This is a hard one to write! The couple running this truck seems very nice and they're fellow Chicagoans...But the food just fell flat for me. Deep dish is a Chicago staple and if you say you are doing your pizza Chicago style, it needs to live up to that statement. My friend and I ordered a pizza when the truck was outside my apartment complex. We ordered ahead so our pizza was hot and ready when we picked it up. The pizza itself was unfortunately not mouth-wateringly delicious. First things first, the pizza was quite small & not quite deep enough for the $20 price tag. This is more than the deep dishes back in Chicago for bigger pies. The crust was a big issue for us. A signature part of deep dishes is the buttery thick crust. The crust at Chi-Pie has a cornmeal element to it which was cool for a piece of it, but after a second piece we weren't loving it and didn't even eat the crust. It was so sad because back home the crust is my favorite part! The sauce was thin and watery, perhaps the tomatoes were not strewn completely and this caused the entire pizza to be super soggy. The undercarriage of the crust was soaked and didn't hold up when lifted up to eat. That's another thing, deep dish is usually a fork and knife food. This was thin and didn't cut well so it was more of a lift-up-to-your-mouth type pizza. The cheese was very tasty and enjoyable but not thick enough for a deep dish. Plus it was not gooey and nomz but solid without a cheesy pull. Now the sausage was disappointing. It had good flavor but it was sparse on our pizza. Sausage is a HUGE deal in Chicago, we were the meat packing capital for 100 years starting in 1865. If you get a sausage pie, it should be packed with meat. And even better? If it has the signature sheet of sausage which goes over the entire pie instead of small pieces. I am not writing Chi-Pie completely off as I think they can make a few improvements and be stellar! If they didn't call the pizza Chicago style, I probably would add a star to my rating but touting it as that and for what it was - just doesn't work. I'll give them another try in the future with high hopes.

I love pizza! Who doesn't, right? Being from Chicago, I am always on the search for the best Chicago deep dish pizza. It's a challenge to find a good deep dish pie outside of Chicago. The two major pizza chains in Chicago are Giordano's and Lou Malnati's. I have had my share of the dense cheesy goodness and I hold them both to the highest standards. Chi-Pie however is not a restaurant! They are a food truck. The owners work off of the truck and they are a husband and wife team from Chicago. Very friendly. The pizza does takes about 45 minutes to an hour to make, so be prepared before ordering. We have only tried the large pepperoni and mushroom deep dish. (Pairs great with an adult beverage) Let's talk pizza. To start, the crust is golden brown, buttery, soft and flaky, and it has a taste of corn bread. It has a sweet taste. The tomato sauce is also sweet and tangy. The pizza itself is very heavy and loaded with cheese. It has a thick, dense, gooey mozzarella which makes for an epic "Cheese Pull". Be prepared, if you have never experienced a deep dish pizza, it can seem overwhelming. I only have one small issue that can easily be fixed. Our pizza seems to always soak through the bottom of the pizza box it is served in before we can get it home. A quick fix would be to get pizza box linings or a thicker box. That is not stopping us from ordering again, though. We follow them on Instagram and try to order when they are in our area. Pro tip: When you pick up your pizza, place it on the floor board of your car or you'll end up with greasy seats. Support the bottom of the box. Just in case.

A food truck that sells Chicago style deep dish pizza hence the name Chi-Pie. I've already tried them twice. First time when they were parked in a brewery near my work and second, during the Pizza fest in Hollywood this year.. When I saw on Instagram the epic cheese pulls on their pizza, I decided to check them out. Bought a slice of deep dish pizza which was really thick but I was bummed that no cheese pull happened. I actually posted a comment and they replied back that cheese pulls don't happen all the time which to me sounded like an issue with consistency. During the pizza fest, I'd like to commend them for sticking around later than most vendors to serve all the customers lining up in their stall and serving the biggest portion of pizza than anyone else. However due to the mad rush, pizza was a bit undercooked but I don't hold it against them considering the situation. The people working here are friendly and nice. Hats off to them for starting this business to earn a decent living but as a newcomer, there's still lots to improve on which is expected of anyone who's just starting from scratch. May I suggest for other reviewers to please be considerate by offering constructive criticism rather than completely writing them off? Let's give them and every small businesses a fair chance to succeed. Thank you.

Spectacular! My wife and I have ordered from these guys multiple times. It's definitely better with more toppings! The sauce is soooooo good! Nice thick cornmeal crust! The company itself is super friendly and goes the extra mile of ensuring customer satisfaction. If you haven't tried Chi-Pie than you are really missing out!!!!

Great tasting deep dish. Will choose chi pie every time it's around. The dough was perfect, sauce was flavorful, and lots of cheese.

Anyways it was just so good!! Potato pieces, bacon, lots of cheese and some type of ranch dressing? Sign me upppp. I'm not big on pepperoni or meat-style pizzas and sometimes the plain cheese/veggie ones aren't what I'm in the mood for. This potato one was the perfect middle for me. It was everything I ever wanted in a pizza I miss it so bad. Anyways this is just my little love letter to that potato pizza and I can only hope that it's brought back soon! Parking is rough as is usual for arts district but I'd suffer through that willingly for more potato pizza.

In the same vein, we stuck with a similar style of food and ended up at Propaganda. There was little to no wait, which was pleasant. It was a nice day and we decided to eat outside. The focaccia bread and salad came out first, and both were good. I enjoyed the crispiness of the bread, though my only qualms were that the bread was quite oily and the butter and salt were just a tad bit too salty for my liking. The Insalata Mista salad was solid. Good flavor, good dressing-to-salad ratio, and a surprisingly good portion size. As far as pizza goes, the Margherita was good. Tasty, moist, and a nice crunch on the crust. I found it to be enjoyable, though I may have enjoyed more fresh basil on this. I did find it better than the Boscaiola. I got the black truffle honey add on, and it does not go well on this pizza in my opinion. There was virtually no taste of truffle to me, and more of just an aftertaste of oily sweet honey. This was a miss. It's hard to say whether the base pizza was good without it because the flavor profile was just too overpowered by the aftertaste. The Arts District is definitely coming up with new upscale dining establishments, and I'm there for it. I think this is a solid addition. Though this is a wine bar, I don't generally drink, so my review is based purely on the food. Results of their drinks, which is quite an extensive list, may be to your liking! They do have an inexpensive three wine flight, for reference!
