This was my first time ordering from this restaurant, and I was a little disappointed with my meal. I ordered Garlic Ribs for myself and three egg rolls for my spouse. The Garlic Ribs with rice were tasty, but there were more onions and green bell peppers than rib meat. I could count the tiny bite-sized ribs with two hands. My spouse loved the egg rolls and stated, "They are very generous with the plum sauce!" We will probably patronize this restaurant again; however, I think I will try a different dish. Came for dim sum. It was ok. The we ordered the standard fare which included chicken feet, soup dumpling, bean curd, and some others. I was impressed by the quantity. If you take a look at the pictures for $5.25 I would say each of the dishes were worth it. In terms of quality that is just average tasting. Nothing was out of the world better than any other dim sum place. However if you like dim sum this is a place to check out. The one dim sum dish we did not like was the chang fen (beef roll) because literally it did not contain any beef. The employee said it does contain beef but it was so minced that it tasted like the dough itself. They also have an authentic menu that has dishes that we would try such as the casseroles. Looking for Dim sum and according to Yelp, this is one of the best to have dim sum in Metro Detroit. They are pretty good for the most part. Dumpings are full of shrimp and meat. The buns are good, good amount stuffing. 腸粉rice noddle roll has no meat in it, it was all noddle. Anything that has to roll wasnt up to the standard. Overall it is a good place to eat dim sum and Chinese food but be careful what you order. Also it is in Rochester Hill so quite a bit of a drive depends on where you live. read more

Good soups and egg rolls. Usually egg rolls are over cooked thin and soggy. These were still cooked but still were not dried and limp. They did get my order wrong. I ordered chicken egg foo yong. But got shrimp egg foo yong. They charged me for the chicken version when I pointed it out to them and gave us egg custard dessert. That's customer service. :). read more

2nd time to come here after 4-5 years later. Service has improved faster, portions size per order good for 2-3 persons. Tasted the seafood birds nest, shrimp & roasted pork fried rice and the crispy egg noodles with shrimp and roasted pork. Hot tea served free. Our food was not so salty and with lots of fresh vegetables. No music so I could hear myself making a noise while eating :-) lots of take out orders. Casual family style dining. Private parking. For Metro Detroit, the dim sum at Cheng's is a 5/5 because it's hot and fresh. If you want to satisfy your dim sum cravings, this is the right place for it. My family has pretty high standards for dim sum, and this is the only restaurant they'd consider in the area. We got a variety of food, but I'll highlight a few that I enjoyed and remembered after a few days. * 干炒牛河 (BEEF CHOW FUN) - The noodles were the perfect texture of springy and chewy with lots of "wok hay" flavor along with the sauce. The beansprouts and onions were crisp and delicious. I wish they didn't skimp on the beef slices because I could barely find them in there. * STEAMED CHICKEN FEET (5.25) - So good and juicy. The skin and cartilage were both so tender and the sauce was perfect. We got this piping hot. Definitely would recommend. * EGG TART (4.75) - Each order comes with three super flaky and buttery egg tart. It was also very fresh and so good. The perfect end for dim sum. * BEEF BABY RIBS WITH BLACK PEPPER (5.25) - Not a lot of beef but the black pepper sauce is so good. This is a pretty fatty and hearty dish, yum. * STEAMED SPARERIBS WITH BLACK BEAN SAUCE (5.25) - Good but not much meat and too much bones. But still get it because, so good! Next time, I wanna try the sesame balls, steamed BBQ pork buns, pan-fried turnip cake, shrimp in rice roll, steamed bean curd skin, and more. The dim sum here is actually hot and fresh, which cannot be said for most other dim sum places in the area. Was looking for dim sum in Rochester and that search led me to Cheng's. What a great discovery. I wish I would have found thins place years ago. It was amazing. We started with a variety of dumplings. I especially loved the steamed cream bun...it was dessert worthy and the egg yolk bun. The egg yolk was almost custard like in the pillowy, delicious steamed bun. The noodles with soy sauce on the dim sum menu was one of the best noodle dishes I've ever had, For entrees, my wife and I ignored the "American Chinese" Menu and ordered off the authentic menu. No regrets. Wife got the pork, i got the steak and onions. We loved them both. It was my first time and I ended up loving all the dishes - shrimp rice rolls, beef rice rolls, three courses of peking duck, beef chow fun, turnip cakes, egg noodles, bbq pork buns, shrimp siu mai, general tso's chicken, pan fried dumplings, garlic chives pancake, deep fried squid with spicy salt and sweet egg yolk buns! Next time if I go with my husband only then I would most definitely order peking duck! Hands down the best place for dim sum in Metro Detroit. Everything tasted fresh and we were served shortly after placing our order. My favorites were the Rice Rolls, BBQ Pork Buns (so pillowy!) and Egg Noodle with Soy Sauce. The noodles had the right amount of dry-ness and good wok hei. I am all about supporting small businesses, especially Asian ones. Dim sum is not common in MI so I'm grateful for the few options we have. That being said, there are better options in metro Detroit but this place satisfied my dim sum craving. I thought the service was a bit disorganized. The waiters would bring out the dishes and go around every table and look at your marked off menu and see if you ordered what they're carrying out the kitchen - then they'll "circle" that item on your menu so they know it's been served. We ordered combination plates which were disappointing. The sweet and sour chicken had very little chicken in heavily battered balls. There was no pineapple or green peppers. The chicken fried rice had no chicken. The egg rolls were vegetarian and lacked flavor. The garlic chicken had hardly any chicken, maybe 1/4 cup. It had 3 cups of green peppers. There was no garlic flavor. The tea was cold. The service was quick. The ambiance was strip mall chic with some nice Asian accents. I've lived in Michigan for about a year now and if you're familiar with the ecosystem, Chinese food is not a strong suit for Michiganders, at least not on the bottom corner of the palm. Most places I've tried have been just variations of Panda Express, which there is nothing wrong with on most days. The meat dumplings were piping hot and especially crispy, the fried shrimp dumpling, the same! The shrimp rice noodles (cheng fun) were filling and oh that sweet soy sauce. A friend and I arrived shortly after they opened and were attended to right away. It was quiet at first but it eventually got really busy. Where I'm from, a reliable gauge of a restaurant's quality is whether the individuals who are native to the cuisine frequent the establishment. And this was no disappointment! If you're looking for panda express food, there are tons of places (Ping On, 1st Wok etc..), but if you want authentic Cantonese dim sum, look no further! read more

Cheng's is one of the very few Chinese restaurants that are still serving authentic, delicious cuisine in the metro Detroit area. This is one of the few places my parents will ever eat at nowadays when they come back into town because Cheng's quality, freshness of ingredients, and way of cooking is always so good and consistent. I appreciate also that they serve dim sum too! One of, again, the few restaurants still serving dim sum in our area. Right now, Cheng's is still only doing carry-out in the midst of the pandemic, which is fine by me because I often only come here to pick up to-go food. Tons of free parking. Accepts cash and credit card. If you are looking for dim sum, this place seems to be a big hit with locals. All their dishes came out hot. Please note at the time, they didn't bring out carts. But rather they just bring out the dishes as they become ready. Our server was a bit pushy and making us order more food than expected. Not sure why though. The shumai is really good and their shrimp crepes are good too. They also have exotic items such as durian fried rolls which was not too bad. Their chicken feet had good flavor. They do have tons of tables here. Good for large families too. Just be sure to come early to avoid lines. Went to Cheng's last night. First time trying dim sum. When we first got sat, we searched the menu and didn't see dim sum but when I asked the server she quickly dropped off a form to fill of many options to choose from. We loved the idea of having small portions of trying many different things and enjoyed most of it. Our favorite was the steamed bbq pork buns. The only item we wouldn't get again was the steamed cream bun but if you like sweet, it might be for you. Their phone was non stop ringing which was a little distracting but just goes to show how popular they are. They did have a few options that were crossed off but still plenty to choose from. The service was also very good. If you are like us and want to try dim sum I highly recommend it! Also keep in mind, when you choose an order of something just know there will most likely be 3 or 4 per item. We thought it might be one bun or dumpling and may have ordered too much but a good problem to have with leftovers. Definitely will be back! read more

It's been a bit since I reviewed Cheng's, so here is an update. We stopped in for lunch today and this has to be the best Chinese restaurant in the area. We ordered a couple of combinations and some dim sum, too. Everything we ate was very fresh and tasty. We had the bbq chicken steam buns and pan-fried dumplings from the dim sum menu. The menu doesn't state how many come per order, but it is three. Both dim sum were very good. We tried the Almond chicken combo (best I have had) and the Tso's combo, which was nice and spicy. There fried rice isn't great, but I would rather have white rice. My son had a sweet and sour chicken kids meal and loved it. Overall, Cheng's can add up and be a little pricey, but it is very much worth every penny. read more
