I've been a regular customer ever since this place opened-- my parents and I would come and have Indian tacos every time I came though the Black Hills. My parents both knew the owners. My parents both passed away this year, and my husband and I drove out of our way to have lunch today. We weren't riding a Harley. When we pulled up, we were met by a woman emphatically pointing to a sign that said "motorcycles only," acting like we were idiots-- but we were just asking where we could park. She said, "well, it's motorcycle week." So I guess I'm not worth their business because I don't drive a motorcycle?? This used to be a place of memories with my parents-- but I'll never visit again. I even explained this to the lady who waved us off-- she couldn't care less. I have no problem with the bikers in the hills-- I share this beautiful place with them-- but it doesn't mean I should be refused service, especially a customer of 20-plus years. Very disappointed. When searching up specific foods that South Dakota is known for, the Indian Taco and Frybread came up as popular items. We ordered takeout from this restaurant and so I cannot speak to the dining experience. We arrived around brunch time, and it was around then that people slowly began to trickle in on the weekend. Of note, this was the only restaurant that comes up when you search "restaurants" on google maps in Cheyenne Crossing in the Black Hills in case anyone has trouble finding it on google maps. In addition, there is no service here by the way. The restaurant is attached to the gift shop, and there is a small gas station right outside as well. We just ordered their Indian Taco, which is basically a huge piece of thick frybread with various nacho toppings such as ground beef, sour cream, tomato, lettuce, cheese, and salsa. While it costs about $15, the size of this Indian Taco can feed you at least 2-3 meals, depending on how hungry you are. The takeout was quick to come out, and while we waited, we enjoyed some of the table games (nail balancing game, marble game, etc). read more

Mind you we had an Indian Taco at Four Corners at a run down wooden shack and an Indian lady prepared it. It was 5 stars. The food here was watered down chili and was not warm. The food was not very pleasing to eat. The fried bread under the taco dressing was okay, nothing like we had at Four Corners location. The restaurant/store had an "off putting" odor. I give this place 4 stars for being there. I was excited for the Indian tacos but have to say they were just ok for me. Needed more spice or hot sauce. Also they have no working bathrooms- just port a pottys. That was somewhat of a put-off for me. Still I'd stop again if in the area. read more

Not sure what is going on with the bathrooms, but I really don't enjoy having to use an outhouse at a restaurant. We went a few weeks ago and they had outhouses and bathrooms with out of service signs. I had hoped whatever was going on was fixed. (It is not). The food itself was "ok". We read so many good reviews and we thought we just have to try it, seeing that we were staying at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge down the street. We were very disappointed! We ordered a side of onion rings for $10.99, and you got seven onion rings on a bed of seasoned fries. We ordered onion rings because we wanted onion rings, not seasoned fries. We wouldn't have ordered the onion rings if we knew that we were just getting a half order of onion rings with fries. I ordered the barbecued rib starter, which came on a bed of season fries. I thought the ribs were good. My sister ordered a buffalo burger that was very dry. It came with regular french fries. They were also incredibly dry! We won't be back. read more

This place is AMAZING! We went for breakfast on the recommendation of a bar tender at Crow Peak Brewing Company. What a great drive to a great place. Dave welcomed us while handling a crazy busy restaurant and making us laugh. The servers are amazing and great, all while putting up with us deciding what we wanted. We should have split something. The portions are huge and tasty! We loved everything, especially the sourdough pancake, and the Must have carrot cake! We've been here a few times and there has always been problems with the temperature. Seriously, I think this time we were south of 50 degrees. People were wearing coats and shivering. Food... marginal at best. And the wait for the food in a tiny place with very few tables was unusually long. Maybe it helps to starve the customers as they freeze, and anything will taste good if they wait long enough. We asked for a coffee refill after the first cup was empty for twenty minutes and the second cup was sipped empty before we got our food. The waitress was unhappy until she presented our bill and then she was suddenly happy and cheerful. On the upside... there's a really nice giftshop that everyone waits in before they are seated. My wife and I stopped here for lunch on a recent vacation to the Black Hills on the advice of several locals. I wanted to like the place, and from the outside it was very interesting and seemed promising. It had that local old west hangout feel. Unfortunately, reality struck when you walked in the door. My first thought was "where's the restaurant"? All we saw was gift shop and aisles of souveniers and knick knacks. We wandered through the shop trying to find the restaurant with none of the employees providing a word of assistance or signs directing us to the restaurants entrance. I've only had one experience like this before wading through an overpriced gift shop to get to a Cracker Barrel restaurant, and the food was terrible. This seems to be "putting the cart before the horse", and it makes me think that the owners/managers believe the restaurant is an afterthought. It certainly let's you know where their priorities lay. This was an ominous beginning that played out with the food. We did find the entrance finally, where an employee asked if we wanted to be seated in the restaurant. She put us down on a list behind two other people while we looked on at empty tables. We were seated ten minutes later providing us with time to wander the gift shop and potentially buy something. You get the point. After being seated, the waitress came up immediately asking us for our order although we had just opened the menus. We asked for a minute, but since we were there for the indian tacos we ordered fairly soon after. The wait seemed long, but then the tacos are supposedly made to order. What we received was an unflattering rendition of the indian taco prominently displayed in a framed news article above our table. What we received was an indian taco with runny chili spilling onto our plates that the waitress actually apologized for, but still served. If you have to apologize for a dish why serve it? The serving of chili, salad, sour cream, and cheese was half the amount compared to the photo, and underwhelming. This felt a lot like the fast food commercials you see where the burger is gigantic and packed with condiments, but in reality when you buy it, it's half the size and poorly garnished and executed. The chili itself was not served hot, it was more room temperature, and surprisingly not very flavorful. The winners of the dish was the indian taco itself which was very good, but could have been warmer, and the salsa. We had been told that the indian tacos were made to order, but sadly this order felt like the plates had been premade and sitting out for a while. In any case, it was not hot or even warm food. It's also not a cheap meal at $11.99 for bread, chili, lettuce, sour cream, and cheese in the quantities we received. Sadly, we had ordered two tacos, and asked for one to "to go". The taco in the box was even worse, and looked like someone really didn't care about what they were serving the customer. Too bad, it was a long way to go for a poor indian taco. read more

Brunch at the Stage Stop inside Cheyenne Crossing store was such a treat! The history of this place goes all the way back to 1878! It literally was a stage stop back then!! They are famous for their Indian tacos - Indian fried bread with chili, cheese, onions, tomatoes, olives, and green peppers! The husband loved it! I settled for a pancake breakfast! Pancakes were sourdough and huge!! I saved my leftovers for our dog to enjoy - he said thank you, too! After the nice meal, shopping frenzy ensued. The shop has a lot of tchotchkes and souvenirs. I love getting a shot glass and ornaments from everywhere I visit. I found a funny shirt for my grandson, decorative kitchen towels for me, and so much more! The staff is very quaint, friendly, and accommodating. They run a tight clean business and seem to really enjoy their guests! Definitely add this spot to your South Dakota visit! read more

I've been dreaming about the Indian taco since I was in the area many years ago. Cheyenne Crossing was my one place I had to stop to eat on this trip. CC did not disappoint! The small taco was big enough for me, I was stuffed and loved every delicious bite! My 5 y/o grandson had one sourdough pancake that was the size of his plate, he also enjoyed his selection. He was happy they serve breakfast until 3pm. The 9 y/o grandson had chicken tenders/fries, not overly impressive. We took 2 carrot cakes to go and ate the next day. So glad we did since they were the real deal for a carrot cake lover! If you love carrot cake it's a must do! This place has grown, adding on more seating outside since the 15+ years ago I was here the last time, but still worth the stop! I already can't wait to return for another delicious meal. read more

Disappointing to say the least. We had been through here before and decided we'd try the restaurant during this trip. Waited fifteen minutes for a table (no biggie), immediately was waited on by the server and proceeded to wait an hour and fifteen minutes for our food which was less than thrilling. Fry bread was over cooked leaving it way too hard. It was darn near impossible to cut with the knife. Bacon was undercooked and greeeaaasssyy. Biggest rip-off of the day was the patty sausage. One patty no bigger diameter than a hockey puck and it was $4.59. I understand being a little pricey for this area, but woooowww. It might not be the last time we stop in, but certainly will be the last time we try the restaurant. Maybe try to warn customers next time when it's taking so long to get food before they sit there forever and waste a lot of time. read more

If I could give no stars I would. This was my first and last visit the lady at the front was rude and nasty. We had a party of 7 and they said an hr wait which was fine, but the problem came we where there for 30mins they I guess called our name which first wasn't right second I'm not gonna stand in gift shop with kids that's just accident waiting to happen so we went to their patio. They called us which we never heard and they scatched us off their list. Which is not really the problem however i requested to be added back to the list i was treated rudly and then when i watched the attendent finially put me back on the list she didnt even put the correct name on the liste service. This was one of our vacation highlights. We were staying in our RV for a week. Folks in Deadwood told us not to miss this place for a great breakfast. So happy we took their advice. I love homemade corned beef hash. The hash here is some of the best I have eaten. Man, I wish this place was close to home. I would be a regular. Caution, the portions are very big. We shared and were just fine. There is a cool gift store and some outside tables. Since this place has such a good reputation, there are a lot of out of state license plates in the parking lot. One star is too much for this establishment. June 16th we drive in to have breakfast. The yelp listing indicated that they have outside seating. Eating outside at a restaurant is recommended for social distancing in the age of COVID 19. We are a party of four and requested to seat outside and the women (about 5'2, longish blond hair and about 50 something) said, "We don't serve outside". I asked if we could order and take our food out to the patio and she said, no. I asked if we could order and take it to go and she said "no" in a snippy tone. Needless to say we left and was happily greeted up the road at the Latchstring. Great food and wonderful service.
