I learned a lot of things from my Dad-- How to be fair, how to work really hard and do more than is asked of you, how to be generous: I did not learn that if you have a fireplace and use it regularly, even if you always use hardwood, you will need to have it cleaned regularly. So after twenty years of making modest hardwood fires, I started to have a cough. My sister came to visit and even being in the living room (no fire) made her cough and gave her a runny nose. Thinking, okay, I'll have my chimney cleaned, I called Chicago Chimney. Toni was nice and said that Mario was really good at his work, and it would be $150. When he came, pleasant, personable, and clearly competent, I could see that being near my fireplace was making his nose run. I told him about my sister. Might need more that just a cleaning, he said. He shone his flashlight up a short ways into the fireplace. "I call that black glass", he said. What is it? I said. My English is not so good, he said, underestimating his excellent skills. Google clarified. I found out that bubbles of "black glass" represent the third stage of a serious creosote problem-- first soot, then tar that is runny, then the glass part, beautiful and perfectly ready for a chimney fire. One thing about my dad, he prepared me to know a good person when I saw him. Mario said that he was going to have to come back with material and brushes that could dissolve the creosote. The next day, when forty or fifty pounds of mortar on the chimney lining just fell off piece by piece once the creosote was not holding it all together, he explained that another day and another step would be involved, putting a mixture of protective covering over a now very porous surface, insulation, sealant. (As it happened, he did this himself by crawling up into the tight black space and painting it on. The dilemma of having a helper who was unwilling to do it was a problem he would deal with later. He took the guy off to another job and came back. It was this part, where he was a matter of fact about doing the exceptionally nasty work, and understanding about the kid's inability to do it-- he just said "last winter I was doing this every day." I want to put a sign up in my yard for him and his professional and humane work. He charged me $900 for the cleaning part and $1100 for the resealing part. Interestingly, this is less than $150/ year for 20 years, not even counting inflation; I recommend him wholeheartedly for yearly (or every-other-year sweeping) and for the whole cleaning and sealant job if you are someone who didn't know how bad it could get. We hired ChimCare for what should have been a routine inspection and sweep, and instead ended up with a serious safety incident and very poor workmanship. Their technician left the gas running before ignition, causing a fireball to shoot out of the fireplace while I (and our dog) were sitting next to it. It singed the worker's hair and melted his phone case/phone, this easily could have resulted in a serious injury or property damage. It also became clear during the visit that the technicians didn't know how to operate one of our fireplaces. They had to text photos to someone else for instructions and still could not get the second fireplace working (which we later discovered is controlled by a simple wall switch). Despite the lack of safety and technical competence, we were charged a 50% mid-service up charge for "deep cleaning" sweep, with no clear explanation of what that covered beyond the original inspection & sweep service, all while we were trying to calm our dog, who was scared from the fireball. The stone on one fireplace needed crack repair, but the workmanship was sloppy. Sealant was accidentally smeared onto our marble facade on the outside of the fireplace and not cleaned up, and the color of the sealant doesn't match the stone in our fireplace. None of this was disclosed beforehand, and now it will require further repair to fix. We reached out via phone and email multiple times asking for a resolution and gave the company every opportunity to address the issues. It has been over a month with zero response from management. We are now having to dispute the charge through our credit card company. Based on the safety risk, lack of technical knowledge, the questionable mid-service up-charge, and complete lack of accountability or care to resolve these issues with us, I would not recommend this company. read more

Another scammer! Had Chicago Chimney out to "sweep" my chimney. Mario came out and spent literally 10mins with a shop vac inside my fireplace. He then showed my wife a video and some pictures and told her that we had "multiple gaps, voids, and irregular surfaces inside the smoke chamber", that are considered a fire hazard and needed to be repaired - at an estimate cost of $500. I contacted our go-to for chimney and masonry repairs - ELITE CHIMNEY - who did some work on our chimney and firebox a few years ago. Lenny came out (for FREE) and immediately told me that there are some superficial cracks that are not a fire hazard and not an emergency to repair. He recommended that we do nothing right now except enjoy our fireplace! He suggested re-doing the mortar between the bricks in the firebox in the next 2yrs or so, and possibly adding a stainless steel damper to the top of the chimney for better efficiency - though that is not necessary. I hired Chicago Chimney to clean my dryer vent as I heard birds continually flying into it and to put up a guard to prevent them from flying in. Originally, the owner had to reschedule due to an emergency but gave me notice in advance and it was no issue at all. He rescheduled and showed up on time. He was professional and asked how I would like to handle it if birds were currently in there and may have built a nest. He was very concerned for the birds safety which I thought was nice and humane of him. Luckily, no birds or a nest were in there. He said the birds were probably flying in and out to get warm because there was bird poop present. I didn't know what kind of guard to get so I didn't buy it in advance. He waited patiently as I drove to Menards in my area to get some. He got it all cleaned up and then put the dryer vent guard on. We had strong winds the next couple of days so the screen on the guard flew off. I contacted the business and they came out right away to take care of it for no additional charge and he even put some adhesive on it to get it to stay.
