Kitsch is a German term for tacky/cheesy stuff that has sentimental or ironic appeal. When I strolled into this cute artsy store (nook) in Ghent, I had to smile knowing they nailed the name. They sell a variety of trinkets, crafts, art and knickknack objects that are all locally handmade; among my faves are their unique greetings cards and repurposed skateboard deck items (coasters, slim card wallets, keychains). Other items intrigued me and made me chuckle but fell into the category of "cool but I'm not buying it." To each their own! Additionally, they offer weekly craft events and classes (tile, sewing and majpodge). Check them out to support local while scoring some one of a kind gifts. Typical Ghent street parking available. It's on a one way street so if you see a space, snag it.

Ah-dorable crocheted narwhal!

Super cute handmade store in Norfolk! They have a wide variety of products at a wide variety of price points and each item is handmade in Virginia. My heart was stolen by an ah-dorable little crocheted narwhal. Swoon. They also have a variety of special events and craft-y classes. Today they we're setting up for a 'Kid's Shopping Night' for Christmas, complete with hot cider and a card making/wrapping station. Can't wait to get back there and check out a craft night or their beginner sewing class!

I'm looking for a chalkboard artist, can you assist?

Yes! Sorry for the delayed response. You can look up Kimberly Munn of Maple and Belmont. She's wonderful!

This place is a real hidden gem! Walked in off the street with my girlfriends and had an awesome…read moretime browsing the home and garden wares inside. Reasonable prices and some really nice decorative garden items. They have some indoor decor stuff: mercury glass and florals and planters but a lot of the stuff is outdoor planter pots and aged metal decor items. In the back there is a beautiful garden and an event space for photos or parties or weddings. We talked to the owner for a while who was very friendly and said they he had redone the event space in the back and set it up for parties and such. I saw a few things that looked great for my backyard when I'm ready to accessorize it. I'll be back!

Omg I am obsessed with this place. It is now a "must stop" when I'm in Portsmouth. I spent over 30…read moreminutes just browsing around the store and left full of ideas for my garden. A garden that I haven't even planted yet, but am now inspired to make happen next spring! The first thing you've gotta do is check out their courtyard. It is stunning. Great place to get a new profile picture. So peaceful! Then you can browse the many different rooms. I'm not sure how many items were actual antiques, but they all had that antique vibe. They had a lot of coastal themed items naturally, but the prices were much lower than what you would find similar items for in Virginia Beach. We were greeted when we arrived and then left to do our own wandering. Masks were worn by all and if I remember correctly they even have hand sanitizer by the front door! This spot is a hidden gem in Portsmouth with so many hidden treasures waiting for you!

This place is so cool and eclectic! It's the store that used to be under Elliot's Fairgrounds, but…read morethe lady working said this was a better spot- more out in the open. I loved everything inside, and wanted to buy one of everything! If you're looking for a gift for almost anyone, this is a good spot to check out. The prices were pretty reasonable, but some were a bit pricey (to be expected). I can't wait to go back for another gift!

Shop local like you mean it and you won't be disappointed at Texture!…read more After many years, Texture has relocated out of the quaint house on Baldwin Avenue to serve its customers in a more convenient location just a few blacks down on Colley Avenue. The new location is nestled next to Running, Etc and across the street from Blair Middle School. It boasts ample street parking with a convenient side parking lot for customers as well. A beautiful store-front window is always displayed to perfection bringing window shopping to life during your stroll down Colley Avenue. A charming sidewalk chalkboard sign greets you before you even enter the store. The handiwork on the sign is done by a local artist which speaks to the nature of Texture. As you enter the shop, you will find it proudly supports local artists of Coastal Virginia from Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, and more. I'm always impressed by the jewelry, hand designed greeting cards, pottery, and accessories that the owner finds for the store. She or any other "Texurette" will happily tell you about the origins of any item. The ladies who work in the shop (Texurettes, as they are fondly called) are always friendly and helpful if you are looking for something particular. They offer complimentary gift wrapping in adorable gift bags tied with ribbon. Every time I give a gift in a Texture bag the recipients eyes light up! You will find a price range for every wallet. I have bought $2 hand soaps, hilarious dishes towels for $10 as well as beautiful jewelry in the higher price range. Texture is one of those local shops who truly supports local as well. I love both that they give back to the community and support local artists. It is definitely the ideal place to find a gift for any occasion. They have a baby boutique with one of a kind baby gifts, vintage inspired puzzles, funny gifts such as socks and dish towels, coastal decor, jewelry, handbags, pottery, candles and more. I'm not sure how the owner did it, but the move to their new location only brought more of that local charm with them to Colley Avenue. They are still serving up friendly southern greetings to every customer while making their new shiny store feel ever so welcoming. Kudos!
