Every dish is ordered a la carte, and depending on what you order, it could get quite pricey. We opted for the set menu "C" for 4 people at HK$1,250 (approximately US$160) which included: -- A large variety of banchans which were actually quite similar to what you'll find in most Korean BBQ places in the US. Personally, I'm not a big fan of banchans but I did like their version of potato salad and kimchi. The kimchi wasn't too hot and spicy like some other ones that I've had, so for me, it was good. -- Korean raw beef plate (see picture). I can't remember its Korean name but it's the equivalent of a Carpaccio. This was da bomb and was the star of the night. It was absolutely fresh, beefy, flavorful, and delicious. Tip: Dip it lightly in the sauce so it won't overwhelm the natural taste of the beef. It was not exactly raw like Carpaccio or steak tartare, as you could tell from the edges that it's been quickly charred and seared before it's sliced. This's actually the way that I like and prefer. This was beyond yummy and it was so memorable that two weeks later, I can still remember what it tasted like as I am writing this review. -- Three dishes of raw meat for BBQ which included beef ribs, pork and scallops. The quality of the meats was good as expected, and it was also lightly marinated so the natural flavors were retained. We were so tired that night that none of us wanted to lift a finger to BBQ and it was such a relief that our server offered to cook for us. That was awesome. The BBQ meats were good, but nothing spectacular, especially after the stellar "Korean Carpaccio" plate. -- Soup noodles. To save time, our server was preparing our soup using a stove at the empty table next to us while we were eating the BBQ food - that's so cool! (How did she know that I was ready to fall asleep?) The soup noodles were meh and really nothing special, and the portion was rather small. My only issue with this place was that the portions were really small - even by Hong Kong's standard (which is infamous for tiny portions). The soup noodles, when divided into four bowls, were literally 2 soup spoonfuls of noodles for each person. The portions of the BBQ meats were also quite tiny. Moreover, I suspect that they didn't know how to do basic math - the pork plate came with 3 slices of mushrooms (see picture) and the scallop plate came with 6 scallops - and this was a set dinner for 4 people! This was really a 3.5-star experience - it's better than ok but I'm not a fan yet. But based on the portion size (in terms of HK$ and in terms of HK's standard to be fair), I'm rounding it down to 3 stars.

My favourite of the night was the volcano fried rice. Generous portions and the taste was on point. The bibimbap was different than what I've had in the past. The egg was egg white only. Taste was good though. The meat platter was also good. Enough for sharing amongst 5 people. I do wish there were more side dishes though. Only kimchi was complimentary. Every thing else was extra. The seafood pancake had almost no seafood. Lots of oil and not crunchy enough too. The fried combo could be better. The deep fried dumplings weren't very good. Everything else was average. Prices are high without discount, but after 50% off it was quite decent and fair. Overall it was a good experience. A nice, cozy place to hang out with friends and family.

Dinner in Hong Kong…read more.. After a long day of shopping, we truly were HUNGRY! I had already decided in my mind to eat kalbi. It was 96HK$ and came with a bowl white rice. The tasty kalbi (not the best quality) arrived on a sizzling platter along with some Korean mochi sticks (tteokbokki) that weren't spicy! Yay! They had a nice crisp outer layer from the caramelization of the teriyaki sauce. The inside of the tteokbokki was soft and comfortingly chewy. Service was efficient. We ordered and paid at the counter. Our food was brought to us. There wasn't much interaction because of the language barrier. The shop was clean and bright with lime green chairs and accaccents. We appreciated the air-conditioning and seat-yourself, casual style. No reservation needed!

Hungry for Korean…read more.. After stumbling on this place on our way back from lunch at a nearby Italian restaurant it was decided that this would be dinner woohoo! Located on Ashley Road where there are many other restaurants as well this cozy place just simply stood out especially since menu items here are below $98HK and though the Kalbi ribs sounds like the protein packed nutritious I'm craving it was the Jap Chae which was made to order and served hot with carrots, spinach, beef and scrambled eggs at $44HK which is about $6.20 is the portion is small but was just the right size the keep me fueled to explore. This modest shop has a decent amount of seating and you need to order at the counter which the staff will bring out to your table which is nice and clean and the much needed break in this lovely air conditioned restaurant that what a lucky discovery. The three of us came here around noon to beat the crowd. Lunch appointment is recommended if you come for lunch around 1pm. We ordered Bimbimbap with beef, Korean Sausage Soup, and Beef Short Rib Stew. The Bimbimbap is as expected, you can request to add the spicy sauce by yourself when they served the food. The best part of the Bimbimbap was the rice crisps at the bottom of the pot at the end of your meal. Very crispy and it socked up all the flavors from the dish. The Korean Sausage Soup was listed with 1 star of spiciness, but it was definitely spicier than expected. I liked spicy food myself, but the spiciness seemed to have taken over the dish. I couldn't taste much of other flavors and was busy wiping sweat of my forehead. The Beef Short Rib Stew is one of my favorites Korean dish. It's usually very juicy and tender in the sweet beef broth. However, the Beef Short Rib Stew served today was a bit too oily.

We ordered the following: Beef, Seafood & Kimchi Sundubu, each comes with rice cooked in a stone bowl, the combo also comes with a meat of your choice and we ordered the LA Short Ribs & Spicy Pork. And we can't go without an order of Pork & Veggie Dumplings! I have to say their flavour and portion size was spot on and for sure we will come again to try out other items!

After trying jjimdak in Seoul several years ago, I've been on the lookout for a place in Hong Kong…read morethat serves this specialty dish and Bongchu comes to my rescue! I first tried this place about a year ago when it first opened, and although it's not as good as eating it in South Korea, it'll do when I have a strong craving for jjimdak. First of all, what is jjimdak? Jjim means stew and dak means chicken so it's a kind of stewed chicken that comes with a potato glass noodle. The sauce that it's in is slightly sweet, almost like a sweet soy sauce. There are usually veggies in it also. Bongchu's comes with cucumbers, carrots, and onions. You can also choose the spice level you want (1-3 peppers). We tried the two pepper version tonight and it was definitely not as spicy as I imagined it would be. My mouth wasn't even burning. I think the part that could use some improvement is how flavorful the chicken is. It almost feels like the chicken wasn't stewed in the sauce for a long enough time because while the outside of the chicken has flavor, once you bite into it there is none of the flavor from the sauce. We also had their spicy fried chicken. This was also not as spicy as we thought it would be. The sauce tasted the like red spicy sauce from tteokbokki. The skin of the chicken wasn't soggy but definitely could have been more crunchy and the chicken wasn't as juicy as it could have been. You do get a place glove for your thumb and forefinger so you can eat with your hands. I appreciated that. Also, the fried chicken comes with some fries. The servers here don't really speak Cantonese so use either Korean or English. Although the menu has all 3 languages on it. The servers are nice and attentive though. During the several times that I've been here, it has never really been crowded (I've been for both lunch and dinner). The spend is around HK$150-$200 (~US$22-27) a head depending on what you get. It is also quite close to the B exit of the Mong Kok MTR station. Overall, I would recommend this place if you love jjimdak or would really like to try it. Again, it's not as good as it is in Korea but I'll take what I can get.

A little hard to communicate with the servers, tried requesting for more water in Cantonese and they could not understand... until I pointed at my water cup and those of the rest of the table. I'll need to try other KFC places to make a fair comparison, but all I can say is, you can't go wrong with Goobne!

Once seated, it felt like a typical chain restaurant however the service was actually quite acceptable for being so busy. Everyone was drinking these fancy drinks that were blue with toy sharks or upside down beers inside a frozen concoction. Very Korean and very popular these days. The "yogiyo" button for service came in super handy. We decided to order the chicken salad which was quite tasty and healthy. I liked how they put the dressing on the side so it wasn't drenched. The salad was quite a healthy portion for 2 people. We also got the crunchy rice boneless sweet chicken that was really tasty. Very nice crunch and also a good portion for 2 people. Finally we washed it all down with fish cake soup. On a cold night, it totally hit the spot. All in all, it was a good meal and quite authentic tasting. I would come back again, minus the wait. The soup was good with rice, there was already some rice at the bottom of the pot but we didn't know that so we ordered a separate bowl of rice. The sizzling chicken with cheese platter was also pretty flavorful. It had a little spice but wasn't too spicy. Interesting experience and we found out that they have several locations throughout HK, good to know.

This is the first time I tried this place and I'm happy I did. The concept is built around the fact that the chicken is roasted as opposed to fried. However, the chicken was crispy and wasn't dry. I wouldn't go as far as saying juicy but the meat was on point. The Japchae was a bit different than I'm used to. First off it came out warm as opposed to room temperature. Secondly, it wasn't premixed and you had to mix it yourself. Overall, it was pretty good but I found it to be a bit too sweet. This is mainly because the bulgogi was marinated with a lot of sugar. The egg omelette is really substantial. It's kind of kimbap with egg substitutes for the nori and rice. They put some cheese in their which I'm indifferent towards. Not sure if I would have preferred it with or without the cheese. I am unlikely to order this again. All in all I enjoyed my meal. My son ate a whole drumstick which is an accomplishment given how picky of an eater he is. Definitely a place worth checking out and I would come back.
