I've done two projects with Chicago Custom Kitchens (CCK) and am currently reaching out to them about a third. I redid my primary bathroom and CCK did an incredible job on the design, selection and implementation of the project. I had the bathroom cabinets installed almost two years ago, and the craftsmanship remains excellent. More recently, I worked with Eric and his team on two custom bars, cabinet doors and a bookshelf. The space was tricky as we needed cooling for the home electronic system in the bookshelf cabinets and the cabinets doors next to our bar are covering a hidden under-the-stairs closet. CCK's design team came up with the perfect solution to make the space cohesive. I couldn't be happier with the results. The quality and finishes of their products are excellent. Eric, Jeff and the entire CCK team are not only very good at their jobs, they are kind and awesome people overall. Eric often went out of his way to help me with other aspects of my projects. I was having a tile issue and he connected me with his tile person who was incredibly helpful. He was always accessible when I had questions and was diligent in ensuring I was satisfied with the project results. I personally love the ability to support a local, family-owned business and this is a great one. I can't recommend them enough.

Eric abandoned us before the project was finished and didn't even give us the material we already paid for. Stay away

It all made sense when I found that they have a design area upstairs. Downstairs they have various kitchen items and gadgets. An appointment is required to talk about cabinetry and get some estimates. I met with Marnie, and she was fantastic. I had Opinions on what I did and did not want and she seemed pleased with that and that I had actually done the research on the cabinetry options she'd sent, so I came in knowing precisely which ones I wanted. It definitely made the appointment go more quickly since I already knew which door styles and colors I was interested in. She talked with me about some of the technical aspects (e.g., framed vs. frameless vanities, top mount vs. under mount sinks, etc.) and they had various examples on display. They also had most of the door styles to have a better idea of what they'd look like. For the bathroom in which the vanity would be installed, the options here were more than we wanted to spend. I'd like to consider an update for the main bathroom, though, and would look to AKB for that job. The companies they work with have really beautiful products. Honestly, it makes me want to do more remodeling (main bathroom! Kitchen!) because wandering around the showroom made me want everything! I'm probably not quite that much of a masochist given the construction that would entail, but....

I love the cabinets and am grateful for the quick support to keep them beautiful and functional. Thanks Kara and Marnie!

A serving of word salad for you, now chopped with a wicked sharp knife!…read more I am someone who believes in the utility of an EDC (Every Day Carry) knife. I have been able to upgrade a closet, open packages, soda bottles, and fix an award plaque, and more, all thanks for my trusty Victorinox Swiss Army Knife. I am of the age when many friends are getting married, and I often see knife sets on wedding registries. Here's a $100 cash and a tip that will save you $150 more: just get a good chef's knife, and keep it as sharp as reasonably possible. You may need a bread knife and maybe some steak knives if you plan to do some bbq-ing, but still cannot beat a trusty chef's knife. True to form, both my pocket knife and chef's knife get a fair amount of work. I have a pull through sharpener at home (though it technically hones more than it sharpens). This one is good for some regular 'maintenance' when the edge starts slipping instead of gliding through a tomato, but every now and again, having a professional but a proper edge does wonders. Now, as much as I would love to have a kitchen knife sharp enough to shave with, I also know this would result in a brittle knife that would break as soon as it met cartilage. At the same time, I have seen many reels of knives that can cut paper on the fly. While I found out there is a certain technique to do so, Northside Cutlery was able to get my knives sharp enough to glide through paper. The rates are reasonable at $7/knife, and the turnaround time is fast. Everyone working the shop was kind and friendly as well. While professional sharpening is not something I do on a regular basis, I can absolutely see myself returning to Northside Cutlery for all my sharpening needs.
