One day, I realized my brows were out of control and needed immediate attention, so I did a search for waxing with my work zip code. Many moons ago, when I was a 17 year old budding woman, my mother decided it was time for me to start removing the mustache I had grown up with my whole life as well as begin to tame the bushy nests above my eyes known as eyebrows----that sometimes, looked as though they could be one long unibrow. I was ready for this change seeing as I had grown up with people teasing me about this hairy state of being for most of my adolescence. So, she took me to a woman named Jamela who lived in an apartment and Jamela pointed me to a chair, told me to lean my head back and proceeded to thread the first strip of hair off of my eyebrows. That was when I punched her. That's right friends. I punched the poor woman. Seering hot pain ripped across my face and my first and only instinct was to hurt the horrific wench who had dared to bring such pain into my life. I swear to Goddess, it took my two sisters, and my mother to coax both Jamela and I into proceeding with the threading. I would have happily walked out of there right then with an awkward strip in the middle of my brow-line taken out, and NEVER have looked back. I took about 25 breaks during the course of the eyebrow threading, and when she moved to my upper lip---I swear, I almost passed out when the pain got worse. Though I haven't been to her in quite some time, this is actually a testament to what an amazing job she did with my eyebrows. When I was 16, I found myself with some tweezers, and...you can guess the rest. I overplucked and gave myself these horrible pencil-thin eyebrows that don't work well AT ALL with my round face. I went to Shiraz, sad, scared, and she recommended steps to nursing my eyebrows back to health, helping me keep them clean while i waited for them to regrow. Within a couple of months, my eyebrows weren't only better - they were PERFECT. She understands shapes and faces - she's not going to give you the same eyebrow treatment she gave another person, because no two people are identical. So that leads to the situation where someone asks me if I just came from sipping wine at a cute, French cafe and I nod along because I don't have the heart to say that I was really out tidying up my caveman eyebrows. She works out of her home (I love that there's an adorable golden retriever to greet you at the door!) and it's a little pricier than what I'm used to, but you get what you pay for. I really wanted this to work out. I'd read SO many positive reviews and was stoked to have her help me with my thin brows. I told her that I needed help because I've had a botched job recently and wanted her to get my brows into a shape where they would grow back nicely. My first clue that they were awful is when I didn't get more than a second to look at them before she started moving on. I'd taken months to let them grow out only to have her thin them so much and so unevenly that they look like I let the 13 yr old next door do them. She flattened out most of the shape of my brows and threaded so much in the middle so it looks unbelievably unnatural. Not only are my brows in terrible shape but when she brushed off the hairs when she was done, she did a quick swipe which merely pushed a few hairs onto random parts of my face and into my eyelashes. Afterwards she told me that I should get some cod liver oil to help my brows grow in. After I left, I spent nearly 10 minutes in my car pulling hairs out of my lashes, eyes and picking them off parts of my face. Maybe she could've given you a really good brow threading, but for god sake DO NOT GET A BIKINI WAX HERE! I don't think any of these yelp reviews were on her bikini waxes and I didn't do enough research. I showed up at this lady's house, got undressed and laid on her table. She brought in a plastic container with a metal kitchen knife stuck into it, and told me she made the wax herself. I was immediately concerned but I was already half naked and was too late to back out. It hurt so bad and even after going over the same areas multiple times and finally doing threading, I still had patches of hair left. It was horribly painful and after I was done she put back the kitchen knife into the container and I'm pretty sure going to use it for the next bikini wax customer. Anyone knowledgeable about bikini waxes should know a good waxer would never ever ever double-dip. I had redness and bumps for days. Let me re-emphasize, DO NOT COME TO HER FOR A BIKINI WAX!!!!!!! I love Shiraz! She does such a good job on my bushy crazy eyebrows! Its so easy to make an appointment with her online once you become one of her customers. I like the fact that she does it out of her home and she is so welcoming every time I come over. Her dog is super sweet! When I first started going to Shiraz last year one of my brows was slightly shorter than the other but now they are both even and look amazing when freshly threaded. She told me to let her work with it and try not to do too much to them between threading appointments. Well she was totally right and I now see the importance of going to the same person consistently (as long as they know whatthey are doing). Bottom line, I won't let anyone touch my eyebrows except for her. One day I was late for an appointment (yeah I know my fault), but she was so nice to not make me reschedule. She finished my eyebrows in about 6 or 7 minutes and still did an awesome job. She was even able to finish before her other appointment showed up. If you are looking for someone to thread your eyebrows on a regular basis she is perfect. Waxes immediately break out my sensitive skin but threading works great for me. I will be in trouble if she ever decides to retire from the eyebrow threading business. I have had my brows threaded by numerous people and she is by far the quickest, best, and most affordable. I am SO relieved to have found Chez Shiraz! I have tried eyebrow waxing, overpriced tweezing, and tweezing on my own, but I've never been fully satisfied with my brows. I know they need growth, but I've just never been able to get enough growth. I just returned home from my first appointment with Shiraz, and I am THRILLED to have found her! Since I recently began using a retinoid on my face to clear up some acne, I decided to give threading a try since my usual waxing is no longer an option. We moved to Austin a couple months ago, and I tried Chez Shiraz for the first time today (for my brows). I've been to about 4 threading places in San Diego, and they were fine...but Shiraz is amazing and worth a review. I don't think threading is painful, but I usually I tear up a bit when I get it done--it's an involuntary thing I can't really control--but she was so gentle, precise, and quick that my eyes didn't water at all. I know some people think it's a little strange to go to someone's house for this--my husband, included--but it's really not that uncommon for threading. Shiraz is friendly, welcoming, and lives in a nice home...and, like another reviewer here, I actually prefer this atmosphere. Parking will never be a problem, and it makes the appointment feel more like you're visiting a friend than anything else. After reading reviews, I decided to email Shiraz to make an appointment. She called me later in the day but I missed it. I called her back, but was directed to a full voice mailbox. All I had to do was shoot her a quick email, and she got back to me again. As a local small business owner, this didn't bother me at all. You have no choice but to list your business phone number when you register with the city, so I get 2-5 calls per day from telemarketers. If you're trying to get work done, this is REALLY annoying, so you screen calls when you don't recognize the number. So I found her email, and emailed very late on a Thursday night inquiring about getting my eyebrows done. She called me the following Friday morning. She said she was full all day on Saturday because she starts at 10 but she would squeeze me in at 9:45 if I wanted to come. I was psyched and naturally said yes. I really enjoyed the ambiance of her set up. Her studio is clean and relaxing. She was very great at keeping the entire process calm. She soothes you while threading, that takes talent! (i hesitated for a sec... cuz life experience of friends plus perhaps a little too much tv/movies make services performed at residential places give me a bit of a creep. but then decided why not, she's got awesome awesome ratings). on the scheduled appointment day, i got there 15 minutes earlier than my scheduled time (due to my fear of austin's traffic). rang the door bell and she answered the door saying "hi summer" (wow, that's good customer service right there. and her house's so neat and clean and nice looking!! and she's got such a sweet dog, like mine!!). she mentioned there's a client ahead of me who is running late but she will just take me first. before she got to me, the clients that were supposedly scheduled before me came in. still, she asked me to go ahead and she seated the 2 clients in the room. (ok, a little awkward but luckily i have nothing to hide or be ashamed of and it was only threading for my brows and upper lip after all). everyone chatted during the threading. she was quick and my brows came out so pretty. and she had awesome theory about not waxing the face (especially the brows) so instantly she became my heroine in the beauty world. i have yet to try the sugar waxing and i am super excited. o and don't forget to ask for an account for her website... which i think allows for booking appointments and seeing the price for the services. it's dirt cheap!!! well, ok, not dirt cheap, but compare to all the other salons/spas i've been too... it is. and trust me, i've been to A LOT. she was totally worth the effort of getting a hold of and totally worth me driving 30 minutes for :D read more

I'm writing this review even though I have not gone to her. And probably won't because she'll certainly never want me to go there after I publish this. It's no use being great, if you NEVER return calls and when people call your voice mail says "memory full". Her voice mail has been on "memory full for 4 days now". This has happened to me 6 times now over 6 months. So I've never actually been able to talk to her to even set up an appointment. Seriously. It makes me think if I ever did see her, I'd never be able to schedule follow ups because she never answers the phone. I'm guessing this is a job she does after a regular day job. Which is fine. Absolutely no issue, in fact it's wonderful. But if you are as great as people are saying, you've obviously got a following. So either get more memory for your voice mail and/or set aside time to return people's calls PROMPTLY as in within a week. Many will say (even me to an extent) that "jeez, it's just brows, why is it so urgent" but those of us with the hairy gene can understand how great it is to well, look great! I am going to someone else on Tuesday because, well, they ACTUALLY ANSWERED THEIR PHONE!!!! How weird is that, someone who answers their phone? I know people love Shiraz, and I am just sad that I won't experience it. Or maybe she is actually a mythical figure! read more
