As contractors, we have over the year's encountered different kinds of "Customer Service" from our supply shops. Some good, some bad, some great and many we wish we would never experience again. This letter is in regard to my latest visit to this business on 13May24. I am not sure if it is the Cherokee Lumber MGMT that is in charge of, or encourages the type of customer service you receive at their business, or if it is just the dregs that they dig up from the employee pool that is now commonplace in the world. If your life is good, your health is great, and the world could not be a better place for you, but you just want to experience something new. Well then, just go visit CHEROKEE LUMBER, they will, unwittingly help you achieve this goal. They will make your life feel meaningless, worthless and that there is no help for you at all. First, they will NEVER acknowledge you when you enter their door. When you finally get up to the counter, if you're lucky, you will get a "yeah" or "what do you want". And never ask where anything is because they will, at best, point you in the "hopefully" correct direction, but only after spewing some enlightening words like "it's over there somewhere" or "we don't carry it". Did they get off of their chair to help you? Not a chance! Also, don't try to start any conversation with them, because as soon as another employee walks up, you WILL be forgotten, and it may be a long time before they complete your transaction! I am not stating any of this from just one visit, but in my over thirty years of helping my clients, I have had the pleasure of experiencing this unpleasant service many times. Why you ask would I keep going back? Because I have hope, that one day things will change. There is a saying, that only an Idiot will keep doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result, well, this Idiot just spent his last time gracing their doorway. If you choose to use this business in the future, I can only hope that just maybe the MGMT will have read my letter and make a few changes. Probably not, but one can dream. Here is the email I directed to the owners: Hi Pete, Hi Dee Dee, My name is Jack and I am a hobby woodworker. I started about 2 years ago.l I live in San Jacinto and you are the closest lumber source to me, other than you know who. I have enjoyed making small projects, mostly jigs. But now I'm ready to move up to a better class of wood. Been using material from Home Depot.....plywood with lots of voids and construction grade 2X4s that have been improperly dried. Got a new project and want to use Red Oak. I got a very nice quote from your sales team and I ended the last email with See you this afternoon. You are 60 miles from me so I got there just before noon. The woman at the cashier stand took my quote (I had brought it with me) and said it would be a few minutes. Snooped around for about 15 min and asked her how the order is doing. She made a call and said it will be soon. Then she excused herself the a back room. Waited about 25 more minutes and asked the man at the cashier stand what the progress was. He made a call then told me the guy who cuts the wood was at lunch. I asked if there were any others who could cut my order. He told me there is one other guy but he isn't here today. Then he told me my order MIGHT be ready Tuesday! Wait, Pete. You are a lumber dealer. You cut lumber to order for profit. All your employees know they work at a lumber yard. I just received my European Beech shelf. I ordered some 5/4 lumber to complete a shelf for my Beech office cabinetry above my desk. Not an easy item to source. The wood is beautiful and cut precisely as I requested. It's exceptional quality with ideal graining and texture. I am thrilled with how helpful Chris was in finding the wide piece I needed and turning my order around quickly!!! The wood was packed meticulously to avoid damage and arrived without incident. I want to like this place but I feel each time I go the customer service is worse and worse. The workers would rather sit up by the counter and talk to themselves or go outside and smoke... than actually provide help. Don't believe me? I bet you could walk around there for over an hour without even one person acknowledging your existence... much less offer help. I guess they have off and on days depends who's working hence why I gave them an extra star. I came here with my mother to look at different base boards that they had to offer. A worker who was working with a customer looked a bit frantic on the computer. My mom asked him, "Excuse me, Can you show me..." INSTANTLY he cut her off saying I'm with someone, can't help you! VERY DISRESPECTFUL!! So I took things into my own hands and looked around and found all the base boards (They had a chart on some gate). I gestured her over that I found them. Again, the worker was acting like she wasn't waiting for an answer. Oh! By the way, other workers kept passing her up not even acknowledging her. Also saw a worker helping a customer talking with him giving him pricing and all. Anywho, we started pulling out different base boards standing back, absurbing to see what we liked and didn't like, as I'm putting one back I looked up down by the register.... I kid you not! About 4 to 5 men looking at us from afar. Not offering no help, no suggestions, NOTHING!!! I was about to take a photo just to prove my point of this place, but they weren't worth it! After a while pulling base boards and putting them back, we made a decision and we were satisfied. We took notes and pictures. Again, no one walked up to give us pricing no nothing just wanted to stand back and stare. As soon as we were done and we were heading out, ALL OF THE SUDDEN... one of the men say oh if you need help 2 workers are in the front. Oh! You mean one of the guys who was just standing back looking at us the whole time? This customer service was a WHOLE JOKE and needs SOOOO much work! I've worked with customers and the public for years! NEVER would I dismiss someone no matter how frantic I am! My mother has came here before and someone really nice helped her but this visit was shocking to me. So ladies, if you want to get stared down and gawked at while no one offers to help you and it wasn't even on a busy day, come here I guess. This place needs to do better! read more

I'm a hobbyist woodworking, primarily making furnitures, so read this review with that in mind... I'm going to review the 4 lumber yards that I frequent, Peterman, Cherokee, Reel, and Austin and will rate them against each other using Austin Hardwoods as gold standard... Customer service: 4 stars... the people here are usually friendly and helpful. I don't think they are woodworkers, so their knowledge on that is somewhat limited. They do know about their own products. They charge money to rip the plywood and it seems like it's random... sometimes it's free and sometimes it's $1 a cut? Product selection: 3 stars... they have a pretty limited selection in terms of lumber and plywood. They have all the usual suspects but not too much more and certainly not too many exotic wood. They have a good selection of moulding and baseboards. Actual product: 3 stars... the plywood that I have purchased from here are not the highest quality... the veneer seems rougher than other places and the ply have more voids. Summary for this place: this place is definitely catered to contractors... DIYers, not so much. read more

I stumbled upon these bad reviews just checking out reviews of places I frequent and I don't believe some of these situations went down like this. I have been going to Cherokee for about 10 years and never had an issue. Yeah, I might have to wait but it's because the employees are busy, they definitely are not just standing there talking with each other. I don't believe that reviewer was hung up on, but if he was, they probably thought it was a prank call. 4 sheets of MDF to be delivered 120 miles away? I also don't believe they busted someones back window and just shrugged it off if one of the employees loaded it up. Stuff like this is why they don't load up your material unless you are helping them. They have always helped me if I needed it with the heavier stuff. Again, I have been going there for years and none of these complaints I have seen. read more

I have had (what I would say) is probably the worst experience ever with Cherokee wood products. I placed an order on April 24th, it is now May 12th and I still have not received one stick of wood from Cherokee wood products. When my order for around a thousand dollars of wood was placed the person helping me used the wrong address for shipping so it went to the wrong state. After he got the address correct, he then gave me the incorrect tracking number. I just recieved my order May 15th (3 week plus delivery time). The quality of the wood is very good. The problem I had with online orders is this - if you pay with PayPal, they use the address associated with your PayPal account, even if you give them the proper address to ship too (like a client site) it will still go to the PayPal account address. I would suggest if you are buying online to make sure you tell the person helping you to get the address correct and triple check it. Other then the delivery mess the quality of the wood is very, very good. read more

Their staff is efficient and helpful in every part of the transaction. No matter your knowledge of a lumber mill, they are eager to educate you so you are confident in what you are purchasing. I am a female woodworker and this is the first mill that takes the time to know your name and wants to build a great relationship with their customers. I like Cherokee for purchasing sheet goods. They don't always have what I need in stock but are conveniently located and let me know by phone when items come back in stock. I didn't think I would actually get a call back, but a week later I was notified. Appreciate the follow up with is rare these days. read more

I have no idea what they stock or the quality of their products; however, I called hoping to get some 4x6 ripped and they were clearly not interested in helping anyone outside of store patrons, which I understand, but when speaking to customer service, they made me feel like I was a bother, or that it was an absurd request. The response was,"eh, we don't really...well, we could do it, but it's going to be really expensive". Totally could be an isolated incident, but it was my experience...just not the coolest customer service experience. read more

Been here once before for crown molding, they have a good selection to choose from but didn't like that they don't load it up for u. My second visit I was going to be cutting it close to closing time, so I called them to ask if they could just hold out for an extra 5 minutes but they wouldn't. I got there right at 2 pm(there closing time). And they had already locked everything down. I could see them inside but they wouldn't even acknowledge me. I have no doubt that Cherokee has great products. But customer service and practical business things are lacking. I drove 25 miles to look at hardwood flooring at the suggestion of my contractor. My husband and I arrived on a Saturday around 9:30 am (open 8-12 on Saturdays) and there were 3 employees -- one smoking at the door and two at the counter. No one looked up or greeted us and I finally asked if I could go into the doors leading to the hardwood floor section and was told I could. After 10 minutes in there and no one coming in, I went back out. There were no customers at the counter and the two employees were chatting with each other. I finally asked if someone could give me a general intro to the hardwood flooring room so that I had an idea of prices. One employee spoke up and said, "when I finish here, I can get you some help" (remember, he was chatting with the other employee when I arrived and didn't seem to be working so there was nothing to "finish"). I went back in the flooring room, only to have a third employee (the smoker from my arrival time) come in and say, "The boss is out on Saturday and locks up the price list so you are welcome to take pictures but you'll have to call him on Monday to get prices." That's not a good way to run a business and I'm not likely to drive 50 miles roundtrip during the week, as the business closes around 5 pm each day. Perhaps all signs should say that the lumber part of the business is open on Saturday but the flooring part is closed if no one can help in any way. The general idea that a customer is an intrusion on a chatty conversation with a fellow employee means there is a genuine lack of customer service orientation. You need to do better Cherokee Wood Products! read more

I have worked with Cherokee wood products for numerous projects on my home and every time I am impressed with the friendliness and professionalism of their employees. I have priced things at big box and other retail locations and Cherokee always comes out the best. Today I called to finish off a few matching items from my project in 2015 and they had the records at their fingertips to make sure I got the same matching products. I've shopped here for both moldings and lumber for cabinets. They have the best prices on moldings (way cheaper than home depot or lowes by far) and plywood, so it's worth the extra drive to save some money and get better quality wood! But like Guillermo said, better be there during stated business hours, because they don't wait around... definitely more for the contractor crowd than the DIY'er. But I just can't beat the prices and selection. read more

For all the Naysayers about Cherokee wood products: Im sorry you had trouble in the store but I have to say that the employees are the most friendly and helpful people. Especially when you show them a little respect as a person and not someone that needs to jump at your beck and call. Some of the negativity in the previous comments clearly are from an angry ex employee and just not true. The bald guy happens to be one of the nicest men I've ever met. So if you need a large selection of in stock moldings and sheet goods, Cherokee is the place to go. And if it's something special you need, they will order it for you and have it next day. read more

I called Cherokee to order a few sheets of mdf board and the guy on the phone was extremely unpleasant. His demeaner and comments were very rude and unprofessional. I asked if we can have the 4 sheets shipped to San Diego and he said "not just for 4 sheets" than hung up on me. after 3 years asa customer, I will not be ordering from them again. read more

Went to Cherokee to pick up some baseboards for a friend. One of the employees there busted the back window to my Ford F-250 and no one even apologized or came out and spoke to me! The employee did all the handling and it wasn't even my fault! At least he could have said let me pay for half, let me work with you, a management representative could have apologized, but we got absolutely nothing from them. Conveniently, there is a sign up indicating their company is not liable for any damage done to your car. Really? They might not be liable, but I wasn't the customer, I was assisting a friend! This company has insurance and at least they could have offered to pick up half the charges or do some type of ethical action, even apologize or SOMETHING???. I'm so disappointed in this company and do not recommend anyone to go there. read more

I've been frequenting Cherokee for over 10 years and have always appreciated the selection, price and service. I do understand the few comments about the staffs personalities as they are not your typical bubbly sales people but my experience has been much different. I found that the customer service was excellent, the pricing was very good and the quality of the products was better then at any of the big box stores. I really liked the fact that the warehouse very clean and that they had a showroom unlike some other places we had been. My wife and I ended up getting our hardwood flooring from them as well as our baseboards, door and window casings and our crown moldings. I went to Cherokee Wood Products looking for a baseboard to match my existing for a small patch job. Josh knew immediately which molding it was ... and lucky me, it's a special order than comes in minimum 16' lengths. I only needed two 6 inch pieces. Josh looked through his samples and found one 3 inch piece, which he gave me. He could have stopped there, but he offered to contact the manufacturer and request two 6 inch samples. He called when they came in (2 busn days) and I picked them up today. WOW ... I call that great customer service, and way more than I asked for or expected. We are new to the Upland area and purchased an older home. I went to Cherokee Wood Products, after visiting two other moulding and flooring companies, not knowing what I was really looking for. The staff in the warehouse was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. The gentleman even helped me pick my top three flooring samples to take home. Because of the quality and pricing we decided to put new wood flooring throughout our entire home. To this day, we are bombarded with compliments. We always recommend people to Cherokee. We have even had two separate family members, who both live 3 hours away, travel down and purchase flooring from them. We are all beyond thrilled with our experience in dealing with this business and will continue to purchase from Cherokee whenever we make home improvements! read more
