Chesapeake Square Mall is going through a demolition phase of the old anchor stores like Macy's, JCPenney, and Sears. The rumor is the newly reclaimed space will be filled by modern stores like Dicks Sporting and Goods, Home Goods, etc. with a more open space between the stores atmosphere. The locals are looking forward to it. Hampton Roads Mall are modernizing for a more modern shopping experience. Yay, glad Chesapeake Square Mall is getting a new look and more desirable stores and shops. read more

This used to be a really great mall. It's in a perfect location as well. I hate to see that it's closing and I wish they would have done more to keep it open. read more

Before I begin this review let me start off by saying that this review is based solely on my opinion and my opinion alone so with that being said let's go!!.. There is not much I can say about this mall ever since they closed Macy's,JCPenney and even Sears! Those closing turned this mall into a ghost town.( this comment is based on what this mall once was ). There are still a few decent stores here that you can shop at so you can avoid driving a further distance to other malls in the area. This mall is conveniently located close by my residence so I'll shop here instead of driving further out,unless there is a store that is not available here then I may take the commute or I'll just order on line and have it delivered to my home! read more

It does the job...if you like department stores that is. Not too much variety in here. But it's convenient for me. Never crowded here. Well unless it's a major holiday, but on any given weekend...not packed at all. Definitely call the stores ahead time before you go. As some stores on the directory are no longer apart of Chesapeake Square. But there is a nice play area for children about 6 and under. There is a food court with about 10 eateries. Also you have Sears, Macys, JcPenny, Burlington Coat Factory. Again..it does the job. If you need something quick you have a few stores to choose from. In a way, that makes shopping easy...in and out! read more

I enjoy this mall because it has reasonable price stores. It could use a few more stores not just to replace the vacant stores but because more options is always a good thing. It is a safe, clean and climate controlled environment for everyone. Moms and tots having their meet ups in the play area, seniors drinking coffee and making laps around the building. The childs play area, a new children run and play area for big kids is a nice addition. A big kid arcade would be nice doesn't have to be a big Dave and Busters but along that scale. If we had bigger name stores more people would shop here. Heading in the direction of an outside mall would be a nice change for the area and landscape view. read more

I've been living in Western Branch for 8 years now and this mall is dwindling down. From what I am told, it's gone bankrupt and it's days are numbered. It has all the typical stores you would find in a mall, but Sears and Macey's both moved out. It has a food court and only two other restaurants...Big Woody's and Tilted Kilt. I have not eaten at either one. I am surprised that Tilted Kilt chose this mall over anything in VA Beach or Norfolk. I would expect there are better locations in Hampton Roads for the single male Sailors to visit this place. The Target department store and movie theater is probably the only two places that bring me back here. I also visit Rack Room Shoes as needed. Even my wife and daughter don't come here often. There is a Burlington Coat Factory and JC Penny but who knows how long they will last. McArther Center and Greenbriar Malls are better choices. read more

What was once a bustling shopping center, is now near abandoned and struggling to stay alive. Two major department stores, Macy's and Sears, have closed up shop in the last year. This shell of a mall now houses only a few no name retailers. The management will consider leasing to just about anyone willing to pay rent. A prime example would be the kids bounce house that occupies what used to be three retail storefronts. Developers keep trying to revamp the various shopping centers around the mall, but the mall itself only suffers more. I think Chesapeake Square's days are numbered. read more

The mall is one now that I only go to if I need to pick up something and don't have time to do somewhere else. Many stores have left the mall and they have lost some of the big retailers such as Sears and Macy's. You find many of the stores that are opening up are small non franchise low budget stores. When I was outside the mall last weekend parking to go to the neighboring movie theatre there is an increased crowd of young people that seem to gather outside the mall and an increased police presence to continue to try to break up. This was not the first time. Hopefully they will revamp this mall but till then I will be limiting my shopping experiences. read more

In my experience, once a mall turns 20, it needs an overhaul. And if it never gets that makeover, it's about to get demolished...OR, it has taken the title of the worst mall in Hampton Roads. Chesapeake Square is 26 years old, and looks it. I remember when this mall first opened and it was amazing...not just because I was a seven year old. It was vibrant, busy, and new and everything Chesapeake and Portsmouth needed. Now, if you live in Portsmouth and need to go to the mall, you should go thru the toll for MacArthur. Likewise with Chesapeake, or even head to Greenbrier. When Burlington Coat Factory and Target are your anchor stores, you are in trouble. That's Chesapeake Square Mall. They also have a JCPenney, and I feel like it does well, but what competition does it have? The Macy's is one floor and crammed. I swear it's not like any other Macy's you've ever been to. I only come here for Hallmark. Otherwise, the best thing in this mall is the food court. read more

This weekend, my dad and I unexpectedly would up here after leaving MacArthur center because I realized that I had to find a Target so I could get my prescription filled before we got back to Wakefield. So we wound up here. The last time I had visited here was in the late 1990's when I was a teenager. Back then I thought this mall was great, it had all the stores that a teenager in the late 90's would've liked, like Afterthoughts, and Gadzooks, and such. Well, none of that remains today. While the mall has all its anchor stores (Sears, Macys, JC Penney and Target) the inside of the mall has become junky. There are too many mom and pop stores in the mall with junky and tacky merchandise (one store that was going out of business was full of overpriced knick knacks including "plauqes" of stock photo images of celebrities and some facts about them that everybody and their cousin knows). There was also an annoying attraction for kids that included kids being strapped to bungee cords and jumping on an inflated trampoline that took up a large chunk of the mall. Also, this mall has no clear design. Everything is so stark and white, there is no comforting color scheme or design. It's sort of reminiscent of the way Patrick Henry Mall in Newport News used to look like before their 2005-2006 redesign. I only went into two anchor stores, Macys and Target. The Target is smaller than most Targets since it is a mall location, but it looks outdated, and the store is poorly laid out. The items for a dorm room were not in one section like at other Targets, it was scattered everywhere. I walked into Macys while waiting for my prescription at Target, and the makeup section was laughable. The outside of the mall also looks dirty, the Sears looked like it had some sort of smoke damage on the outside. It definitely needs a repainting or a powerwashing. read more

This dated mall as been all but forgotten. Many shops closed up for good, and those that are open, are not main line. If you are looking to do some serious shopping, go somewhere else. Big stores like target and jcpenny hold it together. read more

Very small and not too many stores to choose from. Other than that it's a great spot to find a deal or catch a sale going on at the larger department stores. This is a great place if you aren't looking for a huge crowd while accomplishing your shopping needs, also if you want to catch a movie, there is a theater on the outskirts of the mall that you can easily walk to. read more

What a hell hole. Unfortunately this is the closet mall to me and until January 2012 I solely came here for the Gap and Gap kids but now sadly it is closed. What else does this place have? Let me put it like this: there's a Piccadilly's cafe in the mall. That's pretty much all you need to know. I've heard rumors they're going to tear it down and do a town center to match that nice new movie theater next to it. Great idea. I remember when this mall was cool, and it was a LONG time ago. I rarely go here anymore because half of the stores are empty or the stores that are there are just not things I'm interested in. This mall has a few department stores such as JC Penney, Sears, Macy's and Target. Some other stores that are in this mall are The Gap, American Eagle, Journeys, Spencers, Hallmark store, Fashion Bug, and Claires. There is also an arcade in the middle of the mall which is actually kind of cool. There is also a decent sized food court that includes a Chick-Fil-A and a Wendys. If you're in the Chesapeake area, I'd say go to Greenbrier Mall before you go to Chesapeake Square. read more

I rarely come here to shop, but my daughter needed a pick me up, so we went walking to see what is left inside. So many empty stores and so many that don't appeal to us. At this point I think it would be better to drive farther to a better mall than waste time here. read more

This was the happening place at one time but unfortunately it's become completely lackluster lately. There are more empty stores than occupied ones and I swear I saw a tumbleweed roll by the food court last time I was there. This mall used to have two Dillards locations but they have both closed down. There is a Target inside of this mall which is perhaps its only redeeming quality. Maybe it's because I remember a time when this mall thrived, and that makes its present day condition even more sad to me. As others have previously stated, this mall does the job. I find myself coming here a lot since it is the only mall on the Portsmouth side of the river. Because the stores themselves are a lot smaller than other malls in the Hampton Roads area, I never find everything on my shopping list here. read more

I wouldn't drive far to shop at Chesapeake Square Mall, but it works if you are in the area. The department stores are decent, and the Target anchor store is always useful, even if you aren't going into the mall. Some of the mall stores are lame, but the basics remain: Gap, Icing, Gymboree, Aeropostale, Abercrombie and so on. I like the mongolian bbq in the food court and the Mrs. Field's cookies for a mid-mall snack. I wouldn't shop here though, unless I lived close by and it was my only convenient option. It's actually a good size mall but they could use some good stores. There are quite a few open spaces. Also they used to have an awesome go out golf. But the last time we were there we found out the rude man who owned the business next door offered the mall twice the rent to take over the space. Chesapeake Square mall really doesn't have much to it. Walking through here, you will find mostly empty spaces and stores that make you surprised that they manage to stay in business. If you live in Virginia Beach, this mall is comparable to Pembroke Mall--nothing special (although Pembroke may now have a leg up with its art center). There's your typical department stores and chain stores, a food court and an arcade. If you're not close by, I would suggest you save the gas and head to another mall. read more

I Like going there for the food court not many places to eat but American Burger has the best food/ice cream and very good prices, the mall was once a thriving place but has gone down hill since Macy's left and Walmart built next door but if a big name ( Dave and Busters) was to come in i think it would rejuvenate the mall but i love going there anyways and will continue till they close the doors. read more

This a mall that has always had potential but never made it. The best things they have to offer is a decent theater, target, and location. Inside the mall is clearly in decline. Outside the mall is doing everything they can to build the outer ring which is doing ok. This appears to be a poor management. read more

Plus a new movie theatre that is soooo nice! If you just shop these places & don't enter the mall itself, it's not so bad. When you enter the mall, It's intimidating. Too many "wrif wraf" hanging out. There are great smaller stores, Bath & Body, New York, Hallmark, Gymboree, Stride Rite, Footlocker, Body Central and more. The food court is spacious. Just not a huge selection of places to eat. Chinese, Chic-Fa-La, a burger place, Sabarros. I really hope our little mall comes around & some new blood enters. They should do some updating & painting.
