We only pulled into the gas station to use the restroom and noticed a small stand right next to it selling date shakes. Curiosity got the best of us and we're so glad it did. For around $7, the date shake was incredibly creamy, rich, and full of natural date flavor without being overly sweet. You can really taste the dates, and the texture was smooth with little pieces of dates and so satisfying, especially after a long drive. It was one of those unexpected treats that instantly puts you in a better mood. The location itself is super convenient if you're driving through the area, and it's honestly the perfect quick stop to break up the trip. What started as a simple bathroom break turned into a memorable food stop we'll definitely be looking forward to on future drives. We were pleasantly surprised by how good it was and are genuinely happy we stopped. This has officially become a must-stop for us every time we're heading back to Vegas. If you're passing through, don't skip it... get the date shake. You won't regret it.

How many people have memories of stopping at such a place in the family station wagon? The famous date shake is smooth and creamy with bits of date chopped real fine. It wasn't as sweet as I feared but just right considering how sweet dates are naturally. For $7 I think it's a decent deal. The place draws a good crowd and has all kinds of great things to munch on the road or take to friends.

But we wanted to gas up a bit, for safety, so we stopped by. It is kinda small, cramped, harder to come in and out. But it's convenient and since distances are so big within the park, it's great to have it around, as a peace of mind. Paid with a credit card, no issues, convenient, onward to the next spot!

When I visit Death Valley I see two landmarks of extremes. The first is Badwater, which is the…read morelowest point in the Western Hemisphere. The second is the Furnace Creek Service Station Chevron sign which shows the highest point in gasoline prices in the Western Hemisphere. Normally $5.56 per gallon gasoline prices would raise somebody's temperature over and above the recorded 134 degree high in Death Valley. Here is an example of the extremity of their fuel prices. On March 28, 2013 The Tribune talked over San Luis Obispo County having the most expensive gas in California. Their average is $4.27 per gallon. That is over a $1 less than the price shown on the Furnace Creek Chevron sign. Fortunately we filled up in Pahrump, and laughed this off as a joke. The laugh factor of the high gasoline prices at Furnace Creek Service Station are the equivalent of the high calories at the Heart Attack Grill. They might as well promote it in souveneirs that say something like "I survived the highest gas prices." Normally I would reward highway robbery (my perception) with one star. There are a couple of reasons I am rating it two stars. Having a gas station in the noman's land that is Death Valley is the better option of no gas station. The gas price sign makes a good picture. In hindsight I could of stood in front of it for a temporary profile picture. I also like a joke. Some things are so obnoxious I take it as a joke. Whenever I return to Death Valley I will fill up the fuel tank in Pahrump, Nevada or Baker California. If I fill up the fuel tank in Death Valley, the joke will be on me.
