The rice was smooth and thick. I wish there were more century egg bits. The broth flavor could have been a bit stronger, so I asked for shoyu. One order is good for two people. I also ordered shrimp dumplings. They were plump pieces of shrimp and a good size. The skin wasn't thick either. They weren't hot like the porridge was but it was fine coz then I could eat them right away. The hubs got some pork mochi. They were quite generously filled as well. The mochi was crispy and chewy. Everything was decently priced. It's a little stall in the Maunakea Marketplace food court, so mostly self-service over the counter. The uncle was kind and pleasant. Auntie was busy cooking/prepping in the back. We were there around lunchtime on a Sunday so they were probably getting ready to pack up as well. I'd try the fried donut and other dim sum items next time!

UBE HORCHATA! growing up in Las Vegas and being in a heavily Hispanic community. Trying that beverage made my taste buds dance. Highly recommend. Staff treated myself and my other half as if we were regulars and took the time to explain each entree if we had any questions! Now don't let the outside fool you, soon as you walk in and see the small decorations they have in the kitchen. It feels like home. One thing I would suggest to their menu is that their elote, I wish for it to be on the cob and have that cheesy flavor to it. It was different but delicious. My opinion probably the best yet affordable taco spot in Oahu!

And on one of my last walk in Waikiki, I got on of his hotdogs. John and his staff were incredibly welcoming. He's originally from Philly, and as someone from the East Coast, I immediately felt that warm hospitality. John is so sweet, he even offered me the hot dog on the house... completely unexpected, but a true reflection of John's demeanor. I went with the chicken hot dog "John style" (well that is everything but the sauerkraut). I wasn't hesitate about the mustard because I'm usually not a fan but the staff insisted it was more like Dijon mustard anyways. The hotdog was loaded, flavorful, and way better than I expected for someone who usually keeps it simple with the toppings. The bun broke down a bit from all the toppings, but that was to be expected with all the toppings loaded on there. You can't beat the location, it's right outside the Ilikai by the lagoon though the service alone makes this an easy five stars. I'm really happy this ended up being one of my last food experiences living in Hawaii. I'd be eager to see John and his staff again if I return.

This year, we were determined to make it early enough to finally try the Bald Guy, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The food was honestly divine. We tried the pan-fried poke, kalbi beef, furikake crusted salmon, chopped steak, and spam musubi, and every single thing was incredible. It was so good that we ended up eating here twice during our trip. Also, special shoutout to the mac and cheese because WOW... it is ridiculously good. My personal favorites were the poke, chopped steak, and kalbi beef, but truly everything we ordered was amazing. The staff was also super kind and helpful with all our questions. Just a heads up, they do sell out of certain items before closing, so definitely try to get there earlier rather than later. Cannot wait to come back!

This time I wanted to try the garlic shrimp bc I've only heard good things. My niece and her boyfriend were visiting and I wanted them to experience this food truck. They ordered a combo plate with the garlic shrimp and steak. The food was delicious. They actually rated it the best meal that had while they were on the island. That should tell ya something. The shrimp were big and cooked perfectly. Seasoned to perfection. Just the right amount of garlic and the extra sauce made for the best rice. I was happy with the quantity of shrimp too. Definitely a worth it meal in my book. I also got a teriyaki spam musubi to try. Also good. I like how they wrapped it. Just a slight variation from the ones I typically eat. Will definitely be back. I still want to try the salmon. We got in line just at the right time bc when we turned to sit down after ordering there was a long line that had formed behind us. Our food got done quickly and we sat down at the picnic tables to enjoy it. It was busy so we shared a picnic table with another family. Hopefully you don't mind doing that bc space is often limited.

However, when I saw Jackie K.'s photos and reviews, I learned that bentos are available, too! The next obstacle for me was the parking. I dislike metered street parking. I had to just figure it out. Another aspect to consider was the hours of operation. Teruya's Andagi is closed on Sundays and Mondays. The remaining five days of the week are open from 10am to 2pm. When I approached the cozy shop, there was a line out the door! That's because customers don't go inside. Everyone stays outside. The workers are inside and there's a table blocking the entrance. On the table are samples of bentos with prices clearly marked. Service was very friendly! I told the cheerful woman that this was my first visit. She explained that this company used to be at Shirokiya! Wow... that was quite a while ago... over 8 years?... at Ala Moana Center! I took 3 bentos to my mom's house and shared with my sister and niece. My sister said her office had ordered from Teruya's in the past! My niece enjoyed the Shrimp Tempura roll. I liked everything... the Veggie Bento was colorful and tasty! The Garlic Chicken Roll Bento and andagi in the Veggie Bento were delicious! The prices were so reasonable! I will return!
