**Soft Opening Review**
When we first walked into Chicago Sushi we were quickly and cheerfully greeted by the chefs behind the counter. We have never been to a soft opening of a restaurant so we didn't know what to expect.
Parking: 3 out of 5
At the time we went (6:30ish pm) we found a spot immediately. There are limited parking spaces since it's in a strip mall and also shares spaces with the very popular Chicago Ramen next door.
Ambiance: 4 out of 5
Since it was a soft open not many patrons were inside so it was fairly quiet except for the music playing and soft bussle of the work being done behind the counter. We were greeted immediately and were directed to take a seat wherever we would like. Decor was on theme and nothing really stood out as particularly 'off'. Space was a bit limited so I expect waits and space to dwindle the busier the place gets.
Food: 3.5 out of 5
Typically whenever we visit a new place we try to get a little bit of everything so listed is what we tried. At the time of this review, we were handed an order sheet to fill out and hand to our server whenever we were done selecting what we wanted. The structure of the menu was a bit confusing but hopefully the descriptions of what we got can help you order.
- 4 Piece Hand Roll Sushi - 4 out of 5
Having never had this kind of sushi we didn't exactly know how it all worked. When you look at the menu, you can order via a combo order (3 rolls / 4 rolls / 5 roll) or individually. When you order by combo, you get one of each flavor of hand roll listed in the box. For us we got the 4 rolls (Salmon / Spicy Tuna / Imitation Crab / Shrimp). Each roll was about 4 inches in length and we're filled with warm sushi rice, protein, and additional ingredients all wrapped upon order by the chefs behind the counter in dried seaweed. Since we sat at the bar, they placed the hand roll on the wooden serving block on top of the bar after telling you what flavor you are getting. We weren't sure if this was proper etiquette, but we said 'thank you' after every presentation and ate the roll right away. Each roll was made upon order so if you ordered as a couple or a group each person will most likely have to wait until the chef rolls sushi for you when it's your turn. Each roll we received was delicious! We didn't expect the rice to be warm but it was a welcome surprise. The fish was fresh and the additional flavor ingredients pair perfectly with each protein. We should note that these rolls are about 2-3 bites a piece for a normal person and it a bit odd to try to dip it into your provided soy sauce bowl. Regardless, would definitely come back and get these hand rolls again, especially the shrimp (tempura) one. Would have been nice to get some descriptions on each roll though so we would have an idea on what we were eating.
- Chirashi Sushi (Matsu) - 3 out of 5
Also a new experience for us so we didn't know what to expect. Our server told us that the Matsu was the most popular Chirashi Sushi so we went with his suggestion. This version of sushi is like a deconstructed roll mixed with a poké bowl all placed into a nice sushi box. It was intimidating to eat when it was presented to us and our server didn't really know what we were asking when we wanted directions how to eat it. First things first, this is a must if you like all the seafood listed in the Matsu especially Uni (sea urchin) and Eel. For us though, after digging into it, the textures all started to blend together into something akin to mushy. This is not to say the flavors were bad. It was definitely tasty but it was oddly too much seafood for us at the time. Once again instructions and descriptions would have aided us when ordering this. If you like poké bowls you should give this a shot. It's a lot of rice though so maybe share if you aren't a hearty eater.
- Red Hot Chili Noodle (Small w/egg - easy spice) for 4 out of 5
When we first order this, we thought it was a cold dish. Little did we know that what we really ordered was a type of ramen. Different from standard ramen, this was a thicker, peanut-y broth with thin noodles and layer of chili old floating on top. Try not to be intimidated by the name (unless you go full into spicy) as the version we got had a more 'numbing' spicy than a 'set your mouth on fire' spice. The combination was a great change of flavor from the sushi and a different take on ramen than we were used to. We would definitely come back again for this dish but it was pretty filling on its own so just be aware. Also, if you really wanted ramen, you could just go next door to Chicago Ramen for some top-notch selections.
- Shrimp Tempura Roll - 3 out of 5
The least favorite thing we had that day. It was just okay honestly. If you had a shrimp tempura roll before this one probably tastes like that. Was it bad? No, but why get this when you can get a 4 shrimp hand rolls for almost the same price? read more
