She also doesn't appear to practice evidence-based medicine. After her asking me what I eat in a typical day, she asked, "Where do you get your protein?" (Ugh. The idea that protein is hard to come by is flatly wrong and severely outdated. As Dr. Nestle, chair of the NY University nutrition dept. said, *26* years ago "We never talk about protein anymore, because it's absolutely not an issue, even among children. If anything, we talk about the dangers of high-protein diets. Getting enough is simply a matter of getting enough calories." The DV/RDA is ~8% of calories from protein, while grains are ~13% protein, vegetables 23%, etc.) She then tried to tell me that I had to combine plants foods to get a complete protein. (That was an urban legend promoted by a popular 1971 book, whose author recanted ten years later. The USDA nutrient database shows that individual vegetables, grains, and beans have all essential amino acids, in higher amounts than what we need.) Finally, she said I should eat more fat. I asked if there were science to support the idea that an addition of fat to an otherwise healthy diet improves health outcomes. Her reply was like, "I've been a doctor for 20 years...." Meaning, no science. By the way, she asked why I chose her, and I said that one of her patients wrote in a review about how he was able to get off all his meds for Crohn's Disease. Dr. Ikbal replied that the patient took himself off the meds, it wasn't her doing. Anyway, after hearing so much misinformation in just a brief, limited interaction, I have to wonder what other misinformation Dr. Ikbal is operating on. If you want a physician who practices evidence-based medicine, you'll probably want to look elsewhere. UPDATE: After I left the above review, suddenly DOZENS of glowing 5-star reviews appeared within a few days, about 1/3 of which are from people not even in the Austin area, many not even in the same state, and many of whom have zero other reviews on Yelp. Yelp has understandably moved most of these to the "Reviews Not Recommended" section. Is Dr. Ikbal buying fake reviews? Draw your own conclusions.

As others here have noted, one never feels that he's in a rush to wrap up his time with you and move on. He takes time to engage in a conversation with you, to listen to your concerns and questions, and to address them thoroughly. For me, good communication is the most important quality I look for in a primary care doctor, aside from a basic confidence in his/her competence. Dr. Killian has helped me better understand my various medical issues and articulates his treatment goals and methodologies in an exceptionally thorough and understandable manner. I have a fantastic cardiologist who is also an excellent communicator, but I have often found myself with Dr. Killian explaining and helping me understand my heart issues more completely than I would listening to my cardiologist alone. He is thorough in integrating test results and other information from the cardiologist (and other specialists) into my patient records to maintain a complete understanding of all my ongoing medical issues. I could scarcely ask for more than that. His group practice, Red River Family Practice, is well-run, and I have encountered very few of the office/administrative frustrations I have at similar group practice offices. Reading some other less-than-positive reviews here, I'm reminded that no single physician is likely to be the right fit for every patient, each with their unique concerns and expectations. That said, Dr. Killian is a perfect fit for my priorities and expectations, and his competence and professionalism provide a rock-solid foundation to support those preferences. I'm a surgeon myself, so is my husband and I have sent a good number of friends his way. He's a "doctor's doctor." Many of the surgeons I know use him as their personal primary care doctor. He is an intuitive caregiver who anticipates problems and gives concise, thoughtful and very helpful medical guidance. Actually as I'm writing this I'm reminded that a few years ago he made an offhand comment that maybe my husband should have a colonoscopy. Apparently Dr Schneider documented this in his medical record. When we were applying for life insurance and disability, the insurance company required us to get all the testing that had been suggested and was documented in the records. Because my husband is too young to qualify for a colonoscopy based on screening guidelines, we had to pay out-of-pocket to get this test. Fast forward, during the colonoscopy they found a giant polyp which according to the gastroenterologist would've been invasive cancer by the time he was old enough to qualify for screening. No family history, no symptoms, a silent time bomb sitting in his colon. So I guess you could say that Dr. Schneider, in his typical intuitive medical Sherlock Holmes style , preemptively cured my husband of cancer. And there you go, the doctor's doctor.

Since my A1C was in check, she would no longer prescribe the medication that had been keeping it in check. It was not a pleasant experience getting this escalated to Dr. John's attention. When finally that occurred, Dr. John immediately requested a refill for the prescription med, yet made no mention of the NP's error - or that she would be re-trained. Over the years, his office staff deteriorated, particularly his wife - who clearly rules the roost with autocratic rudeness. Completely misdiagnosed me for a skin rash that later turned out to be bacterial. This guy completely jumped to the most common diagnosis without even looking at my rashes first. Just as poor was the fact I knew he was wrong (this spread was more aggressive) and after *I urged him to please look at it* it was clear that he was completely wrong. I then had to urge him to prescribe me medication to preventatively stop the spread which he was hesitant to do and told me to just buy an OTC cream. Two days later I went to Urgent Care because the rash had spread and gotten so much worse. The Nurse Practitioner said that everything this guy did was wrong, that it was clearly not common fungal and anybody that looked at it could see that, and that even the medication he recommended was far too weak to put a dent on the problem. After three days with new medication I was in recovery. I don't care if/how intelligent this guy might be. His apathy and malpractice that day to me while being (thankfully not fully) trusted as a doctor almost caused me severe health problems that needed fixing by someone more competent in Urgent Care -- the last thing I want is for more to experience the same, especially if they don't self-advocate as much as I had to just to recover.
