Arms about 300 yards away. It's a very cozy pub. Tip: If you live nearby, order the chicken to take-away and enjoy it from the comfort of your sofa! Beware to not drip the juices on the fabric though ;-)

Succulent rotisserie chicken is their specialty and it's so tender it will fall off the bone. Packed with flavour. Fried chicken sandwich was not the healthiest but very tasty. Lastly I had to try the chicken wings, sweet not hot. Juicy perfection! They have all the standard sides. We had the corn on the cob, which was good but needed some butter and salt. Fries were ok but crinkle cut is my least favorite. The star is chicken and it shines! Casual ambiance, and gets crowded during the dinner rush. Takeaway is a popular option as they were flying bags out the door. Sit at the counter if you want a view of the kitchen and all the roasted goodness. A trendy, hip spot that won't break the bank for a delicious meal.

You know you want to! "There's a party goin' on right here..." OK OK, sorry. I'm just overcome with excitement. I've lived in Holloway for 10 years - in that time, I've seen the opening, closure and re-opening of a hundred different pound shops, the invasion of greasy takeaways and worst of all, The Gaff being replaced by a Costa. It's about time something good happened to Holloway and I couldn't be more pleased that Chicks on Fire have joined the 'hood. The food is simply outstanding and everything is made fresh to order. Their specialty is the fantastic chicken (choose from 3 marinades and a variety of portion sizes). I can't remember exactly how it's cooked (it's explained on the menu) but I think there's a combination of steaming and grilling involved, leaving you with juicy, tender meat and a gorgeous crispy skin - exactly how it should be! VEGETARIANS, reprezent! There's an excellent selection for you too from delicious falafels wraps, stuffed pastries, hearty salads and a fantastic mezze selection. Oh my god, those dips and that guacamole! My veggie partner was over the moon. Not to mention all the side dishes like buttery corn on the cob that pops in your mouth, rice and beans and the almost holy triple cooked chips (done the proper way, thankyouverymuch). If you're eating in, everything is served on big slate trays and it looks as great as it tastes. You can also choose from a variety of different sharing platters and they do takeaway too. Chicks on Fire is far better than any of these 'trendy' chicken joints popping up across the capital - the prices are much more reasonable (I couldn't believe how cheap our bill was) and you don't have to eat in the company of annoying foodie scenesters who witter on about the nduja stew they had at a supperclub in a converted toilet in Peckham (it's the new Dalston, yah), as they twiddle their handlebar moustaches. The staff are lovely too and are clearly passionate about what they do. The first time we went, we ended up going back the next night for takeaway! Don't chicken out, say bye-bye to paltry poultry, show your support for this great little place, or I'll give you a good grillin'!

THIS REVIEW IS OF THE QUALITY OF FOOD ALONE!!! I am actually from western NY, within 50 miles of where Buffalo Wings became famous and every western New Yorker knows a good chicken wing and I have only ever found one place in the UK with good enough wings for them to remind me if home... But now I've found another!!! I've been seeing this business prepare for opening over the last few wings and when I realised it was an American Wing Restaurant I was so excited as it's right on my way home! The chicken wings were the right size, had the right crisp and succulence and the buffalo bliss sauce was reminiscent of the Anchor Bar(birthplace of buffalo wings) itself. I was given 5 wings and wedges in what I believe will be one of the menu items. It didn't come with Bleu cheese as standard (which might have been for the pre-opening event..idk) , but I didn't ask for it so I will make sure to do so next time. It did come with coleslaw, though...which I didn't really see the point of, lol! Oh yeah hey have burgers and per menu items, I'll unlikely be trying these soon as wings are now so close to home. Anyway, the opening is on the 5th of November and there is 20% off so I will most certainly be there to get some good wings again.., eventually when they are fully trained, I will update this on service too!

When walking over to Chicken Shop, I came past Megan's and was shocked to find out they were closing this branch. I have only once been to Megan's in St. John's Wood, but thought it was a very welcome addition to the area. Unfortunately, it is no more. But now there is a new Chicken Shop branch just around the corner. Chicken Shop is a modern restaurant chain that currently expands and opens new branches in different parts of London. The shop in St. John's Wood is light with a big window front and a beautiful, simple design. I was wondering about how busy they were on a Saturday afternoon, even more as they just opened. Since the chicken restaurant a bit further down across the road had closed down some time ago, perhaps they simply got here at the right time. The place is bigger than it looks at first. I was given the option and decided to sit in the front room facing the window, not the area at the back nearer to the kitchen. The design is modern and the dark wood creates a nice and warm setting. The music is kind of loud, but as this still is a fast food place, I think it is acceptable and I did not really get too annoyed by it. Ordering is simple, because chicken shop does not have an extensive menu. You can basically only choose between different sizes of chicken from the spit. To leave space for the dessert - recommended by my lovely waitress - I ordered a quarter chicken. When asked for my preference, I opted for breast meat. I did not have to wait long until my pile of juicy, tasty chicken arrived together with golden, crispy crinkle-cut fries. While the chicken on the bone was delightful with a good crust, the fries were even better. They could only have been improved with more interesting seasoning, but as far as frying goes, those chips are perfect. When I asked for the deep-filled apple pie for dessert, I was surprised when this guy turned up at my table with a whole, hot apple pie. He cut out a good-sized piece for me and I greatly enjoyed it with a jug of cream. It was piping hot and full of apple flavours. Chicken Shop in St. John's Wood is now most likely the best place for a piece of chicken in NW8. The staff are very friendly and the restaurant is clean with a modern yet warm atmosphere. Yes, the chicken is delicious, but the chips alone are worth a visit.

Pepe's has been open for a week or two and as I found out it is part of of a larger chain that appears to have started in Brick Lane. The concept is similar to that of KFC but with the option of grilled spicy chicken. The decor and service are both similar though, perhaps through novelty, it feels a little more upmarket. The service was good and the value reasonable with a family meal at £10 which includes three grilled pieces, three wings (which we substituted for corn) and two portions of chips. Although my father did like the food I found it just too greasy. A gimmick of the shop is that you can add spiciness levels but they seem to do this by adding an oily sauce which leaves a rather nasty residue on what is a well cooked tender chicken. As we had asked for the chicken grilled the grease was even less welcome than usual. The oil did not end there, the corn was so greased that we could not even hold it to cut it into portions while the chips were merely adequate. Overall the food was ok but not somewhere I'd be going back to. There really are other better options such as 'Chicken Shop' or 'Chicks on Fire' in the vicinity that also offer value especially the latter.
