What can you say about the traditional Olde English "Fish and Chips"? Always the same? The same old stuff? It's had its day? They only do one thing? Perhaps The golden fish is worth a visit then? As the privious reviewer has said the golden fish has officially been voted the best fish and ship shop in Britain, and with good reason. Yes, it's traditional, and has a friendly and inviting atmosphere. When I visited the staff were very friendly with my Dad and had an excellent rapport with all the customers. We sat down in a booth; and ordered our fish and chips. My Dad had plaice and I had cod. We waited about 10 minutes and everything was piping hot. I don't know what they put into the batter but it was delcious and crispy, the chips were just as good too. The prices were very reasonable the plaice and chips (as of today) were £6.95 and my medium cod and chips were £7.99. Not including drinks. I believe the prices are cheaper to take away. They do have a range of fish and chips, not only the cod and chips that everyone seems to have. They also sell rock, cod roe, skate and haddock....Along with the old favourites of saveloy, pies (of various types), chicken and sausage rolls. There's room for about 30 people to sit and eat in the restaurant, but they do supply a take away menu too. I'm posting some pictures of the inside, our food and the menu for poeple to take a look. So in my opinion this is some of the best fish and chips around, and has been voted the best in the country! I have always finished my meal feeling full which is more than can be said for most big name fast food chains. It can get busy on Friday and Saturday nights and you might have to queue for a few minutes to be served but it's not really much of an inconvenience. Parking is available a few yards away in the street meaning that you can ensure your visit is quick and easy.

When I got to my hotel, I asked the man who checked me in for a recommendation of a good place to eat, so I responded to him with a question. I asked him if he were not working right now, and were out with his mates, where would he choose to eat? He looked at me with big eyes and asked really? I told him emphatically yes! He asked me if there was any food I didn't like, and I told him if I ever missed food, I didn't understand the question. So he told me to try this place, and asked if I was OK to go for a little walk. I was happy to. When I walked into this place I found it to be a corner neighborhood, fish and chip shop and it was very busy. To me this is a very good sign. I got there about 6:30, and I got desk clerk friend recommended, which was the fried sausage with chips and some curry sauce. I also added a cod fillet because I wanted to try the fish as well. The curry sauce and the sausage together were amazing! Oh, did I mention that the curry sauce was amazing?! Oh ya, I already told you how amazing the curry sauce was!! The fish was very good as well, the chips were spot on, and the curry sauce lifted everything on the plate to a new level for me. The curry sauce was nice and spicy and had a very full and rich flavor. As I sat and ate my meal, the place continued to bustle with people coming and going taking away food, and a few people sat down and ate as well. There are only a few tables in the place but they were all full the entire time I ate there and they must've served a dozen customers during the time that I ate. This place gets full marks for friendly service, smiling faces, EXCELLENT food, and all around great experience. Thank you for a wonderful meal. It is definitely a neighborhood staple and has a quaint ambience. A little out of the way for most casual eaters but if you want a delicious sausage, with curry sauce, look no further!
