We came here for lunch on a Monday at about 1pm and had the War Won Ton Soup and fried shrimp and it was yummy. I was hesitant cause a Chinese restaurant in Long Beach...yeah right...but the food is great and service was great too. The War wonton soup was large and cost of $10.95 each..:we could have shared cause it was that much. The soup had BBQ pork, like 6 pork wontons, lots of hearty vegetables (broccoli, snow peas, carrots, celery), chicken and noodles. Wow! Horrible, they can't even make Asian food. Their egg rolls were just scraps, and the potstickers were frozen foods u can buy in a grocery store. Everything about the food was off so we left without getting the rest of what we ordered. Disgusting. read more

Tucked away at the end of town, it is almost hidden. The family (all 6) spent a full day on the beach and we were sunbaked, hungry and tired. The youngest two kids have been asking the entire trip for Chinese food so we pull in on our way back to cabin. Clean, open big tables. Good service. Took orders quickly. Egg Soup was so good we ordered a big bowl. Our individual dinners all came exactly as ordered/modified. Overall great experience but I still feel I should explain the 3 stars. I knew better than to get Chinese food outside of either Portland or Seattle, but I was feeling a noodle soup. What I got was technically a noodle soup, but with...spaghetti noodles. Now, there are a lot of Asian noodles to choose from. Even if it's unconventional to use "chow mein" noodles, like lo mein, I would have shrugged. But spaghetti noodles? Ain't nothing Chinese about that. When I asked the Chinese waitress, in Chinese, she confirmed it was spaghetti noodles and thought it strange. And that I should have ordered the Wonton noodles, which have, you know, normal noodles that go in a broth. It was a very strange experience. After we got our food, and after I talked at length to the Chinese waitress who gave me to-go boxes, we waited 10 minutes for our check. It never came. Eventually, we went up to the counter and paid. On our way out, I ran into some Chinese women who were complaining about the fried rice they got the night before. So the take home message is, if you're Chinese, avoid this place. With that said, We love chinese food and were happy to see this place open on Monday after driving by several other restaurants which were closed on Monday. We have eaten at many chinese places in various states and this place was horrible!!! The taste of the 4 different dishes we ordered were not good! The three chicken dishes were breaded so thick it was hard to find any chicken meat and several pieces were just deep fried breading with NO MEAT!! The Pork Fu Young was so hard we could almost not cut it with a fork. The Porch Chow Mein had very few vegetables and had very little to No Flavor. We really enjoyed Chen's last night. Like everyone else says, it's what American people expect when they go out for Chinese food outside of an International District. My husband had the special beef (hehe) while I had a combo with Kung Pao and Chicken Chow Mein. Everything was served super hot and tasted great. I was hoping the Kung Pao would be spicier, but the waiter brought me some chili sauce that fixed it up. The egg roll appy is realllllly good, and the egg flower soup was easily the best I've had. It is easy to over order here because what they don't tell you is that for $10, you get a ginormous plate of food!! We are having leftovers for lunch today. Service was exceptionally friendly. Small town Chinese restaurants are usually hit or miss... When you're hungry for rice, you follow your gut, literally, and get Chines food and deal with the consequences later. We ordered Crab Rangoon's, Beef Chow Mein, and Vegetable Chow Mein, and plain rice. Kept it simple for 2 adults and 2 very picky kids. We ate so fast and with plenty of left overs. The noodles were full of vegetables (broccoli, snow peas, water chestnuts, sliced onions, shredded carrots, baby corn, and FRESH mushrooms!) Big portions! Overall, it was much better than expected! We would definitely go back when we visit Long Beach! I feel good supporting this family owned business. read more

Most every year we find ourselves in Long Beach, WA, for fishing or kiteflying, such a great getaway. The drawback in this town is that reliable food is difficult to find. Places you think would be acceptable dish up trash for unbelievable prices. We have always enjoyed our visits to Chens. All of the 'family' style dinners are oriented around what I call 'AmeriChinese' dishes; you know, the stuff my parents (your grandparents) called chinese; almond-fried chicken swimming in gravy, sweet&sour chicken, deep fried prawns, chicken chow mein (using the deep fried noodles, not soft ones). So this place does very well serving up really good 'bad' chinese food, that I normally would never order. But its like 'old school' week, and to get a great deal on dinner (family style), we go with it, and it is indeed tasty. My teenage sons LOVE it. The platters came heaping with deep fried prawns, the chicken chow mein had fresh vegetables, and the BBQ pork portions were thick and generous. And while everything normally comes with eggflower soup, the waiter let me have hot-n-sour, and it was pretty good, right amount of vinegar. The wait staff was plentiful, swift, pleasant and gracious. In a tourist fishing town that curiously seems to shut down @ 6, Chens is open late (along with McDs and Subway). My boyfriend and I came to Long Beach on a weekend trip. As a new tradition we've been trying to find a Chinese restaurant to go to for dinner in each town we visit. We were told Chen's was the only Chinese cuisine in town. I read the reviews on this place and was nervous but optimistic. I really really wanted to like the food here and was hoping to be pleasantly surprised.....Unfortunately the negative reviews seem pretty spot on : ( THE FOOD: I ordered the appetizer plate which came with Egg rolls, BBQ Pork (with pretty good dipping sauce), Crab Rangoon type things, and Fried Shrimp. My boyfriend ordered the Almond Chicken Chow Mein. **The BBQ Pork was very dry and tough, though the dipping sauce was very good. I ate one piece and my boyfriend ate one piece and we both decided not to have any more. My boyfriend actually refused to try the Egg Roll but I gave it a chance. It was pretty soggy and seemed like it had been refrigerated, re-breaded, and then fried. I did not take more than one bite. The fried shrimp was okay but there was a LOT of breading (I agree with the review that said there was more breading than there was shrimp). The Crab Rangoon things with cream cheese were actually pretty good but again, a LOT of fried dough (or wonton wrapper) compared to the filling. My boyfriend's Almond Chicken Chow Mein wasn't bad, but it unfortunately wasn't very good either. *They did have a very large list of cool sounding cocktails on the back of the menu if you're into that sort of thing but we didn't order any. THE SERVICE: We waited a few minutes to be greeted because everyone seemed to be in the kitchen but the server who greeted us was very friendly and accommodating. She checked on us frequently and was very pleasant. THE RESTAURANT: The restaurant was pretty small, clean, and quiet. There were probably 20 or so booths and then a back room with tables. My hubby and I go to Long Beach many many times during the year and have been for a number of years. We have our favorite places we visit EVERY time - it's tradition, however, we'd never eaten at Chen's and boy have we been missing out! Their food is soooo good! Prices are great, portions are big (we had lots of left overs) and the staff is super nice. Now we understand why their parking lot is always full! While in Long Beach this last time, some friends of ours that we were visiting insisted that we try Chen's because it was the "Best Chinese Food" they had ever had. I am always skeptical when people preface a place like that. Prior to going, I checked out their reviews here on Yelp and having been to Long Beach before, thought the chamber might not like Asian's or something because the rating was lower than most. Yes, I believe that Long Beach has a conspiracy, most establishments have 70 to 80 reviews and are all four and five stars but if you actually visit these places, they are mediocre to terrible. SO, because our friends wanted to go here, I thought why not. Well, the service was good, the restaurant was clean, but that's about where the positives stop. The food was just "Meh", in fact I think I have had better from Panda Express, and well that's just terribly, white washed, Chinese crap. We ordered one of the family dinners, the portions were more than enough, we had a to-go box for each of the entrees they brought us. Of all of them that we had, the General's chicken was the best. None of the dishes were even remotely spicy, including one of my all-time favorites, "Kung-Pao Chicken" which didn't even have a pepper in site. It was a let down really. We did order the Supreme Sampler to start, which was decent. I liked the egg rolls and the shrimp, their sweet and sour sauce they bring is different but the mustard, barely mild in spice level. Well, we were at Chen's in Long Beach Sunday night. After having read all the positive reviews about this place on Yelp!, I'm convinced that we must have entered a mystical portal of some kind when we walked through the door of Chen's, and it sent us elsewhere. Seriously, we did not eat at 'the best Chinese restaurant ever'. Not by a long shot. The egg flower soup was good. That's where the positive accolades end. The food is deeply fried. The egg roll was so bad that I had to cut it open, and take out the food inside from the armor-like, deep fried shell. The sweet and sour pork and sweet and sour chicken were also deeply fried, beyond recognition. And the almond chicken was prepared the same way as the sweet and sour chicken, but with just a different sauce drenched over it. The pork fried rice was cold, but even if it were warm, I can't imagine it tasted any better. We had 'crab puffs'. They were so deeply fried that I'd call them 'crab crunches', not puffs. Ugh. It's so disrespectful to treat crab so poorly. We left more than 60% of our food on our plates. "No, thank you, we don't need it boxed to go." The water was really good. Easily the second best thing we had, after the egg flower soup. As we were driving home, we were thinking, 'Man, I wish we'd had just gone to McDonald's.' Someone else wrote that Chen's was worse than Panda Express. That person should be given an award! Panda Express looks like a Gordon Ramsey restaurant next to Chen's. The only other positive aspect that might be influencing people to write positive reviews of Chen's is this: It is remarkably cheap. A four-item combo (ex. Pork Fried Rice, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Egg Roll, and Almond Fried Chicken, served with Egg Flower Soup) is only $10.75. But $10.75 is still a rip off when the food is barely edible. read more

The new owners know nothing about Chinese food. This used to be my grandmother's favorite restaurant, she would be shocked to see what has happened to it. My wife and I went there a few weeks ago and our chow mein did not have any noodles in it. The waitress told us if we wanted noodles we need to order off "The Noodle Menu". I asked to speak to manager i was told owner was there so i said i would like to speak to the owner she refused to come out and speak with me. This was my third and final time of going there. Eating Chinese Food on the Northern Oregon Coast is very similar to eating at McDonald's. Each one tastes the same and after a while, the lack of flavour and originality grows very old and tiresome. After reading the food critics review in our local paper, we figured we'd give Chen's a chance. (Alllllll we arrrrre saaaaaying, isss give Chen's a chaaaance) Sorry, had a Lennon moment there. This particular critic commented on how Chen's was not the usual Chinese that we get here, so it was worth a shot. First notice was a crowded parking lot on a Thursday night. Howling winds and rain did not keep folks away. Second observation was the amount of Asian folks dining there. I don't think that I can recall ever seeing any Asians (other than employees) eating at any of our local Chinese places, and Chen's had at least 5 tables with them. Not to sound racist, but that is a good sign. Third observation was this really odd dude dining alone and singing (actually quite well) county western songs to himself as he dined. It was a little odd and distracting and got some odd looks from folks, but he seemed really harmless....just in his own universe. As he put on his fourth sweatshirt and gathered his gear, it was hard to tell if he was a drifter, a resident at one of the rehab centres, or just a happy lad, but he paid his bill and moved along. Menu has a nice selection and the opportunity to build your own combos from a selection of the usual suspects. Some of the prices are much higher than other local Chinese places (shrimp fried rice is $10.95 -- many other places it is no more than $8). We got a family combo for two and even though famished upon arrival, had leftovers for lunch the next day. Easily, the best Chinese food that I have had on the North Coast of OR / South Coast of WA. Egg Flower soup was hot, flavourful, and thick. Really good. Appetizers of BBQ Pork (very tender, moist, flavourful.. just perfect. NOT Dried and tough like many places), great egg rolls (crisp, not as fat as some places, but really good), huge plate of fried shrimp. Pork fried rice was flavourful, moist, and really good, Sweet & Sour Chicken was fresh and perfectly done. Special Beef Chow Mein was great as well. Lots of tender beef, veggies and lo mein noodles with awesome flavour. I like soft noodles in chow mein and am not into the types they regularly serve everywhere that are all veggies atop crispy noodles. Amazing service & Some of the best hot tea. Their menu has many options and some unique finds such as their Chinese fruit cups for afters. Great meal at a decent price that will have us make the extra drive to get there. The server was great, and had a great attitude. That being said is the only reason this restaurant earned a star. The food was dryer than the Sahara desert. The general Taos, orange, and sweet and sour chicken were all the same over-breaded chicken (hopefully), with a small amount of measly sauce to compliment it. I like cheesy Chinese-American food, but this place takes out the cheesy part. None of the foods or sauces tasted bottled or canned. I can say that was some of the best sweet-and-sour sauce I have ever had; and the dipping sauce for the BBQ pork was spot-on delicious, along with the pork itself. Everything tasted fresh, and it was served piping hot. And I normally don't like fortune cookies, but these were the bomb. Obviously made fresh and full of flavor. We've driven by Chen's many times when visiting Long Beach and finally decided to give it a try, based upon a recommendation from somebody recently. Now we are kicking ourselves for waiting so long! Our waiter was a very nice young man with a good sense of humor, the restaurant was very clean, and the service was fast. Our food was excellent. I had my standard fried rice and it was good as any I've had anywhere. My wife ordered shrimp special noodle chow mein and said it as the best Chinese food she had in a long, long time. And that's saying a lot, because we eat at Chinese restaurants at least two or three times a month! We will definitely be going back again! read more

It looked like it was made on a George Foreman grill. The sauce tasted like a just-add-water powder mix, and the egg roll had about as much integrity as Ted McGinley's latest Google search. This place came highly recommended to me by a dude I used to work with, although he ended up quitting due to a drug addiction, so there's always that. Let me start by saying this past year we've been here a few times and loved their pot stickers and hot oil, normally get Walnut Prawns and General Taos Chicken. Tonite, however, started with a dirty glass with lipstick on it for my husbands beer. Then we got the pot stickers with the oil. The oil container was nearly empty and when trying to spoon oil to drizzle on pot stickers, kept coming up with black parts of sludge and oil was tasteless, so asked waitress for new fuller container of oil. She came back with a tiny saucer filled with a little oil almost 7-8 min. Later by then pot stickers weren't hot anymore and oil had no flavor. Asked if she would take them off our bill since we only ate one and she said yes. Got our entree's and first bite of walnut prawns was lukewarm to cold. Same with husbands chicken. We looked at each other and said we're done asked to speak to Mgr. No Mgr. there supposedly. So my husband spoke with another waitress other than ours at cash register told her what happened, said we were leaving and asked what if any do we owe. We had left both uneaten entree's at our table, a full bottle of beer and about two sips taken from my plum wine. She rang it up and handed to him, full charge for everything. Including the pot stickers which our waitress said she would take off the bill. Waitress at cash register said she was not allowed to take anything off of bill, even if we didn't eat the food. We were quite incredulous. Husband said we were going to review on Yelp, she said Yelp is a scam. So needless to say, buyer beware. So a day later my husband went into Chen's because he felt strongly about last nite and wanted to talk to owner. Saw one of our fav waitress there who knows us from coming in, long story short, she told owner what happened, he was very upset and extended an invite to come back and order what we did last nite, no charge. Don't think your getting anything near Chinese food. The pork egg fu yung was a pasty (breadcrumb?) filled tough pancake with pieces of pork thrown on top...the instant gravy made it all taste like a horrible frozen dinner. My friend had a dinner special combo. All onions and celery over soggy chow mein crunchies. The sweet and sour pork and shrimp were so heavily breaded that it was hard to identify the tiny bits of pork and shrimp. Unfortunately we threw it out.
