Came here with 2 of my colleagues a few nights ago and really enjoyed it. Kinda off a cozy French cafe decor with a good wine selection and rich, well prepared food. We stayed for about 2 hours and had a couple glasses of wine and an appetizer each. We all loved our main dishes and they all paired well with the wine recommendations. Service was attentive but not overly in our business. Come here for a good French meal in a cozy setting. I'd recommend for small groups. Enjoy! read more

I had a friend who mentioned this place to me a couple of years ago. I can't believe I remembered that as we stumbled upon it just walking around. Exuberant crowd drew us in. We House red was not very good. I ordered the creamy peach duck and my husband the cassoulet. Both were excellent as was the fois Gras we had for a starter. Bread was fantastic! What happened to Parisian portions? We were stuffed and should have ordered less. Draw back - lettuce with the app was wilted and a bit brown. It should not have made it to our table. read more

Papa style snails: Comes out piping hot as a mix of snails, tomatoes and mushroom in a creamy broth. Goes really well with the complimentary bread. This is just completely my style of food, rich, buttery and creamy tomato base with a lot of flavor from the snails and shrooms. 5/5. Bread platter with achua: I tried to ask for the bread basque style but the waiter steered me toward this one, ostensibly because it is better, and I can't complain. It was not super inspired, just a toast with veggies and baked cheese on top. Came with a very basic side salad that had a tasty dressing. 4/5 Duck breast confit with leeks: Duck is the thing in France and this was a very well prepared duck. I saw other reviewers say that their duck "burger" was overcooked- well then go with the conit! The leeks are obviously slow cooked for maximum savory factor and go very nicely with the gamey pices of meat upon which they sit. Again this was a situation where I asked the waiter - what duck dish is best and he recommended this one. 5/5 Certainly this dining experience was different than the majority of dinners I enjoyed in France. It had the more homey, personal and casual approach from waitstaff that I would expect in the South of France and the flavors (even traditional menu items, not the South of France menu items) felt more southern-inspired as well. A lot more tomato flavor in sauces and broths here. The price was also good for France but the lunch take away looks like the real bargain. I'm surprised this place doesn't have at least 4 stars it is a nice sit down casual dining at a great location walking distance from the Tour de Parnasse and and the catacombs. The dining area is casual and comfortable with booths or stand alone tables- although the tables are a bit old and wobbly (two tables dropped glasses while I was there!) However, it was a ver friendly atmosphere, the waiters always smiled at the smashed glasses and cleaned it up quickly. Meanwhile, the patrons seated to my right were a couple of German tourists, and next to them a French man who was dining solo offered them some of his appetizer because he couldn't eat it all. Who says the French are haughty - I have found them to be anything but! I think Americans (especially New Yorkers or people from LA) are not anywhere near as nice to tourists as Parisians are. Overall I would recommend this place as a solid lunch or dinner spot, although it is probably not a destination in and of itself for trying out Southern French cuisine. read more

I am a founding member of the Chez Papa HALL OF FAME. I've eaten here since 1999 when this place was recommended to me by hotel owner, it was a few minute walk from Rue Cels. I actually had most things on the menu multiple times and have eaten here over 100 times. Very low key unpretentious spot. On my last trip to Paris a friend of mine was taking me to his personal favorite place to eat from Augentiul (hope I spelled that right). As we were driving the neighborhood was becoming very familiar. Imagine my shock that he picked my fav place. What are the odds. One word of advice, certain dishes are HEAVY (duck), thick stews to name a few.....if you are coming hungry go for it. If not I warned you!!! People laugh when I told them I was in Paris again only to eat. And this was the place to do so. My friend told me it was the orginal Chez Papa in Paris so I had to try it. I had an enjoyable experience at Chez Papa. I came in for a late lunch after walking a good distance to get to the Catacombs and was quite "hangry". I couldn't make a decision as to what I would like to eat, explained to my waiter my predicament and he chose my meal for me as well as my wine! Best meal I've had in Paris. I went with there set menu which at the time was €36 it included an appetizer, main course, happy hour cocktail and desert. The quality of the food was delicious. Everything was excellent, the tartare was very flavorful and the potatoes also were very good!! Must try the homemade bread, especially if it's just out of the owen, really good!! read more

I'd tried the "salad" before, so I knew what I was in for. And, as with my first visit, the Super Papa Salad was the best dish I ate while in Paris. Chez Papa is a chain so there are quite a few locations (each with slightly different menus). It's usually crowded and the waitstaff can be surly and/or sassy. The Super Papa Salad name doesn't quite translate to the North American concept of salad. Sure, its got a few leafy greens but the Super Papa is a real meat and potatoes dish. Cuisine hails from the southwest of France and really focuses on authentic tastes from the source. A base of potatoes with some kind of miracle cheese, some greens, duck produits, lardons (a superior form of bacon), and a slice of country bread with a melty round of chevre. Sounds simple, oui? Anything but. The taste is incomporable and, I'm sadly discovering, impossible for me to replicate now that I'm stateside. Please go if you ever visit Paris. Drink up, chow down, and celebrate with the Super Papa Salad! read more

There were possibly other good things on the menu but the Plate de Crantal was greasy and heavy and dessert was basic and dry. This is why I tend to stray away from franchise restaurants. read more

I always consider the first day of vacation in a new city a culinary wash, especially after an overnight flight and a day of sticking it out to kick the jet-lag. Chez Papa was NO exception. Truly sub standard food. Hub and I shared an omelet with mushrooms, ham, potatoes, and tomatoes...except tomatoes didn't make it into ours. Which is fine if the eggs are delicious (either light or fluffy or both) and alas they were none of the above - just a thick disk of overdone oeufs jammed with a pile of potato rounds shoved in the middle of the fold. With this said the waiter was very nice, but when I asked for beer with my bread and we laughed and figured I meant butter, he brought neither. Truly disappointing and expensive for what it was. One breakfast item and two beverages came to over 20 euro. read more

I had lunch here and ordered it to go (10% off take away meals). I had the Margaret Canard burger. The flavors were interesting to say the least, but they didn't really work for me. The duck was also a bit tough and made it difficult to eat the burger The potato fries that it came with were not bad. The saving grace was the portion size. It was unbelievable. Truly a great value of food for the price. You have the feeling to have travelled to South West of France as soon as you enter in this place. The staff makes you comfortable, you can order a drink (draft basque beer is available: Oldarki) while waiting for a table, most of the dishes are French South Western cuisine so a lot of duck meet, potatoes cooked in duck fat, etc. The portions are pretty important but some nice cakes are waiting for just in case you still have an empty space somewhere in your body. Any Parisian knows "Chez papa". This is a chain composed of a few restaurants. What can you expect from any of them? A friendly decor and staff, good simple food reasonably priced although it is sometimes on the verge of becoming a greasy spoon (though a pleasant one). It sometimes hits just the spot: service is quick, they can book large tables, and the general mood is just enough rowdy to spend a nice evening with a bunch of friends. read more
