I've visited The Champion a few times, and feel comfortable reviewing it. Located on a corner where…read moreBayswater road transmogrifies into Notting Hill Gate, it is the sort of classic pub that Britain is famous for (though they are closing at a rate of 10,000/year, so who knows how long that shall be the case). It has classic dark wood ambience inside, and a small patio out the back of the basement (apparently Queen's lead singer used to be a regular, so this is named the Mercury Bar) Food is ok. Maybe 1 cut below top-tier pub food. Scotch egg was a tad runny, and served with Oxford sauce that is more sour and less good than the HP Brown Sauce it replaces. Lamb Sunday Roast was a bit tough, and came with a paltry 4 roast potato segments of diminutive size. Service is excellent; consistently friendly and helpful. They are eager to fix things when matters go awry. The pub was recently closed for renovations, which seems mainly to have been making a new, larger Gents in the basement, and turning the old Gents' into a 2nd Ladies' room on the staircase. Fellow patrons seem to come more for drinks than food. I like this place, and I'll be back.

One eventually came to our table after sitting awhile. I of course had to try the fish n chips. A couple of veggie burgers were ordered and a regular burger. Surprisingly happy hour was still on at 8 o'clock so drinks were ordered. The food all came at the same time and everything was cool. The fish had a nice flavor from the fried batter. To me it was similar to Long John Silvers as far as the batter is concerned, but slightly better quality overall. The fries were standard. The only thing horrible was the very bland mashed green peas. They should be omitted from every pub across the country, but I think it is a traditional item included with the fish. The cocktails were good as well as the price. The sticky toffee pudding was something else I was advised to try while in London. I must admit it was really delicious. It came with a scoop of ginger ice cream and a warm buttery toffee sauce to pour over. It was delightfully warm and sweet and paired well with the ice cream. The cake itself was moist enough on its own with notes of brown sugar and molasses. I could have had seconds and thirds of this desert. Yum! The majority of my party didn't think the food was fantastic. The burgers happened to be somewhat alright. This was a first for me having pub food and I would have more again as long as I stick to the basics.

We ordered the cod fish and chips as well as an order of onion rings. The onions were battered in a flaky crust and the onions themselves were quite sweet. Overall an incredible onion ring given the cost, freshness, and quantity you receive. Now, onto the fish. The cod was incredibly flaky and the crust enhanced the flavor really well. The chips were alright, not my favorite, but the cod was the real star of the show. Overall, I was able to have the British fish and chips experience and have it well. If you are looking for a great place to eat that's not too far from the main city, look no further than here!

The staff is attentive and efficient. They answered our tourist questions with enthusiasm. I ordered cod F&C while my wife ordered haddock. Both were served very fresh and hot. The batter is crispy and light. These fish are not encased in an inch thick mass of greasy batter but are lightly coated with something that means more towards a good tempura crust. More substantial than tempura but in that quartile. I tasted both of our fish selections and enjoyed each. The cod is a bit more tender and the haddock has a slightly firmer texture. Really well done and the house tartar sauce really puts a nice finish on it. The chips/fries are also good. I like the American light crispy outside with a soft inside variety of potato fries, which is not what Hobson does. They serve Brit style which are a little more firm skinned. Still very good with either the ketchup or vinegar and salt. I'd come here again, especially for the fish part of the meal.

We specifically came to try fish and chips, so we were lucky that The Mall Tavern was nearby. Each of us ordered fish and chips, and all of our plates were left nearly empty. My goodness, I have never had better fish and chips than here at The Mall Tavern. The fish was crispy, and the chips were perfectly salted to taste. I appreciate that chips in England are more like potato wedges than classic American french fries. Way less fried and way less salty, so you can enjoy the actual taste of the potatoes! I also ordered a side of Mac and cheese that we all shared. I don't know what kind of cheese(s) was used, but it was the perfect starter to our meal. For dessert, we had the sticky toffee pudding for the first time. It was hard not to order another one!! We came in for late lunch, so the restaurant was empty. I assume they are much busier at lunch and dinner time. I also enjoyed the selection of beer while we waited for our food to come out. Next time I'm in London, I'm returning here immediately.

It was the last dinner we had during our most recent trip to London, two weeks ago! It was a great way to end the trip We placed a reservation for dinner and ate there before seeing play that night. We would have stayed longer if the play wasn't starting soon after. The place has a great ambience. We quickly noticed how Ffiona treats her guest with care and kindness upon arrival. I let Ffiona know about not having dairy in my meals and she was clear on what could be adapted to not have dairy and which items to avoid completely. We truly enjoyed everything we ate, and had to be careful not to stuff ourselves. We had the sheppards pie, fish and chips, aubergine fritters, a tasty salad with some vegan cheese and a couple of desserts. They some great drink options too! We had a mocktail. Ffiona communicated that there was optional service charge that could be removed upon request before we even presented our card for payment. We did not have it removed due to the great service we recieved. Next time we are in London, we will surely make a visit here.
