This has been a beloved family gem since I was a kid. We'd always stop here for some fresh fried chicken or fish. It's a memory I'll never forget. They have 2 different locations that I'm aware of. I've been to both a dozen times over the years. The chicken wings are seasoned well and fried to perfection. I tried the fried cod fish recently and was impressed by the size and flavor. I enjoyed my meal each time. They 1st opened in 1966 and with no updates since then, you still get that same old time feeling going inside. This location has a dine in area, whereas the other one does not. They have mainly fish and chicken with a few sides you can order. I got some fried okra which was okay. They don't sprinkle the lemon pepper season here. I forgot to ask if they have it but my food was good enough without it. The fountain drink station is old and needs to be updated. It took a minute for my water to trickle out the machine into my cup, but I was patient enough to wait for it considering how hot it is outside. I asked for tarter side for my fish but was disappointed to get the small to go packs. It would have been nice to get some fresh home made sauce. I'm not sure why I expected that. I threw the packs away and enjoyed the fish by itself. I'm sure when I'll be back, since it's on the opposite end of the state, but I'll be back for sure. read more

This is the 2nd time in 3 weeks that we have tried to order fish from this place. Both times we got there and they say the original battered fish is frozen. The 2nd time (tonight) was after I called 30 minutes before getting there and they said they had it. So I ordered a 12 piece bucket of chicken instead. I paid and then waited 15 minutes for my order. While handing it out to me they said they were out of chicken breasts and could throw some thighs or legs in there. I opted for legs and the woman said she'd put some extra in there. She put 1 extra leg in the box and all of the legs were the size of a BIC LIGHTER! I've seen bigger legs on PARROTS! For the past 2 months I have had nothing but problems with this place. We used to purchase fish there every Friday. Not any more! If they would have told me when ordering that they didn't have chicken breasts (after they told me their regular battered fish was FROZEN) I could have went a town over and ordered some KFC! Unfortunately I must say this place was not up to my expectations. Was driving from Detroit to Chicago and needed gas and dinner. Their menu on drive through was changed to black out prices. Gal at window had no idea, that should have been first sign of problems. I ordered two piece chicken with one side, white meat. They had no wings and asked if I wanted to sub either thigh or leg. In my opinion if they are out they should have offered an extra breast without upcharge. I chose thigh which I sort of enjoy but despise legs. When I pulled out to buy gas decided to eat in parking lot. I couldn't believe they subbed a leg. I could have gone back but chicken looked so greasy I took one bite and threw out. Baked beans were pretty good and they have nerve to put date stamp on lid, mine was almost a week in future. Really customers can stuck with week old Baked beans, btw beans did taste ok. Keep in mind that it was late on a Thursday night when I stopped for a bucket of chicken dinner. So they were out of dark meat and they offered to do an all white meat bucket of breasts and wings. The chicken was delicious and the lightly breaded strips were also very good. I also had to get some smelt, it's something I enjoy and it is hard to find. The best deal is the day old frozen chicken. I'm so disappointed, for the third time, so I will not be returning. Tonight I ordered an 8-piece chicken bucket. The breasts were overdone and so chewy that the meat went to the dog. They were terrible. On two other occasions, the fish dinner was so overdone and so thin the fish had disintegrated! I complained and returned to the counter with them,, and the staff made me 2 additional pieces that weren't much better so I just gave up. The chicken I ordered prior to the fish was also overcooked. Three strikes you're out. The cooks need to know that their cooking oil is was too hot and during peak times they cook too many pieces at once. I know the rush hours are hard to manage but I'd rather wait longer to have chicken cooked right than to drive 10 miles home to have chicken I can't eat. Best chicken I've ever had. Best restaurant in Watervliet. The service varies on who's shift it is however. When they run out of utensils they get pretty ride about it, as if it was our fault. This isn't a good chicken coop anymore, back in the 90's - early/mid 2000's this place was incredible. Now It's just inedible. I will literally never return. Keep in mind, this is during lunch hours, I didn't show up during some random late night lull in service. The staff is extremely rude, unfriendly and argumentative for no reason. Maybe it's different when other people are working, but during my last visit I had an encounter with a very crabby old woman who didn't like an questions. Yeech. The restaurant itself feels older than it should, feels extremely unclean, and just a general feeling of 'botulism'. Against my better judgement. I decided to stay and at least give it a chance. This ended up being a mistake. I decided to try quite a number of things, mostly for review purposes. But the thing that stuck out most as awful (Aside from everything) was the clams. Far from fresh, tasted out of date, cooked to the consistency of a leather boot. The chicken itself felt the same. Dry, overly greasy, old, leather boot. The potatoes were straight up inedible. The coleslaw tasted spoiled. This is one of the very few times I actually didn't finish my meal at a restaurant and opted for the taco bell next door instead. Even the drinks tasted a bit off, and were flat! There is NOTHING good about this place. If they fire some of the crabby old women (or at least tell them to have an attitude adjustment.), clean the place up, and get better food. I will very gladly give this place a try once again and potentially even change my review. But as it stands? There is not one redeeming quality about this place. Our favorite place to get fried chicken. We don't often eat there, usually just pick it up and take it home. There is generally a wait for chicken, as they are always busy when I am there, doesn't seem to matter what time it is... You should know up front, this is not a "spiced" chicken like KFC or Popeyes or anything... It is a plain fried chicken, but nice and crispy! As others have mentioned, the service attitude can vary a little, but I am not easily offended and don't need to be treated like a prince when I am picking up fried chicken. The place is definitely a dive and well outdated, the look is a little dirty but an update remodel would help with that. So I ordered my food and it took forever to get, the customer just before me got their food and left when one of them noticed they forgot to give that customer some of their food, they was able to stop him from leaving and gave him his food )that would of made me super mad to pay for something and then get it home to find I didn't have everything). So got our food and left, the parking lot had many deep potholes so drive carefully. Got to our hotel and the food was piping hot (awesome) as far as taste goes it was ok, but for the price it was not good and was super super super greasy! It could have used some more drain time. I make a decision to grab myself a 3 pc Fish basket today... and 1. for the price of $7.40 I expected that I would at the very least have more than 3 1/2 pieces of fish, and 13 fries. yes.. I counted them! I was asked if I wanted regular or "lightly" breaded fish.. REGULAR OF COURSE! this is what made me love it in the first place. Sadly.. this certainly isn't your regular batter. The young man taking the order and taking my money and giving me the order.. never said, HELLO, Thank you.. " would you like tar tar" NOTHING. other than "OH" when I asked for vinegar, he said tar tar was in the bag. NO utensils.. I've watched the quality of your once great service go down, so I only use the drive thru now... because the food still remained ok.. well.. after today, I just will never spend money here again. AWFUL! Never-NEVER again!....Major waste of $$$! 1st of all OVER charged $5.00! (( I could understand some mistakes...if the place was busy!
